Carrie Reviews
Carrie is an absolute bland remake. Very little fire in this film but rather an excuse to boost Chloe Grace Moretz’s career as a rising young actress. There are many things that are missed in attempting to recreate what made the original so thrilling, shocking, and terrifying, especially considering Sissy Spacek’s unforgettable performance in the original. There was no attempt to bring something fresh to a classic. Grading: D+
I love Julianne Moore, but this was awful.
Chloe's perfomance was mindblowing especially the prom scene and also the perfomance of Juliana was incredible bgm, cinematography was also good
As a fan of the book and the original 1976 film my expectations for this were mixed. But just yesterday I saw this with two friends and loved every minute of it. It is very faithful to the original source material with a few modern takes on the story. There was also a bit more blood . Chloe grace moretz is not my first choice to play carrie but from what I saw she did very well.
It wasn’t the worst movie I’ve ever seen but it was pretty boring im not going to lie. I almost turned it off it’s a slow burn which isn’t always a good thing.
It's fundamentally ok but it does NOTHING better than the original. The direction is just alright but compared to De Palmas direction it's not even close. Everything here is basic. The editing between telekenesis outbursts is alright but isn't as sharp as the 76' one. The biggest problem here is Moretz as Carrie. I don't believe for a second watching her she would be a social outkast. It's like watching someone who is trying to be a awkward introvert after reading about it and studying but never actually feeling like it in real life. Or like watching a popular girl trying to act like a unpopular one. Outside of that she's alright but man it would've been an almost impossible task for anyone to come close to Sissy because the casting is just perfect. Moore is the one good thing in this and unfortunately she doesn't get a lot of time. I wish this would've explored the mother daughter relationship a bit more because of how good she is instead of copying the original by following the same beats. The CGI special effects are NO WHERE near as good as the practical effects/tricks used in the first either. This feels like it focuses more on Chris who isn't as interesting as Carrie or the Mom. The whole issue really can be summed up comparing the prom blood scene where it turns into a horror film in both versions. Comparing DePalma's 15 minutes of no dialouge at all buildup and turn to how this one does it shows all the issues. Basic direction, CGI effects that take you out of the expierence, Moretz feeling miscast, and the editing isn't as sharp. The end scare change is a bit lame too. Skip This. By no means is this broken or the worst remake ever. It just has no right to exist. Stick with the 76' Classic.
My favorite version of Carrie.
I remember that the original didn't thrill me so much... But this remake is pretty bad
Despite the metaphor of the original being different from the remake and the latter having continuation errors, I thought the film was cool. The original talks about the power of the female sex, sex itself and religion. The new one, I think it talks more about bullying and its consequences. And in this new version of Carrie, we have a super blessed mother who doesn't teach her anything other than religion, so Carrie becomes an introverted and isolated girl from the class, which makes her a laughing stock and doing these things with people with powers of telekinesis, can turn out to be really dangerous, not because they are bad but because they are misunderstood. Actress Chloë Grace Moretz is impeccable in her protagonist role (although she doesn't think her face is ideal, as she is beautiful, but she showed that she has talent), Julianne Moore is also not far behind in the role of the extremely religious mother and the others, they are mere supporting characters to die at the hands of Carrie, the stranger.
The remake is quite watchable. Good technique. The acting of some actors is not good. but still worth watching. In addition, there are creative details about very modern social networks
The movie was good, I have just finished it today.
Loved it it was better than reviews
This movie was really good. I know it's a remake but it's a really good one. The music, scenes, acting, all good! I definitely recommend for you to watch it!.
Pointless remake that offered no new perspectives or details about the original story.
There is nothing about Moretz (performance wise or visual appearance) that manages to even slightly suggest a girl who'd be a social outcast. Also, for a remake that was made nearly 40 years later, the special effects don't even come close to replicating or enhancing the memorable imagery (or horror) of the original Brian De Palma version.
Enjoyable. The story was well modernized to keep up with the times but is far from perfect. Worth watching for any fan of Carrie.
