Children of Paradise Reviews

While the acting is good the movie basically three plus hours of dialogue about nothing. Not my cup of tea.

Not just a must see, but a must for repeat viewing. Every storyteller ought to study this cinematic masterpiece.

watched it given metacritics high rating. found the trailer interesting, where they marketed it as "france's response to "gone with the wind". I did find Arletty a good actress. but admittedly fell asleep during parts 1 and 2.

A regular feature on lists of greatest foreign films, I had to watch this at some point. It's a long yarn but it never feels too overbearing. Very Dickensian in creating colourful and fairly one dimensional characters. They philosophise over love with an originality of prose that only the French romantics seem to be capable of bringing to the subject. Not so much a love triangle as a love hexagon, it's an enjoyable watch if not necessarily something I'll need to repeat watch.

After watching this overly long and tedious movie I absolutely hated it! There are simply far too many issue I have with the overall storyline that promotes and tries to justify infidelity, Promiscuity and everything thats Soulless and wrong. For one the actress this film revolves around was anything but pretty I found her appearance aged and very unattractive . For that point in itself I found it unrealistic and not at all believable how or why 4 men would be pining over her to begin with. Then we have the 2nd Protagonist " The Mime" Where some forms of Art are beautiful and inspiring. Miming in my opinion even at its best is outright creepy. Unless it's Charlie Chaplains work ;mimes or clowns freak me out! All weirdness aside we also had the Sociopaths who love to smile after committing cold blooded murder. Their bizarre cartoon like hairstyles and costumes only added to their freakiness. The only kind and semi normal character was Nathalie who just got taken advantage of and mistreated. What a despicable motion picture ! Excuse me while I sit this one out and dispose of it on a nice Bonfire one Cool evening. All the drinks in the World could not make this movie look pretty.

Marcel Carne's sprawling Children of Paradise is a film that exudes energy. The energy can be felt in the boisterous, celebratory street scenes on the Boulevard of Crime. It can be felt in the intimate scenes involving love, love denied, and unrequited love. And the energy can be felt in Carne's filmmaking, filled with expansive establishing shots, great performances, and engaging characters. The only possible downside would be the excessive length of the film, running over three hours. Is the lengthy mime performance in the theatre really necessary, or the theatre rehearsal at the start of The Man in White? Regardless, it's a movie that needs to be seen at least once.

Weaves together a peculiarly French blend of love for the theatre and tragic, unfulfilled romance with distinctive personalities and ambitions that feels somewhat juvenile rather than classic 75 years on. I'm sure that the narrative resonates with those that see early cinema as an escape to what they perceive as a simpler time, but in comparison to the bleak takes on matrimony that have been commonplace since the New Wave, passionate actors dabbling in dangerous, volatile relationships and holding remote emotional affairs without fulfilment for years seems like wishful thinking. The film compensates with uniformly engaging characters, strong performances (particularly Brasseur), and a cluttered, bustling atmosphere anchored by excellent theatre and street scenes, but watching the film without diving into account the decades that it has spent as a universally beloved classic of world cinema, I think nostalgia has clouded the critics' judgement to a degree. (3.5/5)

There is no doubt that this is one of the greatest films of all time, and I am not exaggerating. A wonderful rebuke to the type of movies currently being made, all lovers of film should see it at least once in their lifetimes.

"The Gone With the Wind" of France resembles the American masterpiece in length and the messy love affairs, but the comparisons end there. It is not as epic in scope as GWTW, but it was amazing it got made at all--a grand film produced under the nose of the Nazi occupiers. The opening shot is amazing, and Jean-Louis Barrault is perfect as the mime, Baptiste. It is a bit melodramatic, but it incredibly transports you to the 1820s French theater scene, with all its flamboyant personae.

1001 movies to see before you die. Arguably the best French movie ever made, an epic drama made during a crazy time.

One of the true treasures of the world cinematic -and artistic- heritage. I haven't got anything else to say, Carné's miraculous film says it all.

