Cannibal! The Musical Reviews
The drunken commentary track is hilarious, but the movie itself runs out of steam about 40 minutes into it.
I’ve been curious about this project for a while, and I’m glad I finally saw it. A low-budget Troma production, an affectionate homage to Oklahoma, and a story that covers many touch points of the real Alfred Packer’s life. It works pretty well as a musical on its own, and foretells future Trey Parker projects like South Park and Book of Mormon.
I generally truly enjoy Parker & Stones stuff... I'm a person that can generally sit through anything. I even managed to make it through that horrendous Anne Heche remake of Psycho for gods sake, but this movie.... I just couldn't do it.... I even gave it a second chance with alcohol and couldn't do it. Made it maybe 20 minutes in, and just had to stop. I think this is maybe the 2nd or 3rd movie in over 40 years I haven't been able to make it through. Sorry guys... This one fell flat for me.
15 minutes was as far as I could go, bored to death.
More proof that Trey Parker is a genius. He can write songs like no one's business. Great job with all the parts by those he went to school with. How is it that I've never heard of this until 2023, so many years later? Great musicals, and LOVED the cameo by the alien: a trick they continued throughout their caroon hit, Southpark. I've always loved Trey. Now I can love him even more.
Parker & Stone’s pre-‘South Park’ “student film” is unapologetically cheap & silly. What it lacks in technical prowess, it more than makes up for with its enthusiastic charm. Loaded with genuine laughs & goofy songs. #nitrosMovieChallenge
Talk about having a beef with a guy! It just goes to show that Stone and Parker have been serving humanity a raw deal for their whole careers.
Comparing it to other western parodies (1 Million Ways to Die in the West), Cannibal the Musical wins hands down. The music is surprisingly good and, also surprisingly, so catchy that I found myself singing snippets for weeks afterwards. There is such good nature and a kind of innocence in the films of Trey Parker and Matt Stone, that despite the subject matter and gore, it is cheerful and as light-hearted as a movie musical of the golden age of cinema. I just saw it for the first time (2021); I wish I had seen it earlier!
This may not have the best production value (in the early to mid 90s, they made this movie while in college and raised 125K, as students), the story overall is good with many funny moments that had me laughing. I have watched this many times and still enjoy this. A must watch, at least once!
Incredibly low budget and really poor in presentation. Subtle charm and couple of funny lines make it a little better and even the songs arent too bad. But I'm sorry to say Trey Parker's debut film is really mediocre and is only worth watching once if your curious on his early work otherwise its difficult to recommend
This film is Shpadoinkle, long before The Book Of Mormon and a short while before South Park this was Trey Parkers funny musical for grown ups that were not too grown up. I first watched this 16 years ago and I love it more with each view it's cheaply made and all just a bit of fun, enjoy the catchy songs witty banter and a splash of comical gore.
At the end of this, I'm going to use the word "Recommend". Now take that with a grain of salt, because I can't see the world at large finding Cannibal! The Musical very appealing. But I'm a fan, and recently I was surprised to find that basically everyone I know digs it, so maybe it's the right word after all.
quite the impressive feature film debut for south parks trey parker, it made me laugh quite a bit and has quite the clever premise, plus full blown orchestrated/choreorgraphed songs, its way more advanced than most student films, just goes to show how much of a talent trey parker is
31 of 31 #24 CANNIBAL THE MUSICAL Wow....I guess we all have to start somewhere. Trey Parker's very own movie / musical that has small glimpses of what South Park became and even smaller glimpses of The Book Of Mormon as well, you can totally see how all this stuff eventually lead to bigger and more refined things. Alfred Packer played by Trey Parker is the hero for this musical which is like a spoof of Oklahoma, except the songs are not as good and the quality is obviously not as polished.....but again....its worth to see it if you are a South Park fan cause you literally can hear Cartman in some parts of the movie.....and other voices that are now part of the South Park cast. Also...the movie has Asian native Americans....probably the funniest part of the whole movie. Does it make it a horror movie....well....that depends. If you like gore....it has a great opening sequence and there are some scenes where there is glorious horrific gory stuff. If you hate musicals....this movie will terrify the living daylights out of you. Hard to fully recommend this one....if you are a fan of Trey Parker's work...sure....its worth seeing it once, but as a horror movie....well...again...that depends lol. Probably funnier if you are tripping on acid and wasted on moonshine.
You have to have some patience with this one. For awhile it really seems mediocre.. Then you get to the "Indians" and its funny as hell. From there the film gradually gets more brilliant, building up to a side-splitting ending. By the time its over you love the movie, and even in the somewhat boring early stages you have to admire the wit. All in all it's earned its place among the Trey Parker classics of absurd comedy, and as others have pointed out, it does have a pretty cool independent charm/feel. Still not as good as Team America but hey, what is?
A bit too long and slow, but considering its low budget and relatively inexperienced crew of filmmakers, the effort in the movie is tremendous. The musical numbers aren't as memorable as some of the stuff Parker and Stone would come up with later, but it's not terrible. Usually, movies this low budget that try to do musical numbers can be cringeworthy, but the music isn't bad. Again, the movie is a bit too long and it is slow to get going, but the final half hour is pretty enjoyable.
