Dark Harvest Reviews

A bold and unsettling new nightmare

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Nov 17, 2024

Despite some fleeting moments of pulpy-horror, Dark Harvest feels like a missed opportunity to create something that could have been cherished for Octobers to come.

It wouldn’t have been that big of a problem if the other performances had balanced things out, but it saddens me to report that none of the actors give any noteworthy turns here...

| Original Score: C+ | Mar 6, 2024

Gory delights and a wickedly cool, squash-headed creature are tasty treats that make up for the clunkiness elsewhere meaning it’s a film worth giving a spin to this spooky season.

It might be worth catching up on the novel by Norman Partridge that this horror movie is based on to fill in some blanks, since whatever ended up on screen is total nonsense.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Jan 12, 2024

If a horror movie is only as good as its monster, Sawtooth Jack lives up to expectations. Like Frankenstein’s monster, he’s hideous, but also weirdly poignant in his hideousness. This is solid Halloween fare.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Nov 3, 2023

...a familiar yet workable premise that’s employed to often shockingly tiresome effect...

| Original Score: .5/4 | Oct 27, 2023

It’s a very well-shot film, with several well-staged sequences in terms of how a proper director can make a lot from a little. Plus, I do tend to enjoy horror films actually set around Halloween.

| Original Score: 6/10 | Oct 25, 2023

Dark Harvest might trip on itself at times, but it’s still a satisfyingly spooky seasonal offering from Slade.

Dark Harvest is one of those movies destined to have an instant cult following and to become an obligatory viewing during Halloween movie marathons... [Full review in Spanish]

Visually clever and directed with giddy, B-movie ferociousness by Hard Candy and 30 Days of Night impresario David Slade, this slick slice of blood-splattered Halloween carnage is worth knocking on doors to see.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Oct 19, 2023

[Dark Harvest]...is a stellar adaptation that understands the themes and the subtext behind Norman Partridge’s novel and realizes its potential in gory bursts of violence.

Dark Harvest fails to camouflage its modesty of normality and production terms, leaving us in a lower ranking than Slade's previous works. [Full review in Spanish]

I can definitely see myself putting this on my annual permanent Halloween movie rotation.

'Dark Harvest' has genuine scares, along with lots of charm and heart. It's a fun movie that packs a lot of punch both with the thrills and themes explored.

| Original Score: B | Oct 15, 2023

Stylish and atmospheric, this thriller with a throwback vibe is mildly unsettling but rarely terrifying.

| Oct 14, 2023

Slade's film isn’t too grave about leaving a lasting effect, but it does not take itself seriously enough.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Oct 13, 2023

Yields a bloody good time.

| Original Score: B | Oct 13, 2023

All in all: I had fun. Slade is going super dark, but also super corny with the period flair. Think a horror riff on GREASE with Partridge's Bram Stoker Award-winning plot as its scaffolding.

| Original Score: 6/10 | Oct 13, 2023

A visually stunning and often surprising work, there are certainly worse movies than Dark Harvest to check out during spooky season.