This modern take on Carrie was so well done. The effects were put together very well and looked great with some exceptions. The way they brought the modern style and themes into this adaptation worked very well, and the slight tweaks to the story to make it more modern, made this a better film than the rest. Chloe Grace Moretz does a great and compelling performance along with Julianne Moore. They play off of each other so well as the twisted mother - daughter relationship and it works perfectly. This adaptation deserves the good ranking it gets for being a more modern take that is put together well and works.
Actually one of the better remakes after 10 years! The story is the same still based on the novel by Stephen King with some more instances incorporated Carrie White is a social outcast; the opening has her mother, Margaret give birth to her pretty much setting the tone and her mindset being a crazy religious fanatic Carrie ends up getting so much emotional abuse from her even when she wants to be in the modern world, it’s bad enough she gets picked on at school from the other girls Then she discovers she has telekinetic powers of all things She sees this as a blessing while her mother sees it as an abomination The fact that Carrie hasn’t been taught to be social or learn the natural cycle of being a woman makes her very shy and timid But these powers could help get her out of her shell as they begin to elevate Things start to change when Carrie is invited to prom by one of the boys who’s friends with one of the girls who picked on her and later felt bad about it Of course not everyone is pleased getting in trouble and being punished by the coach so they plan to ruin the night The cast comprises of Chloe Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Judy Greer, Portia Doubleday, and Gabrielle Wilde Brian de Palma’s original will stand the test of time and cementing Sissy Spacek’s career delivering a cult horror classic A lot of things are better here from the gore to the telekinesis powers to Marco Beltrami’s score There’s also a theme of blood present throughout with a starker depiction of humiliation as well as slut shaming Moretz is actually pretty good and I love Moore’s take on the mother role Director Kimberly Pierce inserts more of a commentary in here on the state of bullying in todays modern age of social media mainly around YouTube The current events of teens bullying others online is ever present here showing how far Carrie can be pushed to totally lose control Once you’re seen by everyone it changes everything, people not supporting you makes you angry and reactive, we can all relate coming into teenage tyranny on the cusp of adulthood, you can only push someone so far before they snap and unleash their rage Lots of feminism is sprinkled in here showing the main character caring about someone not strictly a man when given a chance to be known and heard Even a poem about Samson reflects what happens to Carrie I won’t lie the movie is far too short and Portia Doubleday is terrible with her line readings Yet Moretz and Moore sell their performances testing their mother-daughter relationship, Margaret believes she’s protecting Carrie from the world yet we see her as mentally unstable A product of generational abuse and mental instability is present thanks to Moore’s portrayal with a level of discomfort A majority of the plot holes and inconsistencies are fixed too This remake is pretty much the same film but goes a few steps further than the original; today’s generation is easy to dismiss a movie that’s over 40 years old and most remakes get a bad reputation for not living up to what was done before Here is a movie that’s actually a good exception for a change
Our main actress was incredible. I enjoyed this remake.
It's competently made, the acting is fine, it had some good ideas regarding bringing Stephen King's iconic stories to the 21st century and the climax is just as cathartic as in the 1976 film, albeit a bit too much like what a horror movie directed by Roland Emmerich would look like. However, while by no means a dumpster fire, the 2013 version of Carrie suffers from one very glaring flaw: it's faithful to the Brian de Palma film to a fault. There's effort put into it to prevent it from coming off as a full-blown shot-for-shot remake and I think you'll find this movie fine if you saw this before the '76 version but it's pretty obvious from the way it's structured that "the book came first" is not a valid counterargument here unlike, say, the "Manhunter vs. Red Dragon" debate. It really doesn't help that the director initially intended this film to be a more faithful adaptation of the book only for MGM & Screen Gems to INSIST that it be more like the '76 film but with more technology. I know Stephen King preferred the film to his own source material but it would still be interesting to see a different interpretation than the one that remains prominent in the pop culture consciousness. Try as it might, the 2013 adaptation of Carrie unfortunately remains stuck in the shadow of what I consider to be one of the best Stephen King films to date, first installment wins indeed.
