The Bleeder Reviews
[A] bruising biopic...
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Aug 13, 2021
Chuck is a solid addition to the boxing movie subgenre. It, of course, borrows some imagery and tropes from previous films but it tells a complete and compelling story...

Chuck exists on the other side of a coin, showing the dark reality of Rocky's idealized fantasy. That alone is enough reason to pay attention to the tragedy of Chuck Wegner.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Sep 24, 2020
Chuck paints a picture of a truly relatable, human protagonist, one whose ability to own his flaws and work to make amends makes him much more engaging than any at the center of a more classically designed biopic.

There are lessons to be learned and we do so with [Chuck] while enjoying the chaos for laughs.
| Original Score: 7/10 | Oct 12, 2018
... if you like little oddball slices of (mostly) forgotten history and don't mind a shaggy story, this is a smallish, fun movie.

From a general outline, the story here is fascinating and worth telling (especially on the big screen), but the journey of Chuck is full of bumps, bruises, and bleeding
| Original Score: 2/5 | Dec 5, 2017
Schreiber is outstanding as the title character, but he also has a great supporting cast.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Oct 29, 2017
The acting saves Chuck from being just the umpteenth white boxer biopic, but we're fast approaching the copy-of-a-copy-of-a-copy stage of this genre.
| Original Score: B- | Oct 16, 2017
What makes the film work at all is Schreiber, one of those actors who is watchable doing just about anything, even if he does it in an ugly pornstache and an uglier plaid overcoat.

So, a reserved endorsement for Chuck. Like its main character, the movie stumbles and lumbers, but manages to survive.
| Aug 30, 2017
Chuck is a good movie about a noteworthy boxer because it shows his equally, if not more difficult battles out of the ring.

If there's any justice, Schreiber will find himself in next year's Best Actor race for his performance here, as he completely inhabits the role.
| Original Score: 8.5/10 | Aug 26, 2017
Chuck is an interesting character study, and thanks to Schreiber's self-deprecating narration and blunt confessionals, we feel for Wepner and his struggles.
| Aug 11, 2017
Yet you root for this movie the same way you might have rooted for Wepner. It's not a contender by any stretch of the imagination, but it has a certain tough, hard-earned nobility.
| Original Score: 86/100 | Jun 2, 2017
Chuck is a more than a worthwhile footnote to the continuing cultural significance still enjoyed by Rocky.

Moss and Schreiber produce what may be the best performances of their careers to make this film work.
| Original Score: 8/10 | May 27, 2017
Chuck takes a lot of punches, but it lands some good ones, too.
| Original Score: 3/4 | May 25, 2017
We don't need another formulaic boxing biopic. Good thing Chuck TKOs the genre mold.
| Original Score: 3/4 | May 25, 2017
Like Wepner's favorite movie, Chuck is a requiem for a heavyweight, a palooka with nothing left but pride.
