The Day After Tomorrow Reviews

Mar 24, 2025

More entertaining than it has any right to be, but, like all Roland Emmerich disaster flicks, it's best to stop watching after the second act.

This movie is chef's kiss! The very best of environmental apocalypse, human relationships, cause/effect + hope. Disregard the bad CG wolves, the rest is a perfect marriage of tension/social justice/environmental justice/love stories/future possibilities. Press "play" any time you see it available!

The day after tomorrow is good but there is some issues I noticed. the ending felt rushed but the effects were amazing for 2004. Boat scene added nothing to the polt and everything good happens at the mid point tornados and a flood. in conclusion a good disaster movie but bad ending

Highly underrated. Great special effects, story is not unbelievable, some great actors. Perfect disaster movie.

Pay attention all you film fans this is movie is a life lesson on climate change it presents it with realism and courage and it does well combining it with an unpredictable plot of Dennis quaid and others wanting to help survive and/or evacuate the ice age era and it interesting how Jake gyllenhall a great actor he is is with friends caught in the disaster. Don’t be deceived by the errors in science because as long as there is involving drama/ dramatic tension and suspense just like in that of a Hitchcock movie then this movie is not predictable and that it sparks 🧨 your interest and attention after all it’s not like some typical mindless blockbuster it had intelligence such as the charachters being serious and the acting as mature. And where the interactions between these charachters are compelling and have development and motivations you get invested in how gyllenhall has a relationship with his father and they reconcile as well as the plot line of him and Emmy Rossum ( she was also in that awful remake Poseidon and she is way better here and making a better teen love interest here with gyllenhall than whoever she was in love with in that awful remake. ) this is a perfect movie to watch on a snowy stormy day in winter and this film should be shown in schools during science classes on climate change emmerich is like the real school teacher here. It’s thought provoking with it musical score and scenes that happen in the film. Emmerich is a True filmmaking god hope he wins an Oscar one day. And they say this or 2012 are the mother of disaster movies and i agree as a result how can it be bad when it is the ultimate disaster movie as it’s not an ordinary one because of how it happened around the world everywhere it’s more of an apocalypse disaster. We have enough human emotion here along with hearfelt moments towards the end like that father and son reunion this is a really good movie and emmerich should be proud of himself I would easily give this a perfect ten if it weren’t for the science errors like the climate change happening fast but outside of that this film needs love and praise for its suspense, drama, plot, and tension it has along with emotion and human touch it’s an absolute must see for those reasons ⛈️🌊❄️🌨️🌎

people who are looking for a great story and characters, this movie is not for you. But, if you like intense sequences that leave you on the edge of your seat, you will love this movie.

This 2004 movie blows new ones away. So entertaining and thought-provoking. Have seen it countless times. People piss and moan about holes in the science? Are you kidding me? It’s a movie! Would love to see the brilliant work these “savvy critics” produce. Oh, that’s right… they have none.

Worth a watch during a snow day. There are several holes in the plot but intense and entertaining!

The Day After Tomorrow - 7.5/10. What Roland Emmerich does a great job with his big budget films is entertain with gargantuan set pieces of world shifting events. The Day After Tomorrow plays with the idea of global warming, and flips it to global cooling. The visuals and CGI are outstanding. The whole tsunami sequence and then subsequent freezing scenes are just spectacular to watch even today. The acting is a little shoddy, with decent performances from Dennis Quaid and Sela Ward. Otherwise the film is really just a special effects extravaganza geared towards making a statement against global warming. As a film, its super entertaining as a disaster movie. As a movie on critiquing a serious issue like global warming and pollution, the film lacks a little. Its commendable that Emmerich has tried to make a disaster film tied into a more serious issue. But the movie works mainly as a fun watch and if you just watch it that way, you will totally enjoy it!

Easily one of Roland emmerich’s best movies besides Independence Day and the patriot the man sure knows how to make a great disaster film and he makes a one that has a message on global warming and the possibility of the north becoming an ice age, it’s not just that the CGI is astonishing but the storytelling is strong, the plot is original it was very interesting a scientist doesn’t get along with his son who goes out with friends and they get caught in the weather. Science aside this is a great disaster film with solid dialogue, excellent performances, terrific screenplay and convincing and real looking disaster scenes especially that tsunami wave in New York. Emmerich did a great job making this movie and it’s one of the best of 2004 I give it a solid A don’t know how anyone can dislike it it’s a heartwarming and soulful film with emotion, likeable and relatable charachters. It’s a wonderful film that deserves more praise than given It’s a thumbs up 👍👍👍👍👍

Unique and gripping! I hadn't seen a film similar to this before, so I thought this was great to watch. Great acting and very good effects. Will watch this again and again.

This is one of my all time favorite movies!

I watch this A LOT. I've always enjoyed it, and I still do. It's an unrealistic doomsday movie, bringing together all kinds of exaggerations of the climate change issues, and how the world's weather wreaks revenge on mankind and rebalances the scales. Overstated, exaggerated, and CGI'ed to within an inch of its life, but it works

Quite silly, and frankly exaggerates the climate change issue for sensationalism.

I enjoyed the overarching plot and the disaster elements of the film (which thankfully were the main element) which were supported by great visuals that hold up even to this day- maybe except the wolves. Speaking of the wolves, the various sub-plots of the movie lost me a bit. So many were introduced and then never expanded on, which isn't surprising considering how mamy characters there are. You have Tom, Sam, Lucy, Brian, JD, the girl Sam likes, the three English scientists, the two guys in space, the librarian, the girl who has a cousin in memphis, the guy who wants to preserve the Bible, the female researcher, Tom's two sidekicks, the President and Vice President, the kid with cancer- as you can see there are an insane amount of characters. Some of them are presented to us as important and then are swiftly dropped, or their character's motivations never expanded on. For example, JD is set up as a rival love interest who wants to leave his apartment to save his little brother. His feeling's for the girl (I can't even remember her name because she doesn't do anything) are non-existent by the middle of the film as is his concern for his brother. He ended up a non-factor in the movie except for when he gets bit by a wolf to kick off a tense action sequence that wasn't tense at all because why on earth are a pack of wolves antagonists in this disaster film. Another problem with the sheer amount of characters with speaking roles is that the acting kind of sucks at times. The main characters are all acted well but some of the side characters' line delivery made me actually laugh, like the zookeper who said that the wolves had escaped. But, Tom and Sam are both believable characters with a relatable and easy to understand dynamic. I did enjoy this film though: if you watch it for the disaster elements and not the relationship dramas then you'll definitely enjoy it. I saw a lot of people saying this was some leftist climate change propoganda and I am aatounded that people lack common sense so much to think climate change is not real. I can't imagine how much cool media you would miss out on if you think every film, song, and book is part of some communist conspiracy.
