Chicken With Plums Reviews
Has that larger-than-life Technicolor feel to it.

The limitless resources of the seventh art end up playing in favor of making the production a better embodiment of the story than we could find in its original vehicle. [Full Review in Spanish]

It's undeniably beautiful, but it also feels awfully familiar, with the lighthearted mix of comedy and melancholy veering closer to Jeunet's territory than Satrapri's singular wit.

As sumptuously gratifying as their film is, there's a definite inadequacy in its naïve considerations of love and commitment that casts a hollow pallor over the proceedings. But that's not to say you won't be enchanted by the tragic melancholy.

Chicken with Plums takes the audience into a magical and wonderful space. It provokes a lot of laughs, but was also the only time I saw audience members crying openly and unashamedly.
| Original Score: 4/5 | May 30, 2019
Satrapi and Paronnaud have developed a signature style - bittersweet in tone and episodic in function, beginning and ending some scenes as though they were ellipses with a slow fade in or out to black.

Satrapi is one of the best-known expatriates, thanks to her graphic novels. But she's given us the least insight into a country that remains in the headlines, and will likely continue to do so.

This is an interesting voyage to live in a time and a place.

A beautiful bummer, a deeply-felt and sumptuous movie...
| Jul 3, 2018
It's not necessary to pick up on all the breadcrumbs Satrapi plants here from her previous tale to enjoy this dreamy film.

As whimsical a film about a suicidal old man as you'll find.
| Original Score: 6.5/10 | Aug 17, 2014
Suffused with longing and whimsy, Chicken with Plum's tone can get a little stretched; it can be a touch twee, even cautious. But mostly this adaptation retains a sad dreaminess and a melancholy comic-ness without ever getting cartoonish.

These moments give flavor, but fail to cohere into any particular taste.

unfurls in a dazzling set of sequences and montages that demonstrates everything shown to us - like marriage and society itself - may not be as it seems, or what it should have been.
| Original Score: 5/5 | Apr 21, 2013
While visually scrumptious, the movie struggles to reach a greater profundity that it never quite obtains, but its childlike emulation of a grand tragedy is indelibly precious.
| Original Score: B+ | Apr 14, 2013
On a scene-by-scene basis, much of Chicken With Plums delivers satisfactorily, but it adds up to much less than the sum of its many parts.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Apr 14, 2013
There are pleasures to be found in Chicken with Plums to be certain, but we'd hope for something a little more satisfying next time out from the directing team.

...an admirable trip down the rabbit hole of a lonely man's mind and inspiration, but it loses its way about halfway through the movie and feels like a series of inspired, lovely short films, held together by the barest of threads.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Mar 11, 2013
... uneven blend of whimsy and surrealism that's visually compelling but narratively flat.
