A tough watch... Characters are continuously in motion and behave like they should, not as they want. [Full review in Spanish]

Perhaps a bit arduous at times, but almost always fetching and fascinating. [Full review in Spanish]

Whereas identity, time, and works of art are better understood within clearly demarcated boundaries, Assayas' film suggests that none of these concepts is permanent.
| Original Score: 4/4 | Mar 2, 2022
A compelling meditation on women's vulnerabilities, interpersonal relationships and interdependencies, need for recognition and self-expression and so much more. The cinematic values, too, are exquisite in the extreme.

There is a great deal to enjoy here, from Assayas' intelligent, insightful script, which muses on the changing nature of fame and theatrical artistry, to the whip smart dialogue.

It was made for me! And it is delicious.

Assayas never makes it over-the-top: the sexual tension between the two women are subtly presented, never vulgar. And the storytelling is brimming with intelligence but never feels trickery.

Never has a film so successfully captured the strengths, weaknesses, fears, desires, and passions of women as Clouds of Sils Maria.

Both [Kristen Stewart] and Binoche shine in the film; they're electric individually and together.

Assayas never set out to contemplate the (un)reality of [the celebrity actor] world in the first place. Or did he?

Sils Maria is the ultimate hangout movie. Maybe when I say hangout movie you think of Richard Linklater or Kevin Smith, but I'd take Kristen Stewart and Juliette Binoche spending quality time on a mountain over those any day. [TOP 50 FILMS OF THE DECADE]

It took its time, but Clouds of Sils Maris is definitely a memorable and thought-provoking festival watch driven home by the excellent performances and chemistry between Binoche and Stewart.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 30, 2019
Assayas has built a beautiful character driven drama of depth and resonance all centered around the interactions between three women with well-developed complex rules.
| Original Score: 4.5/5 | Aug 5, 2019
While Assayas is busy naval-gazing, the three actresses manage to snatch Clouds of Sils Maria away from him - keeping the focus where it ought to be in the first place.

Clouds of Sils Maria pertinently discusses the nature of interpreting art, but its tedious attention to paparazzi-plagued celebrities is shallower and skews its already meandering trajectory.
| Original Score: 3/5 | May 10, 2019
Clouds of Sils Maria is at its most captivating when observing the discourse between Binoche and Stewart as the pair masterfully ricochet lines off one another in a volatile ballet of remarkable linguistic dexterity.

It's rare to see such a well-developed, female-centric dramas these days, so kudos to Assayas for writing/directing one that also feels authentic.
