Criminal Reviews
Regretfully, Criminal makes up for its lack of ideas with blood, guts and even more blood.

A dull, yet star-studded production that feels like a 1990s action movie throwback - complete with over-the-top villains, ruthless violence, and an absurd premise.

The only thing that is Criminal about this movie, is that they have gotten away with making it.

There's not just a good movie but a great one buried deep within this mess of espionage cliches.

Who owed who money or a favor? How did this film get made with so many big names?

Not a travesty, there isn't much to recommend "Criminal" to anyone outside of Kevin Costner completists.

A unique take on a CIA spy thriller with a Frankenstonian spin, Criminal is a hard-hitting, tech-savvy, high octane adrenaline rush with underlying social and moral implications ripe for discussion.

Criminal wants to give the impression of being a more thoughtful film than it actually is.

For the most part it's a pretty by the number thriller, riddled with cliches, that slightly sets itself apart because of its sheer insanity.

Kevin Costner is an engaging and complex character that shows different depths throughout the film.

Criminal is a harmless, if disposable piece of pre-summer entertainment, and as is so often the case, even when the material doesn't measure up, Kevin Costner is just eminently watchable.

They all yell at the sky while shaking their fists, utter overly dramatic lines with such conviction, and seem fully aware of the absurdity of the film.

Criminal has plot holes you can drive a submarine through, but thanks to Costner's...sensitive performance, the audience starts to root for its heroic villain, and may well cheer when he reaches for a weaponized cactus.

"Criminal" ultimately lacks finesse and the stakes don't feel powerful enough to bring the suspense to a head. Despite the multi-talented cast, the film is a thriller that is rather forgettable.

I really wish the cinema just would have accidentally shown the far superior Face/Off
| Original Score: 2/5 | Dec 5, 2017
Sure, there is a fair bit of violence. And yes, it might seem needlessly gratuitous at times but you can let that slip as you've probably not seen Costner in this challenging a role (for him at least) in quite a while.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 7, 2017
The really depressing thing is that good actors such as Gary Oldman and Tommy Lee Jones are involved in this tosh.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Oct 24, 2017
There is no reason to ever see this movie.

Criminal can get rather one-note, but Costner and the other stellar cast, including Reynolds, deliver fine performances that elevate the material.

There is a lot to enjoy in Criminal; enough, in fact, for it to remind us that such guilty pleasures shouldn't be thought of as crimes against humanity.
