Casualties of War Reviews
It’s one of those movies that creates puts your stomach and keeps putting it. Then when you learn it is based on a documented true story, your heart is completely ripped out. It is a solid war movie, but a great movie about depravity and heroics. The cast is excellent and Depalma did a masterful Job with direction. Everything in the music is amazing. Truly underrated film as it’s more of an experience.
This film has some deleted scenes that honestly should've been here but man, this film is so underrated. A very powerful & intense drama that really sticks with you. It's such a shame that no one talks about it. Fantastic cast and a great musical score by Ennio Morricone. Definitely one of those movies you only watch once.
In the midst of conflict, everyone is capable of committing the most depraved actions! During the Vietnam War, a young cadet is assigned to a group of soldiers who kidnap an innocent Vietnamese girl for sick pleasure, so he attempts to court-martial the rapists without getting killed himself. Based on a true event that happened during one of America's bloodiest battles, we are forced to confront the fact of what we would during those circumstances!
This war movie was great. Michael J. Fox, Sean Penn, Don Harvey, John C. Reilly, John Leguizamo, Ving Rhames, and the rest of the cast did a great job in this movie. The plot of the movie was dramatic, dark, and shocking. It's about witnessing a war crime and doing anything you can to make sure the men responsible suffer the consequences. If you haven't seen this movie yet, check it out sometime. It may be scary to watch at times, but it still turns out good in the end.
Don't get me totally wrong as there is a tiny bit of good in this film Casualties of War that I finally watched again just now and for just my 2nd and very last time ever. Mike J Fox was excellent! Story was ok. Direction was just ok. Sean Penn was weak and non convincing. And add to that on John C Reilly's performance and who is the absolute worst actor on the planet! I mean Pauly Shore and Cocaine Bear could have been more convincing! My rating cannot be better than 4.5 out of 10! I had better hopes too for this going in and it was all Michael J Fox or this would have easily landed a 2 out of 10 score!
Surprisingly J.Fox worked here. A rare watchable war film.
[4/5/21]: This was good man, heartwrenching. Some parts were clunky or on the nose (the newbie getting blown up) though. Cam from POV multiple times, with kidnapping and Meserve coming up to Eriksson after). The best scene was the black dude explaining to MJ Fox that the system is too strong. That's the way things are. Best shot was the rain coming down after the assault talks place. De Palma really went in with telling a brutal story about war. Here, I think all the violence depicted is warranted. We need to be repulsed with that imagery in order for his point to be made with the greatest effect.
What a great movie this was that is incredibly hard to watch. It's also very frustrating, because of how the Army handles the tragic incident. It's a heartbreaking film, directed wonderfully by De Palma, with an at times haunting score by the legend Ennio Morricone. The acting is solid all around. Fox probably gives a career performance, and Sean Penn plays a character only Sean Penn can. It's hard to put into words how this film made me feel, really good film with a very difficult subject matter.
The plot is underdeveloped in the final quarter of the movie. The end seemed hurried. Otherwise, this is a great movie.
Just another Vietnam movie. But Sean Penn plays the psycho soldier to the the tee, and the movie is entertaining enough.
The way Brian tried to pull this doesn't seem authentic, but it sure is great and somewhat memorable in its ways.
This movie shows the morality of some people during the Vietnam war, as well as the horrible mistreatment of the citizens of Vietnam
In the snowy winter of 1990 I cycled into my local town to rent out Casualties of War. I took an incredible risk that evening as 6 months earlier I was in a car wreck and spent 2 months in hospital. Anyhow, for what little back story is worth, the film had an incredible impact on me after watching. For the next few years I would occasionally ask different folks why we had such wars. I was very intrigued. The film truly does sent a powerful message of the horrors of such conflicts. Penn and Fox are great actors and I also liked John C Reilly's performance. The ending might not be to everybodys taste but overall an unforgettable film. 10 out of 10 for me.
Not a fan of war movies but Michael J. Fox was great in this movie. The movie itself is based on a terrible true story. Very well done and very moving. I am so sorry the girl died, however; the rapists got what they deserved.
De Palma's harrowing tale of rape & murder of a young Vietnamese girl at the hands of a group of US soldiers during the Vietnam War. Highly recommended.
The events portrayed in this movie strike a grim and deep emotional chord. I'm impressed by the performances of the all star cast before some of them became the huge Hollywood stars that they became. Sean Penn puts in an especially believable performance as the jerk rapist sergeant. John Leguizamo and John C. Reilly did a very good job. Michael J. Fox put in a "good" performance, but I am not quite sure this movie couldn't have been a level above with an even better performer. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of MJF in the right roles, but I felt that his style here made him seem like a lightweight in this role. The moral conviction of the character Michael plays I appreciate very much, but Michael didn't seem like the right man for the job. He left something more to be desired. I didn't feel this way about any of the other performances in the movie. There was a moment when Michael screamed "NO" very dramatically and I could not discern the sound of it from when he yelled the same exact thing in Back to the Future when he thought Dr. Brown got shot. For real. There's a chance that I'll watch this movie again, but because it's so disturbing and grim, it will probably be a good long while. It was otherwise very worth watching though.
it was good stylish and touching
It just about sums up the moronic US army's stance on morality. No wonder they don't win wars. Idiots.
it was a little melodramatic but i thought this was a great war movie
