Chaos Reviews

May 4, 2019

An above average revenge movie, which curiously mixes French farce with drama about the white slave trade, has a terrible soggy middle act all told in flashback, a style which must have seemed very contemporary at the time (handheld DV cam) and lends itself pretty well at the beginning to the 'chaos' the film is trying to evoke, but far outstays its welcome in regards to running time.

Amazing comedic timing and plot divided to focus the viewers attention to the modern woman's struggles in a patriarchal world.

It aspires to be an admirable feminist revenge film, but it is terribly acted and scripted, not to mention the ugly DV camerawork.

Gripping drama about a French couple and the French-Algerian prostitute they encounter in a dark alley. "Satirical comedy?" I disagree with that description--there are certain moments that are humorous, but more in a cathartic/ironic sense.

It's hilarious! Don't worry, women does not take revenge like this all the time. Just sometimes. :P

The men, filled with brutality and neglect, make for rather obvious targets, yet we come to care about the women in their lives beyond any agenda Chaos might have.Despite some odd pacing and a longish, off-putting flashback, Chaos succeeds more than it fails.

What a strange film, so full of surprises: strangely shot on hand-held camera with a simplistic, repetitive soundtrack, a plot that violently changes course and a mood that jerkily vacillates between slapstick humour and deep, dark explorations of brutality, cynicism and misogyny. Mostly well acted (particularly by Brakni), assuming at times there was quite deliberate over-acting by most of the cast. Very engaging and recommended to anyone unless you only like action movies awash with superficiality.

This was a surprisingly good tale about a young North African woman who gets trafficked into slavery by her family and eventually & makes her escape after getting run over by a Parisian couple . . .

Not an easy film to watch.

One of the most intelligent and disturbing movie I've seen recently. A MUST se.

This jacket of the DVD would not convey how fantastic this story is. I recommend this film very much. By the director, Coline Serreau, who also made Saint-Jacques... La Mecque (2005), I come to love French films. :) In the beginning of the film we see one Chinese calligraphic work hanging upside down on the wall in the husband's study of the bourgeois couple. The letter (福) means "a good fortune." Asian people will avoid hanging it upside down because the deed could invite troubles rather than a good fortune. The joke by the director who hang it intentionally imply how the story will be continued. I found it interesting, too.

A fabulous little French thriller/comedy about a prostitute who attempts to gain her freedom with the help of a woman who has nothing better to do as her horribly self-centered son and husband want nothing to do with her. Sounds dark, but the film is successful in bringing out the comedy within each situation and we get a satisfying ending to an enjoyable, well-acted movie.

A great movie about 2 women from different worlds overcoming their systemic subjugation. Snappy pace, plots twists, intrigue and engaging characters, the movie only really suffers form an extended expository voice-over section that's overly long. And even that part has quite a bit of action in it so it's never boring. Rent it!

Magnifique. I was surprised at the production of the film, but ultimately, I didn't mind the different film experience. The story, too, surprised me with twists and unexpected character motives, but I think that added to what Coline Serreau wanted to get across with the film. It's heavy, but worth it.

Saw it for a French class my freshman year of college. Very violent. It's a gut-wrenching depiction of the selfish men, the better ones who use Helene as a live-in maid, and the worse ones who act as pimps, beating and imprisoning Malika. It shows the slavery in which prostitutes are forced to live. This film beautifully depicts a friendship that ignites between two strong women.
