The Darjeeling Limited Reviews

Apr 13, 2025

Charming and heartfelt, this voyage through India is a wonderful trip. And it has an incredible soundtrack.

Anderson's craft is undeniable, but this is one of his only films that left me feeling hollow and unmoved. It's as if his characters were merely passing through the narrative, rather than emotionally driving it by their actions.

While the film retains Anderson’s signature deadpan humor and eccentricity, it also delves into more poignant themes. The brothers’ strained relationship is explored through a series of beautifully understated moments, underscored by an evocative soundtrack that blends Indian classics with Anderson’s trademark retro vibe.

I feel like I say the same thing about every Wes Anderson (and also the same as everyone) but - beautiful shots, beautiful warm golden hues, perfect music, moving yet funny story. Like a train, (ok not all trains but SOME), it moves tranquilly and while it doesn’t rush, before you know it you’re at the destination :-).

The Darjeeling Limited may be far from Anderson's best, but it's still definitely a great film. The cinematography is just stunning, it's one of Robert Yeoman's best jobs in my opinion. And I can appreciate how it's one of Anderson's more emotional stories and leaves a lot more to the imagination than his other films. Led by a great cast and setting, The Darjeeling Limited was an enjoyable watch.

I immediately fell head over heels in love with this movie, another whimsical oddity from the king of whimsical oddities, Wes Anderson. This is one strange, peculiar little movie, and I imagine many who watch this aren't going to be able to make heads or tails of it. But I was transfixed from the opening moments and not only fascinated with the relationships between the oddball brothers but pretty much mesmerized by the eccentric cinematography, production design and costumes. This is a movie of moments, of little scenes that stick in your mind and even single shots that are so peculiar they can't help but tickle your fancy. All three leads are in close to every scene of this movie, and they carry it off admirably and with aplomb. Anderson regular Anjelica Huston has a couple nice scenes at the end, and keep your eyes open for a couple amusing cameos, one very fleeting toward the end. THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS remains my favorite Anderson movie, but this one is right up there.

I watched this on DVD recently. It's an odd film which I really do not want to like, and I now regret spending the time watching it, however, strangely I also enjoyed it as an experience. It annoyed me right from the off when I found it had an introduction packaged in a separate short film called 'Hotel Chevalier' which I felt obliged to watch along with it's end credits! It made no sense to me at all, except setting an atmosphere of eccentricity. Moving on to the main feature, it became a little more palatable for a while. The characters were introduced, and the train journey across India began. The film is bright and the cinamatography is appealing, as are the characters and I liked the train chase cameo. The story on the other hand is a mixed affair, which I found to be deliberately peculiar. It maintained my interest without ever arriving anywhere which I found very frustrating. I feel manipulated in a sort of friendly way, so I do recommend the film, just.

Lots if lighthearted fun but on the great plane up in the sky where Wes Anderson steals the dreams of angels and the odd devil's tail, too!

From writer-director Wes Anderson comes a story of 3 brothers going on a life-changing adventure with a supporting cast of Angelica Houston, Natalie Portman, the late Irrfran Khan and Bill Murray The main trio consists of Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman, and Owen Wilson playing Jack, Peter, and Francis They haven't spoken in a year since their fathers funeral and they happen to bump into each other while in India On a train they each decide to explore the country's vast locales and soak up its richness while looking for their mother The movie is rich and vibrant with its colors and stunning palettes The characters are kinda tough to identify with and it's not one of Anderson's finest works A lot of the supporting cast feels wasted in here too But it's genuinely lovely to watch and it's a nice simple journey of self healing and discovery to heal all kinds of wounds physical or spiritual These three brothers love each other but always show it in the not so friendliest manner Like us they have a lot to work on

A very simple story helped by an amazing visual flare. Amazing and structured visual is what you can expect from Wes Anderson, but this movie feels more colorful and raw thanks to the Indian scenery. The three characters are full of personality, and they are very fun to follow, even if they don't have much to do. The actors are very charismatic and finds a good way to turn what look like awful people to hilarious klutz and to give them some depth when necessary. When the backstory started to unfold, I was surprised that it was a movie about loss, about how it is to lose a parent even as an adult but going back to what seemed like some random dialogue and scenes made a lot of sense.

A Wes Anderson movie, so of course it's quirky, but also utterly charming and wonderfully paced, bittersweet road movie set in India. 3 great actors play off each other and secondary characters get sufficient moments in the limelight.
