Carnage Reviews

Apr 6, 2025

You can see truly professional work by the 4 actors. It's good to see when you have a spare time, it's not deep but short and laughable.

As a play I found this piece to be riveting. As a film, even with the talents of Polanski and an all star cast working overtime, it feels like a community theatre production by actors who mistake screaming for intensity and over emoting for dramatic acting. In the end I didn’t feel riveted, I felt exhausted.

Honestly, this one's good. Sometimes we need something like this. It seems to be a simple film with nothing to talk about, but it's very interesting. The actors are sublime and the story's very interesting.

Enjoyed it, very good writing and acting.

The pedigree of this film couldn't be any finer - the director and stars have six Oscars and countless nominations between them. But this is a stagy, unpleasant film adaptation of Yasmina Reza's GOD OF CARNAGE, a play that I'm sure works well on the stage but feels really artificial through the camera lens. These are wonderful actors, but none of them are at peak form here - Foster in particular comes across very shrill and like she's trying way too hard. I've seen many brilliant stage to screen transfers but, sadly, this isn't one of them.

I am a sucker for a great screenplay, and this adaptation of Yasmina Reza's play "God of Carnage" is simultaneously hilarious, engaging, and controversial. Some people will undoubtedly be put-off by the main body of the film taking place in a single room, but with this incredibly talented cast and the riveting screenplay, the claustrophobic space only intensifies a meeting between two couples from polite conversation to the ensuing carnage.

Me encanta cuando puedes sentirte en la habitación

Watching these couples devolve into drunken jerks is wonderful to behold. The acting was perfect. And I loved the ending as the credits rolled.

A fun exercise from Roman Polanski. Is 'Carnage' a drama or a comedy? Hard to tell but it is certainly hard to turn away from.

What a great psychological thriller/comedy this is, but ends up with the two kids back playing with each other - showing that kids are so innocent that they can get along with each other but the parents cannot!!!!

Films about groups of people trapped in an enclosed space with increasing tension and emotional strain are one of my many weaknesses, alongside the smell of old paper, the sound of rain on the roof, and most commercially available bullet calibers. Despite some clear shortcomings (the theatrical origins of the source material, Yasmina Reza's 2008 play, show relatively prominently), a very solid core cast gives this adaptation some interesting entertainment value. However, even at 80 minutes, the narrative is surprisingly reiterative. Between four characters trapped (via social convention and eventually spite) in a single location, we should have been able to get some more depth to this group, but what details we ultimately receive all largely seem to support the same conclusion - that everybody is hiding an angrier, more selfish, and less empathetic side behind a mask of politeness. In principle, it's a realistic sentiment, but it's laid out without much in the way of nuance, and despite several shouting matches never reaches the emotional heights that you might expect. That's not to say that the film is without merit (far from it), but it's difficult to say whether the film's restraint was a deliberate choice by Reza to preserve some sense of realism, or a lack of imagination on the part of the team adaptating the film. I personally wouldn't mind if we got Waltz throwing things in a fit of rage. I like to think that this is actually purgatory for these four, doomed to perpetually devolving arguments as everyone becomes ever more exasperated. At the very least, the hamster would definitely be dead out in the real world. (2.5/5)

It's bland if your hoping for a laugh you'll be sorely disappointed.

Polanski's smooth direction and tremendous performance from Winslet and Foster make this film soar. The descent of four adults to a thuggish level makes it interesting to speculate on what Hitchcock might have made of Reza's oeuvre.

Beatiful comedy, with a freat script as always Polanski does.

Carnage isn't a bad movie by any means, but it's not on par with many of director Roman Polanski's better films. It's immediately evident that the movie is based on a play as there is only one real set (a New York apartment) and four characters (played by Jodie Foster, John C Reilly, Kate Winslet and Christoph Waltz). The promising premise involves a schoolyard incident that results in two sets of parents meeting to discuss the matter. What starts as an interesting exchange of ideas of how to resolve the issue degenerates into an ugly debate involving philosophy, morality, parenting, and marriage issues. Winslet and Waltz hold their own but Foster and Reilly ham it up beyond belief. While the movie is undeniably interesting, it begs a simple question: do people in the real world actually talk and behave like this?

Total Waste of Time and Talented Actors.

Taking the positives, it deserves to be highlighted how talented were the performance by the four main characters. Awesome. The plot's development was really good. It truly unfolds how visceral and impulsive beast we could be. It represents our inner and primitive desire to surpass our enemies at the same time that this one is fenced by moral and principleswhich sometimes takes our personal meaning which does not have to be shared by others. Turning the case on negatives points, I only will remark second time the parent come back at others parent home, does not look credible or realistic what provokes to lose the plot for a few minutes to me.