Shakespearean in nature, and self-identifies as such

Oh wow, I love the classical Walts music at the beginning. Incredible set design. It might not even be a set, I think it might be the actual French city or town. Either way it looks spectacular, and the time period looks interesting. It seems like that whole street is a circus show with all kinds of performances and activities. This Frederick seems to be somewhat of a sweet-talking playboy. Pierre-Francois seems to be an interesting character - playing sort of a sharp-tongued and even sharper minded criminal type. The actor who plays the mime is fantastic. The world is brimming with life and energy. I love it! All the circus performers and acrobats are all fascinating to watch in the background. This Frederick seems to be very overly sure of himself. Maybe too full of himself even. The mime, Baptiste, is very humble and thoughtful. The complete opposite of his acting partner, Frederick. And Garance seems to just wander about doing whatever she wants without a care in the world. I do admire her independence and strong-willed characteristics. She can defend herself it seems like, she's sharp-witted and she is quite lovely. I love how Baptiste befriends the poor blind man on the street who later reveals to him that he can actually see. Jesus Christ, Avril threw Baptiste straight through the glass window without even hesitating! What was even better was how Baptiste came back into the bar fully unscathed and unfazed as if nothing happened and then proceeds to drop kick Avril right in the chest afterwards lol. Wow, Baptiste really is a boy lol. He could have slept and spent the night with Garance but instead left her in her room lol. I guess he wants to show her that he loves her instead of lust her. How clever how the stage play is basically a reflection of the performers real lives. Baptiste tries to show Garance that he loves her but she doesn't respond, whereas Frederick lulls her with his sounds and she responds positively with a smile. That was very interesting to watch how a sliver of real life slipped its way into the play. I loved seeing how each characters lives changed after just a couple of years - and also how they haven't changed as well. Frederick ended up becoming basically a comedian actor and probably the funniest character in the movie. I love that scene where he asks Baptiste's son what his name was and responds in a very funny way. I can't help but feel kind of bad for Garance. It seems a part of herself died off. The complicated love relationship between Garance and Baptiste was so tragic, especially watching that ending. I like to think that Garance will never come back to Paris, knowing how much pain she causes Baptiste and also to herself. It's a love that can't exist and it's the most tragic and safest of circumstances. Time. Time went on as well as their lives, but their love for one another remained. Their lives changed and now it's too late to make things work since Baptiste now has a son and Nathalie will do anything to be by his side - it's almost fate, destined for him to be with Nathalie and not Garance, even though their love for one another transcends space and time. This is why it's tragic. Very clever and smart writing and dialogue. Witty even. And very funny at times! It's no doubt a love letter to the stage and the performers that inhabit it. I love how the world Carne created is so full of life, hope and lively characters. The best part about this movie is how it follows not only one or two characters' stories, but several and it shows how they're all intertwined. It proves how phenomenal the writing is and how brilliantly thought out it was. The performances from all the actors was sublime and even intoxicating to watch. I think one of the biggest themes is modesty vs. excessive pride, how love doesn't always have to involve words and loneliness. It's a very lovely and beautifully poetic movie and also a long one clocking in at 3 hours. But you know what, although really long, every minute was splendid to watch - it didn't feel tedious nor did it drag - it went by pretty damn quick. I would go as far to say that it's a masterpiece of cinema. It's terrific! Sublime visual poetry about the complexities and complications that come with tragic love. I don't think its a movie I'd pay $20 to own on Criterion blu ray, but I'd definitely download it so I can rewatch it whenever.

Impeccable acting and quite a superb theatrical visionary made during the WW2. A love story with lots of back and forth, naturally wounding the pure essence. Considering this lengthy feature, it really don't slumber down the quality. Baptiste Baptiste, master of mime.

A masterpiece! so well written , acted and directed, i'm not sure even today we would know how to do something as fresh, modern, poetic and well said as this film has been able to. Dialogues written by Prevert are a must, they are a delight of poise and wittiness and give this whole film a great authenticity and intelligence. Exceptional in every ways.

Exceptionally poetic

"Few films are as grandly romantic as Marcel Carné's 1945 picture, a rich melodrama released at the height of French cinema's Golden Age. Filming under unimaginable conditions during the German Occupation, Carné, that unrivaled practitioner of Poetic Realsim, circumvented Nazi restrictions and industry shortages to miraculously complete a three-hour epic of lavish design, then the most expensive project in the history of the French film industry."

Considered an "epic" French Film. From the acting, to the sets, this film can ride with any film that is considered an "epic." One will enjoy the film as entertainment, and one with hidden motifs throughout. The only issue one may run into is the film is 3 hours long with an intermission. It was not unusual for big epic films to have long showing times (ben-hur, etc). However, in this age where attention spans are short, it may take a few viewings to get through.
