Croupier Reviews

Mar 13, 2025

I “bet” you won’t like it!

Clive Owen was exceedingly charming in this

Very poor, low budget 90’s tv quality production. Such a corny script and stilted acting. I think the main character is supposed to be ‘cool’ but he just comes off as autistic. DON’T BOTHER!

It was a good movie that was engaging. It's worth the watch.

Overrated. No way does it deserve 95% from critics. Standards were lower 25 years ago? Yes Clive Owen is very good, and the details about how casinos and gambling work are interesting, but these things do not make up for really puzzling elements in the plot. And I never really thought I cared about lighting in movies that much, but every scene feels like it was filmed under fluorescent lights. Not a single room in the entire movie evokes an interesting sense of atmosphere. I saw another review at that calls this movie self-serious, and I think that is an excellent descriptor as well.

Critic Roger Ebert said that the point of this film was not the plot, but the atmosphere and characterization. Which explains why I had difficulty following the plot. Good acting, which kept this sad movie interesting.

Suffers from a low budget and a lack of empathy for the lead. It's okay, but looks cheap and lacks any real style or believability as a result of the rather stilted script.

Jack Manfred (Clive Owen) is a struggling novelist who accepts employment, arranged entirely by his father, as a croupier in a London casino. What makes Croupier so intriguing is Manfred's moral ambiguity throughout the film – he is a dealer who rejects the idea of gambling on principle, but ignores his principles when it comes to being faithful to his girlfriend or becoming engaged in a plot to steal from his employer. Owen is excellent in the lead role, giving life to a droll and expressionless cad who wants to do the right thing but lacks the moral compass to do so. Croupier is gritty and stylish throughout, making it easy to overlook the ‘twist' at the end, a turn of events that is more likely to cause a shrug than it is to cause any sort of excitement or enlightenment.

Good fun in all. Clive Owen is oh so droll. Alex Kingston gives a strong performance, in and out of her costume gowns. All the ladies were good, McKee and Hardie as well. Competent writing by Mayersberg, better directing by Hodges. 3.2 stars

There are some surprises along the way, but the story isn't high art.

I like Clive Owen, and some o the other acting was good, but the movie drags on for a long time without much significant action, or a compelling story line. Wish I hadn't wasted the time.

i really enjoyed this one! i think Clive played the straight-laced silent dealer very well; all the love scenes looked uncomfortable though i wished they had stayed away from those. i didn't see the twist at the end coming right away & it was well done. i'd recommend this one for sure.

A man who is addicted to watching people loose.

A great film noir that moves briskly and ratchets the suspense with skill. Clive Owen is excellent as the cold-as-ice croupier.

A film comes along occasionally that simply knocks your socks off. I hadn't seen much of Clive Owen before this. I just knew him as a B or C tier star, and one not to fuss too much over either way. I stand corrected, but cannot think why he has not breached the very top levels of acting with his talents. Perhaps he simply got his international break too late? At any rate, he is outstanding in this one and his character is written superbly. He is a conniving, self-important oaf with a god complex, yet we are made to cheer for him every step of the way. He is the focal point for a film whose sardonicism and cynicism make it undeniably amusing for anyone willing to view the film as a satirical, vacuous joy ride. Even the narration does not detract from the experience. At first it is jarring, but the audience comes to immerse themselves into the madness and peculiarity of this irreverent, monotonous style. We laugh at Jack for his cruelty and machinations more than ironically about witnessing a man narrating his every move in the third-person. Yes, the female characters are largely objectified, but I think that this contributes tonally to Croupier. We force ourselves to see proceedings through Jack's eyes, and to see women as little more than objects, along with the seedy lives and doings of all he comes across. In fact, the men are objects in this world. All are pawns and non-entities to Jack and to the audience, but somehow this works for entertainment. Nothing in the film remains untainted, all elements are bombarded with a constant flow of moral muck that somehow leaves you constantly desiring more. This is a film that could mean something and nothing. It is aimless yet biting in its insight concerning the society it crafts. The viewer may choose any direction to formulate their opinion, and this is how it should be. What more could you ask for?

There's way WAY too much narration in this film. It pulls you away from the film's drama. Some of narration is interesting but by the end of the movie I was sick of it.

The acting was enticing, kept me interested is who the characters are, what is their story and along comes a confusing ending that made no sense at all

This is one of my favorite films. Deep philosophy in a world that many haven't seen. No spoilers!

Slow, flat, laboured, tried for Film Noir bored-looking, world-weary, utterly cynical main character with inner voice-over narration but no characterture wit, style nor charm.
