Cinderella Man Reviews

Apr 17, 2025

One of my all new favorite boxing biopics.

Great acting, some scenes dragged a little and it was a bit cheesy but over all worth a watch

A powerhouse of a movie. Every performance pitch perfect. Crisp dialogue. A movie with something to say about The Great Depression. At its core; beyond being inspirational, beyond the blows we see coming at the screen, is a love story. Which for me is the hook. I love this movie.

After learning about the history of legendary boxer James Braddock, I thought I would give CINDERELLA MAN a try, and boy did it really deliver.

Mostly fabricated and untrue. For once Ron Howard completely misses the mark. Possibly defames some of the background characters by changing historical facts. If you want an underdog story watch Rocky.

You know it’s crazy sometimes when you come up on a movie and all of a sudden you get glued right into the action automatically this story just caught my eye one night. I was watching it In the background as I gradually got drawn and deeper and deeper Into it as it ran. It’s an amazing movie that I can grab your attention and enjoy in this movie had done just that. You won’t be disappointed. Well done on the acting all around. Great story.

I picked up the BluRay at a thrift store for $3. Was it worth it? Well, the movie is fine. It's a straightforward story of a family with a father who boxes. It takes place during The Depression. I liked how you saw things happen to other families and then to this one, each family dealing with it in their own way. Since I did not know the outcome of the true story, the final scenes did feel suspenseful. Unfortunately, I kept comparing this to Rocky in my head, so that took away a little of the experience. The acting is fine, but I would say there was nothing exceptional. As for the BluRay, it is loaded with features. I do have a gripe, however. Sometimes features are just longer documentaries cut up to make attention-span-length extras. This leads to the same scenes appearing in several of the features. That makes me feel like I've seen something before and should turn it off. All in all, I think this is a good watch. I wouldn't fight seeing it again, but I wouldn't go out of my way to make it happen. Buying the disc was not worth it.

I really enjoyed the fight scenes and the depression stuff. Crowe came across as an idiot occasionally - maybe that was just bad acting. Zellwegger's part lacked depth. The coach was the most compelling actor and deserved his nominations. Only 3 stars since I objected to the characterisation of Baer as being some kind of killing machine. He was nothing of the sort and was greatly affected by the death of an opponent. That kind of liberty with the facts makes me puke.

Other than the terrible portayl of Max Baer,it's a great movie

During the depression, this is a story of an underdog who goes from bread line to heavyweight boxing champ of the world. Most of the movie shows his family, how they support & inspire him. But also how the public idolizes him.

Although an older movie, I just recently watched it for the first time. Really excellent true story. Not into boxing, but I was really into it. Good acting from Russell Crowe and Renee Z.

I enjoyed watching this movie. It is an overcomer movie of hard times as a boxer that has to pull up from a depression era.

I felt the punches in this movie, and cheered for Braddock every step of the way.

An All Time Classic. This is basically a superior Rocky II because while this does tug at the heart strings as well, it isn't as blatant. The music is very good but not as memorable or catchy as the Rocky films have for the most part. The buildup, investment, and sincerity told is phenomenal across the board fundamentally speaking. You don't even have to even like sports movies to enjoy this. It's that good. Everyone should see this once.

This is a good underdog film. Russell Crowe, Paul Giamatti and Renee Zellweger give solid performances. The film is long and can feel slow in some places but the boxing scenes alone make up for this. Every punch feels real and Crowe's acting makes you feel his characters pain with each hit he takes. Worth watching if you enjoy boxing films or true history stories.

A true story that seems to be too good for some critics. They don't like it because there is not enough sleeze in it. The movie is amazing as is the story. What makes it amazing is the fact it is true. Crow does a great job and the Zellweger and Giamatti are excellent in their rolls. I guess if he had left his wife blown the money and ended up in the gutter the critics would have liked it more. He bought a home with the prize money raised his family not far from where he grew up. Great job in real life and in the movie.
