Climax Reviews
There is so much potential here, and it's so frustrating that Noé didn't go even further. Apparently, Climax was shot with only a 5 page long script and it shows.

The film documents the dissipation of idealism and the gradual slide into self-annihilation...

Less a film and more an experience (an anxiety-inducing one, at that), Climax is a fascinating and stressful watch.

Noe invites that curiosity with every film, like a giggling schoolboy who has set a whoopie cushion on a chair and can barely contain his laughter as someone approaches to sit.

Episode 35: Triple Frontier / Climax / Black Mother / Transit

What makes Climax such an impressive feat is how it makes you constantly feel whatever energy is present in each scene.

It's horrifying, hypnotic, seductive, and impossible to look away from.
| Original Score: 5 /5 | Jun 25, 2021
The result is an interesting visual experiment, but a tedious and ultimately hollow one-scenes from other Euro horrors like Possession and Suspiria aren't so much referenced as flat-out recreated, as if Climax doesn't have anything new to add.

This film is a wild and it's brutal which is completely expected but what I love the most about this film is its simplicity... Sickly satisfying to watch.
| Original Score: 8/10 | Dec 18, 2020
Climax's teeny weeny script is basically just a premise...

I haven't been so annihilated by a movie since mother! -- so dry in the mouth, so red in the face, so dazed while leaving the theater.
| Original Score: 4.5/5 | Jul 27, 2020
There's no denying the director's diabolic skill at ushering his audience from one circle of Hell to another...and in fact sparking anticipation of what new awful, can't-unsee-it spectacle is lurking just around the next dark corner.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 26, 2020
Climax transitions from trippy exercise to endurance test fairly quickly, and if you make it to the other side, you and those around you can take pride in the bonding experience of reaching the end.

It's lack of substance can easily be confused with something breakthrough and new. [Full review in Spanish]

Regardless the various attempts at shock value (with scenes involving self-mutilation and abortion) seem downright desperate.

The playlist might be impeccable, you might get home before bedtime, but it's all still much too much.

Just like Possession, this tale of stylized hysteria is an absolute scream.

At the end of it all, this twisted horror tale is a fascinating demonstration of moviemaking prowess, but beyond that, the message seems either too obvious or even frivolous.

Climax doesn't exactly have a point to make, but as an exercise in visceral filmmaking, it passes with flying colors.

It's empty excess for the sake of it.
