Child's Pose Reviews

Nov 16, 2023

I don't know why all the movie sites as a synopsis have 'hit-and-run' conviction. It wasn't hit and run, just for the record! However, the mother is absolute hit here, as a manipulative character in a brilliant performance by Luminita Gheorghiu.

Primarily, this is a movie about class and how everything can be bought and sold through connections, bribes, and favors, just like in any post-communist eastern European country. But on the surface, this is an incredible character study of a controlling mother who can't quite figure out where she went wrong that her son ended up like this, complemented by a lack of music and long periods of poignant silence of contemplation. She clearly loved him very much, but it didn't stop him from turning into a man-child with no aspirations and more insecurities than even his all-seeing mother could perceive. It's all been done wonderfully. Every actor gives it their best. From a subtle entitlement frown to vile disgust to feigned grief. Unfortunately, the hand-held filming doesn't produce vivid images or scenes, and it's just shot/reverse shot through the whole movie.

I just loved this. What an intimate delivery all around, of a very real family situation. Audience must speculate a bit about the mother/son relationship, but that's part of its uniqueness.

Un guion fantástico, y actuaciones increíbles, la ganadora del Oso de Oro 2013 en Berlín es imperdible.

On the one hand this is a deeply disturbing glimpse into the psychology of an overtly-privilleged family and a mother trying to do anything to save her son from paying for an accidental murder. On the other it is a scathing socio-political allegory of Eastern Europe's "Nouveau Riche" entitlement and a system that supports it. A tough slice of neorealism made sharp as a knife and devastating by an unforgettable performance form Luminita Gheorghiu as the savagely desperate mother.

We had to wait a few years to get a true follower to Cristi Puiu's "The Death of Mr Lazarescu". The romanian comedies were great, esp. "Filantropica", "12:08 East of Bucharest" and Adrian Sitaru's "Domestic". But Cristi Puiu's followup couldn't match his first, and even if I really liked the more conventional dramas from Porumboiu, Mungiu, Radu Muntean and Marian Cri?an, Puiu was the only follower of the legendary Lucian Pintilie from the Ceau?escu era. Now Puiu's cameraman Andrei Butica and writer R?zvan R?dulescu hooked up with unknown C?lin Peter Netzer to redo the successful drama of Lazarescu, just with a bigger ensemble and bigger drama. It's also a risc to go with a negative hero, but in all the denial and arrogance, there's always humanity and passion for our poor lady, who has to fix the situation for her poor son, who killed a boy in a car accident. The ensemble is the best of the best of Rumanian drama, the real only evil villain is again Vlad Ivanov, the abortionist of Mungiu's "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days" in his best role so far.

Clave.

That's it. Fuck art movies. I don't want to keep torturing myself watching this stuff. This movie is so heavy and real that you might as well go to a support group or emergency room and it will probably be less traumatizing. Why anyone would make a movie about a child being run over by a careless man child with mommy issues is beyond me. This is truly a remarkable case of why humanity is doomed. No one should be allowed to make a film about something this depressing. Now, the acting is impeccable and the script is amazing. How anyone could have made this stuff interesting is beyond me. So if you're in psychosuicidal mood, watch this. Otherwise go to the lego movie.

paths to nowhere ... *** This review may contain spoilers *** I am really really surprised by the good ratings this one is receiving - I was in the cinema for this and for other Berlinale films and this one got only courtesy applause (and compared to Krugovi practically no applause). Never mind it won the golden bear - i stick with the audience on this. The hand-held camera is awful, making you seasick very quickly, the film doesn't manage to create any mood and does not even know what it is about. It could be about many topics - the social problems in Romania, corruption in Romania, overprotective Balkan mothers (I know a lot) and what they do to their children or maybe the struggle of such a child against its mother, the lack of responsibility in the society, even about the conditions of the roads in Romania. Well, the film chooses none of it. It goes on and on, without getting a point, without getting a direction, without even understanding the situation in my opinion. This one became perfectly clear to me once I saw a short interview with the director, who was talking something about Oedipus complex - the one thing which was not even partially in the movie. So if you like a lot of minute longs sequences leading to nowhere, films which make no point and have no direction, can't even decide whether a driver killing a child did something bad (yeah, he feels a bit bad, but well, he is sorry, see, so it's OK to drive with 140 on Romanian roads, poor poor guy) - this is all you need. I for my part would warn anyone - do not waste your time - there is nothing here.

The Dogma-style movie making starts off looking less like an intentional style and more like lazy camerawork, avoidance of editing, and incompetent lighting. It settles down after a while into a more professional looking product. The story is a bit cliched but is saved by the performances, particularly C?lin Peter Netzer as the mother, and by some growth in the character of the son.

Gritty and raw domestic drama circulating around a car accident of the son and his mother's ceaseless pedantic drive to do all she can and control. Rich in layers and very strong

Mesmeric presentation.

Strange title, but a really excellent film. Great characterisation and acting - very gripping and it really gets to you - thought provoking and well worth a viewing. Hadn't realised Child's Pose is a yoga position. That has absolutely nothing to do with the film.

A dark dramatic film about a dis functional fa,ily torn apart by a tragic accident.
