Cutthroat Island Reviews
Maybe bc I am a woman and I used to watch Erroll Flynn movies as a kid, but I really loved this movie and esp bc of Geena Davis her lead-role, strong action role too and funny, which was still an anomaly for me, gave or take a dozen of movies, I still live strong, female roles. She only needed a better actor for the male role (I even forgot his name๐คญ), but I really liked this movie a lot and get the bad reviews, but will bet there are more women of my generation who did love the movie too, coz I am normally much more critical of a movie, but this one, I didnโt have to take seriously, just lots of fun, for me anyway๐ซ
Hard to believe they actually tried to revive the pirate shwashbuckler genre and failed miserably cutthroat island directed by German hack Renny Harlin was a critical and commercial failure and failed to impress audiences or capture the magic of the early pirate movies of the 30s. Now while it may not be as dreadful and horrendous as the legend of Hercules this is still among the worst and one of the reasons of Renny Harlin being such a weak and lousy director it was bassically the decline of his career I know hard to believe a director who rose to film industry in the 80s already became vilified in the 90s. Well some things can be confusing but itโs true. This stars geena Davis who was married to the director and having just been in Oscar run with Thelma and Louise she managed to team with Harlin to play a pirate women who is actually a captain of her ship really??. Davis is sorely miscast here and she acts like she doesnโt seem interested in the role she is in and her interactions with other players are boring and lifeless. The film also has serious pacing issues that in some scenes you feel like falling asleep I heard audiences fell asleep when they were in the theater watching this snooze fest it fails to provide audiences with any excitement. Based on both the box office and reception of this type of film Reviewers may call it the heavens gate of swashbuckler films by at least heavens gate kind of kept interest and had a directors cut which made it a good movie not to mention it was made by a great director ( Michael coming ) cutthroat island doesnโt have nearly anything going for it that would make it anywhere good the direction from Renny Harlin is incompetent he managed to give his then oscar nominated superstar wife a terrible lifeless performance She should be ashamed of him a husband gave his wife her worst performance luckily the divorced and I can only imagine Davis being mad at him for this and filed for divorce because of him making her look like a bad actress. Swashbuckler films are supposed to feature chases, swords fencing, and ship adventure as a result they are to be fun and entertaining yet cutthroat island despite having all that isnโt fun at all the charachters were dull, boring and paper thin and the story/plot was uninspired and unoriginal it doesnโt bring anything new to the genre which thankfully happened with pirates of the carribean unlike that Trilogy from bruckheimer and verbinski cutthroat island fails on every level itโs a yo ho hum yawn all of the pirates of the carribean films are way better than this even the 4th and 5th ones not directed by gore verbinski weโre better than this snooze fest in conclusion cuthroat islqnd is a boring and generic pirate film that doesnโt give us any excitement outside of two scenes and a cameo that I donโt even know who it was but none of that can save it from getting a 3/10 overall lousy film
You can always tell a bad movie when the male lead is prettier than the female one. Waste of Geena Davis. Wate of 2 hours. Feels longer.
๐ 2.7/10 I always kind of wanna like this film, but it just boards me so much but I do like some of the straightforward pirate stuff and sometimes it even kind of feels like Lego pirate vibes or something. but honestly, it never really makes me laugh if anything de banter annoys me, I donโt really care for the characters. Itโs just really flat. It feels like kind of B movie territory, but in my opinion, I just donโt find much out of it. Grade D+
Bot bad but not good. Great visually and costume design was awesome. Great antagonist. Other than that lead actress phoned it in. The characters motivation was very weak. And the actual pirate crew for the protagonist was forgettable and predictable.
I love this film, Davis is the best female pirate of all time. This movie was pulled down for stupid reasons which is a shame as I would of loved to see Davis reprise this role...

Fell in love with the story!
The beginning was a bit off with pacing but I enjoyed the movie overall. I'm not sure what is with all the negative reviews. Mathew Modine was great. Frank Langella was great. Geena Davis worked her tail off as the lead. The set design and non stop action were painstakingly detailed. I don't think anyone can play a lady pirate as well as Geena. I would watch again simply for the technical mastery alone. They don't make this epic movies anymore.
Geena Davis as a pirate just doesn't really work. It's 90s orange-filmed swashbuckling.
It really is as bad as its reputation.
Nothing wrong with this movie. As good as it was back in the mid 90's. Showed it to my 10 and 11 year old kids and they were thoroughly engrossed to the end and wanted to look know if there was a part 2.
One of the worst movies of the 90s this movie was the endpoint of the swashbuckler pirate genre until the pirates of the carribean trilogy wich is far superior than this mess I hated this movie with a passion there was zero chemistry, and bad acting all at its absolute stinking worst I don't get how anyone can enjoy this it's so boring I litteraly fell asleep watching it it was litteraly that bad boo horrible movie ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ 0/10
Geena Davis acts as though she is reading the lunch menu in the catering van and even a reasonably charismatic Frank Langella couldn't rise above this tedious and predictable fiasco. Truly a very poor way to spend an evening, watch it whilst doing your tax on a rainy afternoon with a large glass of alcohol. My cat could have made a better pirate movie!
Utterly unwatchable - I took the extended family on an unbearably hot day - primarily for the air conditioning and despite the heat we walked out after 20 - 30 minutes. I had actually met Renney Harlin & Geena Davis while working in LA & I liked them, so walking out on their movie was a big deal. I truly could not figure out how they could make such a total bomb. There was none of the campy charm that at rare times gives a bad film some redeeming 'so bad it's good' aura. It is, simply put, a terrible picture with zero value.
I have no idea why this movie got so many bad reviews. Personally I love this movie! Watch it yourself and make your own opinion about it.
Perhaps a good demonstration of the problem of a director choosing cast by nepotism. Geena is never convincing as a ruthless pirate. Her voice just fails to carry any kind of edge to it to convince us that the men would all willingly follow her to hell and back. The story rumbles along well-trodden lines with no surprises and even the action pieces don't really convince (the final battle scene is followed by the victorious ship sailing away with not a scratch). It seems to have been filmed in a through-back to 'Glorious Technicolour' of the 1950s; everything is bright and colourful, and unconvincing. Watchable if there is nothing available, but not otherwise.
This movie was panned by critics, but I find it stands the test of time. It is a swashbuckler in the style of Errol Flynn. Gina Davis as the lead is fabulous and I love some of her lines "I have your balls", and "Bad Dog!". The fact that she did all her own stunts adds to the joy of watching it. Yes, there are a couple of stilted passages, but if you are in the mood for some fun, light adventure with a female lead pirate, it is great. Maybe others were put off by a strong female lead? It is entertaining and joyful and is great to re-watch.
I loved it. Geena Davis is excellent in her swashbuckling role. If you enjoy pirate films, watch this and ignore the production overcosts and pretentious critics.
This film got slated but I really enjoyed it.
