Creation Stories Reviews

Alan McGee made an everlasting impact on British culture. Creation Stories sadly doesn’t make the same impact and is unlikely to live forever in the cinematic zeitgeist.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Nov 12, 2022

There is rightly so much cultural history to be packed in and it takes a writer the calibre of Irvine Welsh, McGee's real-life mate, to do it justice.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 17, 2022

The adaptation of the fantastical rise and fall of Creation Records' founder attempts to capture the topsy-turvy vibe of its era, but falls short.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Mar 15, 2022

Creation Stories is a paint by number biopic that overuses narration and cheap editing to try to distract viewers. Perhaps the writers are too close to McGee as this film, as it trivialises the ecstasy driven raves...

| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 11, 2022

The actors Scottish accents might feel impenetrable at times, but aside from that, the film handles and indulges every corner of Alan McGees very crowded life...

| Original Score: 3/4 | Mar 3, 2022

Complimented by an excellent soundtrack, Creation Stories is an energetic biopic that never quite captures the energy and excitement of the Cool Britannia years.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Mar 2, 2022

Becomes a hyperventilating “Behind the Music” caricature, all familiar flash and precious little substance.

| Feb 25, 2022

For much of its running time the movie’s reverb knob is set high, and what’s echoing are the movies “Trainspotting” and “24 Hour Party People."

| Feb 24, 2022

Id just skip this movie and go back and listen to all the great records McGee released.

| Original Score: 6/10 | Feb 23, 2022

Creation Stories is chirpily nostalgic for the heady days when Creation Records struck gold with records that resonated with millions of people.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jul 22, 2021

The storytelling feels formulaic but director Nick Moran's Alan McGee biopic gathers steam from lead Ewan Bremner and, of course, its astounding source material and music.

| Jul 20, 2021

A superficial rebellion draped over a disappointingly stale form. Basically, it's like sticking safety pins on a t-shirt pre-torn at The Gap.

| Jun 30, 2021

While Creation Stories isn't transgressive, it is amiable, and for some viewers that will be enough.

| Jun 29, 2021

The one constant through the many swerves and chapters in Moran's proficiently directed but unfocused film is Bremner's eccentric portrayal.

| Jun 17, 2021

Grab your bucket hat, this drug-fuelled nostalgia-fest is absolutely mad for it.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Apr 29, 2021

There's no shaking its general adherence to the rock biopic genre, but there's also no doubting its alluring energy.

| Apr 20, 2021

Like Trainspotting, Creation Stories is cheerfully confrontational and Bremner gives a riveting performance as the brash, rebellious, indulgent entrepreneur.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Apr 17, 2021

The script is overly convoluted in that muddy second act and the film is so indebted to the styles of its antecedents that it has very little of its own. But, like Bremner, it's energetic, a bit wild, and, essentially, fun.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Apr 12, 2021

It's kind of fun, not much more than that, and Trainspotting-lite, but it's fun.

| Mar 30, 2021

...frenetic editing, drug-induced partying and chaotic energy is fun to watch for its real-world references, but runs thin easily.

| Original Score: 12/20 | Mar 28, 2021
