Cryptozoo Reviews
Cryptozoo is undoubtedly one of the most shockingly violent 2D animated movies I’ve ever seen… and I write this both as a compliment and a disclaimer to sensitive viewers.

It’s this moral conundrum where Cryptozoo finds its most resonance, as it not only challenges the oppressiveness of those who fear and attack Others, but also the self-serving oppression enacted by supposed allies who think they know what’s right.

The plotlines are so fleeting and light that everything gets diluted, and it smells like XXI Century New Age. [Full review in Spanish]

It is intentionally stylized yet very fitting in efforts to ascribe an unusual and distinct tone to this setting.

"The bravura visuals deserve a more original ending than what we get, and yet theres a biblical scale to some of those images that resonate all the more when you pause to consider the exorbitant levels of dedication that went into crafting them."

Even as the medium of animation grows and it seems like the boundaries of the genre are approaching, a film like Cryptozoo will come along and prove just how important and unique the medium can be.

The filmmakers employ watercolor, pencil and other techniques to painstakingly craft a not-safe-for-kids cartoon about a sort of 'Jurassic Park' for 'cryptids.'

If you can appreciate the artwork and soften toward its good intentions, you're in for a treat. If not, well... at least you can't deny it was special.

It's a straightforward test of compassion wherein utopia must burn for its builders to understand it was never a utopia in the first place.
| Original Score: 7/10 | Jan 3, 2022
Utterly bizarre in the best possible way, this lovingly handmade animated feature by writer-director Dash Shaw (originally a comic book/graphic novelist) isn't like anything you've seen before.

Watched in sitges 2021. A film about the respect and being critic with our nowadays. [Full review in Spanish]

In the world of animated films, Cryptozoo is as rare as a unicorn.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Sep 22, 2021
The movie's an elastic workout of sizzling scrawl, fierce graphomania, extruded doodling and compulsive conniptions, yet the temptation to synopsize is readily stamped out by the mere attempt at such foolhardy venture.
| Original Score: 6/10 | Sep 17, 2021
Cryptozoo brings an intriguing, adult-oriented alternative to the slick kiddie animation that has oversaturated the movie business. The hand-drawn graphics are sometimes rough around the edges, but the movie has an adventurous and psychedelic spirit.

Employing a rudimentary hand-drawn visual style, director Dash Shaw's delightfully offbeat creation is based in mythology yet grounded in reality.
| Aug 27, 2021
Writer-director Dash Shaw's story may not be terribly complex, but it's loaded with deeper themes and properly grown-up touches that will win it a following.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 26, 2021
Its fantasy concept is inventive enough to sustain another spectacular display of disparate visual techniques and styles.
| Aug 24, 2021
Though imaginative, often beautifully striking, the ambitions of the film's aims undercut themselves.
| Aug 22, 2021
Unique movie is out there and a whole lot of fun, but not everyone will enjoy its story. Great animation.
| Aug 21, 2021
One thing you could say about the dialogue is that it takes your attention away from how bad the animation is.
