Climax Reviews
Too many characters with not enough development. Poor pacing, 40 minutes of background that was slow and felt drawn out. It does pick up in the second half but I don't think it was worth the investment. The writing also felt lacking between gossip and dance. The only thing that I felt they did exceptionally were the shots and the cast's skill in dance. There was some good symbolism but not enough to redeem it.
I think this is actually the most accurate, compelling portrayal of the effects of LSD and why it's a toxic drug that in my opinion no one should ever use at all. Just say no, kids.
Sayang oras. Ito yung tipong aantukin ka & makakaramdam ng bored kung worth it pa ba ituloy ang panunuod. Mas marami, mahaba pa ang mga sayaw na akala mo e mga production number sa isang show kesa sa mismong horror ng kwento.
Definitely a film you have to be patient with for the first half. The initial first half seems like a slog, but it does give insight into the psyche of these people before they descend into drug induced madness. Definitely not a film for everyone, but the way the second half of the film is shot in a single take is pretty awe inspiring - given the complexity of emotions needed to sell this story. It’s a film that dares to dive into the psyche of each tripping subject the camera comes across, and leaves you with a reminder that perception is everything.
Dear Lord this movie is boring. I understand wanting a build-up to the tension and set the stage, but this opening is unbelievably dreadful. I am 30 minutes in and so far and every section in this film feels 7 minutes too long. 10 minutes of introductions for each character talking about the reasons they love dance, what they're willing to do to make it etc. Already you're faced with the most aggressively irritating type of people, but fine, some viewers might like this type. Having a relatively unlikeable cast of characters can even elevate a horror film, so long as you don't hit the audience with a follow up of... 10 minutes of dancing at their party. I don't even need to say why this is just soul-sucking for anyone that came for horror and is now watching... this. Even then, some people might actually love dance party horror, maybe that's even a thing. All I know is that you definitely lose me if your next move is... 10 minutes of the same irritating people having more or less the same irritatingly boring party conversations 3 or 4 different ways. That's 30 whole minutes of literally NOTHING interesting happening at all. So far this movie feels like a performing arts dance group got drunk at a house party one day and decided to make a horror film while AT the party. They quickly realised that they knew nothing about what constitutes even a halfway decent horror flick, so they spent the time making a filmed showcase of the only skill they actually had... dance. I'm sure some people enjoy this, but I won't be giving it 30 more minutes of my time.
This Movie is a Baaad LSD Trip. But in a good Way. I love the one Shot Camera angles. This is one of the most disturbing movies i know.
It might be the worst a24 movie.
I believe Gaspar Noé has a directorial knack for pushing function and technique over storytelling. He likes long-winded, uncut takes with a roving camera. He likes to utilize production tools and tricks to create an environment that will feel familiar to the viewer yet also harsh at the same time. I didn't care for this movie. Caring about or connecting with any characters was difficult as the movie felt too cold and distant. I felt sympathy for the demise of a few of them. But no signs of feeling any empathy.
Amazing dancing at the start but it goes downhill from there. I’m a big fan of both LSD and avante-garde films, but I just wish there was more going on here than people acting like they are freaking out scene after scene.
Only Gaspar Noe can create like this. A horrible story portrayed in cinematic expertise.
While this film builds towards the first real event in its ultraviolent plot, expect at least 20 minutes of dance sequences with no dialogue that no mainstream film audience would sit through and maybe 30 minutes of stupid interviews and chat. Noe's idea was a battle royale and sex scenes, I imagine, although I admit I was very impressed that the lines were all written or improvised by the actors! I suppose you can credit Noe for not being afraid of the dark fringes of sexuality. However, it's hard to imagine what kind of person would be excited, aroused or interested in anything in this film, as the erotic dancing and scenes in this film are easily overhwelmed by the cringeworthy, petty, unnecessary violence. Some of the brutality seemed to make no sense, even in the context of an LSD party. The killing of mulltiple children, and the man breaking his own arms, woman slashing her own arms, really drove home the emptiness of the characters and senselessness of the violence. The violence was comic and camp and reached horror-like levels. I left the film feeilng nauseated, like I was having a panic attack and I felt like the audience in the theatre around me would have been ashamed to say they liked any aspect of it. I didn't care for the actual logos and shoutouts placed shamelessly right before the violence begins, it felt like watching a sporting event. Way to ruin art with that innovation!
A waking nightmare. Sweaty, scary, paranoid hysteria. Love the dancer concept.
It feels like what would happen if Larry Clark moved to France and watched too much Godard. I’m pretty convinced that no one involved in this film has ever done LSD. Lots of hot people acting ratchet and moaning for duration of film. I would like to meet the director so I could put on a tube top, writhe around and scream in his face.
There should be supervision for everything in the world. A good first act. But it ends with the movie.
This is a wild French movie that requires subtitles, but is blatantly sexual - with no translation needed. 24 dancers, with many so androgynous it keeps you guessing. Great dancing. However, LSD does not cause insanity, etc. so the premise is way off base.
Hmmm how to make an artsy movie?? I know! Let's talk for half the movie, scream and act stupid for the second half, then flip the camera upside down for the last 20 minutes! Oh, and don't forget to kick a pregnant girl in the stomach!! VOILA!!
Fantastic. One of my top ten favourite films. Stylish, jarring, intense until the very last second of the film. Very skilled actors weaving a harrowing and high energy tale.
Terrifying but a blast
Incredible movie and acting!!! Need more movies like this!!!
Un mal viaje de acido y nada mas
