I want to know more about The Crying Game.

🏳️‍⚧️This 1992 thriller follows a member of the IRA, who has a brief but meaningful encounter with a British soldier who is being held prisoner by the group, and later develops an unexpected romantic relationship with the soldier's girlfriend. A very original and though-provoking story that would end up getting the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, out of other 5 nominations. The suspenseful film keeps the audience involved and when its famous 'shocking' twist comes, it is deeply engaging to see the main character forced to decide between what he wants and what his nature dictates he must do. Stephen Rea's acting is flawless and his nominations are very well deserved. As controversial as the film may be for its time of release or because of its portrayal of a transgender character from today's perspective, it has undoubtedly become a relevant film that needs to be seen and respected for its subject matter.

Not sure which will ruin your day more -- the horrible script/premise or the unwanted closeup of male genitalia.

Good early 90s staple.

While this movie came across a bit dull at times it had good twists and surprises, and Miranda Richardson looked really good and attractive in the movie. I thought that the plot was set up well too and while some things weren't the most memorable, I also liked the acting.

Well worth watching.

What starts as a film about the IRA kidnapping and killing of an English soldier in Belfast evolves into something quite different when one of the kidnappers seeks out the victim's girlfriend in England in order to ease his guilt. Just when you suspect that you know where things are heading, another unexpected turn presents itself when the past comes back to haunt the kidnapper. The Crying Game is a fascinating film thanks to the wonderful Oscar-winning script by director Neil Jordan and solid performances from Stephen Rea as the IRA member, Jaye Davidson as the girlfriend and Forest Whitaker as the soldier. It also has one of the great twists in movie history – if you've not seen the film, avoid doing any research before watching it. As the wise bartender in the movie says: "who knows the secrets of the human heart?"

It only took me almost three decades to get around to seeing this iconic film that took on so many controversial subjects and introduced some of our very best actors. after such a length of time, many films that were considered avant grade when they were made have become simple camp through changing times, but not this one! It's still a stand out dramatic film!

The twist was shocking but kind of not. She didn't look hot. Anyway, rest of the film was predictable, acting was pretty weak and wooden. Will remember it but not gonna revisit. Just not great.

This drama was terrible. Stephen Rea, Miranda Richardson, Forest Whitaker, Jaye Davidson, and the rest of the cast did a terrible job in this movie. The plot of the movie was peculiar, overdramatic, and tedious. Even though this movie is getting positive ratings, it's not a movie I would recommend. Everyone that said this movie is good has terrible tastes in movies. If you haven't seen it yet, don't waste your time.

Sadly, this movie hasn't aged well. The acting and dialog are rough by today's standards. It now feels like a more modern low-budget indie film. The twist ending wouldn't even make people yawn today. It is what it is and has its place in history - but the world sure has moved on...

Wow, is this movie bonkers. The story in "The Crying Game" is just completely crazy, but the characters' motivations come through so strongly that their choices feel believable. I am a big fan of the director, Neil Jordan, and he really nails it here. I do not understand why he doesn't have more movie credits. Warning, this movie is for mature audiences only for heavy violence and nudity. I give it a B, next time you're in the mood for a movie, this one won't disappoint.

Not exactly the behaviour I expected from an IRA terrorist

Seeing The Crying Game for the first time nearly 30 years after its release, it can't help but feel radically underwhelming. The actual hostage situation is a classic take and the eventual twist is truly unexpected (I was completely unaware of it going in), but the actual relationship between Rea's Fergus and Davidson's Dil seems rather soapy and melodramatic in this day and age, whereas the original reception seems to have genuinely appraised it as a cunning interweaving of politics, action, and romance. Fergus beating up a stalker, their communication through the bartender (hi, Jim Broadbent!), their predictably strained but rather quickly reconciled relationship after Dil's secret is revealed, it all seems terribly formulaic with so many years elapsed, but not classic. The IRA presence seems rather conveniently used, and Richardson's Jude doesn't really convey the menacing or omnipotent nature to make the threat against their lives tangible. All in all, The Crying Game can be appreciated for what it was in its day and age, but has aged poorly. (3/5)
