The Bleeder Reviews

This guy is a mess and I dislike everything about him, which tells me it's a decent film. Worth a watch to anyone interested in the guy Rocky is based off of.

A boxing movie that isn't about the boxing itself. And it's good true story and some great acting.

This is a really well told and interesting biopic on the life of Chuck Wepner ("the real life Rocky"). It held my interest from start to finish. Released in the U.S. as simply titled "Chuck."

I thought it was an interesting movie and story about the life of Chuck Wepner, the real Rocky Balboa. It was hard not to continually feel sorry for him as he was surrounded by people who loved him, including his own family members, and he couldn't see it as he continually blew that part of his life along with movie parts for Rocky.

An enjoyable watch and an interesting true story. Anyone who loved Rocky should watch this to know more about the Check Webner.

Fairly cut and dry biopic narrative of a boxer who’s brief moment in the sun came after a series of promoter negations led to a chance at the heavyweight belt fighting Muhammad Ali post Ali’s defeat of Foreman. The 15 minutes of fame came after despite understandably nearly unanimous opinion among fight fans and insiders that the event would be a joke in Ali’s favor; Chuck displayed phenomenal endurance going 15 rounds with Ali before the the ref called the fight short on only an 8 count knockdown by Ali in the final 12 seconds before the wounding of the bell. The film then follows the typical narrative of a man’s struggle to recognize the sudden mass adoration and celebrity status, also fueled in great part by learning his underdog performance standing tall against Ali was the inspiration behind Sly Stallone making the Rocky franchise, created a false sense of grandeur that would become his eventual downfall. Like so many other films portraying a meteoric rise to fame, and a sobering fall back to reality once the legions of fans, adoring masses of beautiful women and of course cash flow all come to an inevitable grinding stop. My main issue with the film is it reminded me of what “Wolf Of Wallstreet” would run like if Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill didn’t have great chemistry, an obscene amount of wealth, didn’t lack any conventional sense of a moral compass, had no crazy stories to tell and instead Scorsese filmed two hours of SEC hearings and submitted a story of two characters learning to love life without excess post wire fraud conviction. Lev Schreiber did a fine job with making what he could out of the scripts dialogue, the pacing was fine I guess, cinematography, and editing were adequate. It was just really disappointing to me because there’s a lot of interesting stuff throughout Chuck’s life and career that was also really bizarre, it’s confusing as to why the director chose to not emphasize these facets of the boxer’s life during filming, choosing instead to touch briefly on them and making the viewer feel like they’d just finished watching a two part A&E biography series...

Here's a boxing film that might fight itself into your top ten sports movies. Director Philippe Falardeau hits all the right notes: gets knockout performances from the entire cast, jabs and weaves a moving story, and lands a convincing production set in 1970s New Jersey.

I didn't like it as much as I'd hoped but Chuck or The Bleeder is a decent biopic despite its slow pace.

An indie drama, Chuck tells the story of the real life Rocky, Chuck the "Bayonne Bleeder" Wepner. The film follows professional Philadelphia boxer Chuck Wepner who gets a shot at the heavy weight boxing championship with Muhammad Ali, and soon after learns that Hollywood has made a film inspired by the fight and his life, and becomes obsessed with the film and rides its fame. Liev Schreiber gives a really strong performance, as does Naomi Watts. And the script has a nice pace and does a good job at using a first person narrative. However, it's a little underdeveloped; not going too much into his boxing career or substance abuse issues. Also, the plot is kind of familiar; following a typical biopic formula with a rise, a fall, and a redemption. Yet despite its problems, Chuck is an interesting and cautionary tale about the dangers of reflected glory.

Perfectly acted and extremely believable - well played.

Great movie. Despite a number of cliches in its true story, this film overcomes them with a compelling subject, stellar direction and a brilliantly charismatic performance from Schreiber.

The real-life inspiration for Rocky. A pretty decent biopic on Chuck Wepner, who fell just seconds short of going the distance with Muhamad Ali and inspired Sylvester Stallone's hit film Rocky.

The main action and plot of this movie happens in fits and starts. The beginning of this movie promises a climax of a boxing match with Ali and Chuck, but within the first 30 minutes we have reached the climax. I liked that this movie went beyond the glix and glamour, but I think some shortening could have helped. I loved Elizabeth Moss and Liev Schneider (Jim Gaffigan’s character was annoying and seemed to be a throw away despite my love of Jim Gaffigan). Overall I liked this movie and would recommend it to most people.

Correct. L'histoire du vrai Rocky.

It's been a while since the last good boxing movie. So this is about an athlete that you don't know that you know: Chuck Wepner. He's the inspiration behind the character of Rocky Balboa, and it is now his turn for his story to be told. Now I love Rocky, it just took me far longer than it should have taken any self-respecting film critic to have watched it (and I still haven't had the chance to watch all the sequels). I heard good things about Chuck, and I will start off by saying that I think that this is excellent and lived up to everything that I was expecting. Now while I admittedly have not found the time to watch Schreiber's claim to fame in the television series Ray Donovan, all I can do is shrug my shoulders. We are living in a golden age of television, and I don't have the time to watch all of the shows that I want to watch, never mind shows that I have heard are good in passing. That said, I already knew that Schreiber has the talent, but I've never seen him give a performance like the one he delivers here. He truly became Wepner to the point that I didn't see the actor anymore when he was onscreen. He's a New Jersey boy through and through, and he's got personality. He talks trash a lot, and it is wildly different than what you see in today's match-ups (just look at McGregor/Mayweather promos, it is more like a Jerry Springer show now). The story is fun and moves at a good clip, and then you realize that there is still about an hour left to go after his big Rocky fight in his life is over. That is when you get to the meat of what this movie is at its heart: a drama with real emotion. When you get past the small amount of glory this man has experienced, it is plain to see what a mess he is, he just happened to have this one good thing that he was lucky enough to experience. Because it is so much fun in the beginning, you genuinely grow to care for this character, so when you watch him self-destruct, you have a palpable reaction. I really got into this a lot, and I don't really have any big negative points against this to bring up. I think Chuck is one of the best surprises of the year, and I highly recommend it.

I felt the acting was great in this movie. I would recommend you to see the movie

Well acted, your actually start to feel for the guy.

That was disappointing. The best part of the movie is the 1970's atmosphere, the cars, clothes, surroundings and the Sylvestore Stallone accent by the actor playing Stallone. Other than that it wasn't all that interesting of a movie and that is coming from an avid boxing fan. I enjoyed the references to the 70's boxing scene but there was nothing else that warrants more than 2 stars.
