Cemetery of Splendor Reviews

Nov 24, 2021

The dreamlike atmosphere created by Weerasethakul's masterful hand is overshadowed by the cryptic development of a story which treasures lie under its hipnotizing looks. It is, indeed, a rewardingly original film, but it is not, unfortunately, an instantly attention catcher.

get emotions out of you, mixing with some uncomfortable feelings with some joyful, fun emotions at the same time

I've seen four of Apichatpong Weerasethakul's films and they all seem so interesting. They are unique but sadly you must be in the correct state of mind to enjoy them. It's not easy to hit the right moments, and I missed it. Again. Some soliders got some sort of sleeping illness as they lay around in an hospital. The people caring for them are the ones we get to know here. They are talking and even if they have some interesting features they fail to show them of too often. It got light moments, some OK moments too. A guy takes a dump in the woods. I liked that part. I also enjoyd the DJ Soulscape track during the final scenes. The film give me few scenes to interest me. The story is so vaguely told and it's very, very, slow. I do enjoy the images - many great stills could be taken out of this film, but that's about the few positive things for me here. It's a very open and silent film. Gentle and pretty. I fail to get what the director wants me to get - if there is anything to catch. The human warmth and soul stays strong here, as do the simplicity, but it's simply not enough. 4 out of 10 gigantic color shifting straws.

Esta caminata por el onírico mundo de Weerasethakul resulta esplendorosa, la comprensión de la naturaleza humana es grandiosa y a su vez graciosa.

Anyone with the latest iPhone can go to a construction site to record some heavy machinery digging a hole... In fact there were moments I was in a deeper slumber than the comatosed soldiers!!

A truly meditative experience sure to leave you helplessly vulnerable into succumbing to eternal slumber as the soldiers in this film. That's a blessing and a curse for Cemetery of Splendor. But visually, this is a work of art. The colors light up the screen majestically. Everyone and everything in this film seems to be shifting in and out of a deep sleep. This is cinema in a catatonic state.

Cemetery of Splendor, the latest quietly mesmerizing spectacle from Apichatpong Weerasethakul, has an elegant vagueness to its meaning, yet it's rewards are rich.

Too whimsical... not really worth the time to watch...

From my viewpoint, and with great sadness, this clever idea never quite came to fruition. Maybe after having recently watched Uncle Boonmee, my expectations were raised too high. Maybe the film simply didn't resonate with me as much, it happens to the best of us. Worthy effort but not one I will be revisiting anytime soon.

Apichatpong Weerasethakul's latest is a deliberate and occasionally haunting film about the interconnectivity of dreaming and waking life, even if the picture's overall message can be distressingly murky. Shot in a quiet style that's reminiscent of Tarkovsky, Cemetary of Splendor asks viewers to come in with no expectations and be carried away by its mood and imagery. In that regard, the film is highly successful , and it has a subtle rhythm to it that delivers some deeply transgressive sequences. Weerasehakul, however, doesn't quite communicate in the universal way he strives for, which may be because of the cultural divide more than anything. It also ends on a note that's less than revelatory. Still, it's a towering example of film-as-meditation and some will find its abstractions to be pure bliss.

Probably won't work for a lot of American audiences who are used to the CSI-style wrap-up where an hour later, life is wonderful and all questions are answered. Haunting and poetic and stunning. Villenueve and Lynch and Fellini rolled into one. An amazing piece of art.

Strange film not without charm. The film displays the strangeness of the human animal. It tends to think things as immuable, immortal. It built here a palace that a flood took away. Some souls can feel the past objects, some souls have never left this place. Strange animals inhabit this place.

A good film that shows a different way of seeing the life.

this is the most bizarre film that i see in 2016, but still interesting. Sort of. Some may hate it, though.

Might be a cultural clash. OR NOT.

A gorgeous looking film but it didn't click with me. May be one of those movies you need to watch numerous times.

"Cemetery of Splendor" wants you to believe that it's something abstract and profound. Perhaps it is. However, I believe it's a lot of nonsense. Weerasethakul has, once again, presented us a canvas covered with paint splotches and asked us to figure out the meaning. If you're anything like Tong, you might find one.

Another gem from Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Watching the director's films is akin to reaching deep into his primal desires and instincts. Filled with metaphors, spirits and mythical allusions, Cemetery of Splendour playfully traverses the fine line between reality and illusion, the conscious and subconscious, offering a lyrical and darkly humorous paean to dreams, spirituality and desires. Those looking for utterly original cinema that defies cinematic conventions will lap this up.

As slow and loose as this may be, there is an undeniable appeal to its different long shots, even when they evoke way more than what they show. Thailand's mythical culture is evidently the film's centerpiece but I wish AW had more to say about his female protagonists.
