Dead Ringers Reviews
A pretty good and interesting film that puts most of it's weight on Jeremy Irons's shoulders, and he definitely delivers with an amazing duel performance. Though it doesn't have all too much else going for it, and it doesn't have any signature Cronenberg gore, Irons's performance and the dynamic between the brothers are enough to make this a good film.
One have the most miserable movie-watching experiences of my life. Hardly a ‘psychological thriller’ as it claims to be, but rather a wildly depressing descent into toxic relationships, drug addiction, and tragic, lonely death. Not a single likable character or enjoyable moment. The intriguing premise turns out to be a savage betrayal. Avoid this thoroughly unpleasant movie at all costs, even if the performances are excellent.
🎃 Jeremy Irons, savoring the bouquet of the glass of red wine in his hand: "Are you late with your period?" 🍷 Brilliant performance in a tragic and haunting tale.
Idk if this was supposed to be hilarious, but it was to me. Very enjoyable to watch if you have a twisted sense of humor. Prolly not so much if you don’t. Watch with caution lol
Dead Ringers is an original, disturbing, and compelling film with philosophical depth. It rightfully earns its status as a classic in the horror genre!
Jeremy Irons does a superb job of playing identical twins. However, WARNING: DEAD RINGERS is real life horror with no redeeming features. It's a seriously twisted story of extremely dark madness and is very cold and uncomfortable to watch. After it ends, that coldness and discomfort will definitely be hard to shake.
Dead Ringers may have a plot that meanders broadly with its storyline, but it's nevertheless a unique and intriguing concept. While it's more of a thriller than a horror, Cronenberg manages to tap into his body horror credentials with a few choice scenes. Even with a storyline that could be more focused, I would definitely watch this again.
The movie lacks Cronenberg's typically grotesque violence and yet it may be his most disturbing work. The reasons for this are obvious but it's impressive how Cronenberg can still terrify you with mere ideas and implications. Iron's performances here are unbelievable.
Irons makes the difference between normal, predictable and a brilliance.
One of the more twisted but unique movies that I had ever seen.
This is a creepy movie set in Toronto about two twins who share a career in gynecology, an apartment, and sexual conquests, among other things. The one thing I did love about the film was Jeremy Irons - he performs as two different people, and his performance (his performances?) really do get across the two different characters in a really phenomenal way. While at times you get mixed up about which is which, overall, he uses his acting to distinguish them and present two separate people. It's really amazing.
This is utterly woeful. It started out well & then dove into a crazy, pretentious piece of nonsense. I also do not believe the audience rating and if the critics liked it, I would presume this site has become pay to play like everything else.
I walked out. Disgusting and sick. A gruesome movie about deranged twin gynecologists. That they are remaking this is truly bizarre. The good reviews must be people thinking it's some kind of badge of honor to handle this level of sadistic grossness.High art? Yeah, right. Might as well watch a snuff film.
I became dehydrated by the time I'd finished this film. Anyone who's seen it will know what I mean. Beautiful double performance by Jeremy Irons and Geneviève Bujold. Not really a feel good movie, but a film that had deeply affected me by the closing credits. David Cronenberg's best, as far as I'm concerned.
Jeremy Irons did smart job here playing the identical twins. The story is unsettling and disturbing, not horrifying, well tailored by Cronenberg. Not aged badly in my view.
Superb psychological thriller thanks to Jeremy Irons's brilliant lead performance along with Cronenberg's atmospheric direction. This is truly Irons's show, playing the Mantle brothers to perfection, using subtle changes in his performance to show the differences, with Elliot being the more suave, outgoing one while Beverly is more intelligent yet timid. At sight, you can tell them apart without any make up or clothing tricks and seeing both fall apart is tragic and terrifying. Behind the camera, Cronenberg creates one of his more cerebral thrillers, focusing on the dependence two brothers have on one another (to the point they share lovers) and can not live without the other. He also throws in his trademark, creepy flair (the surgery scene is text book Cronenberg). All in all, one of his most disturbing films along with one of Irons's best performances.
What all other reviews fail to mention is that the film is based on a true story and its Cronenbergian deviations don't stray too far from the truth, but rather play with and highlight the conclusions drawn by the media and public at the time, and further extrapolate the complex psychological interactions which go beyond the regular assumptions about twins. The fact that Cronenberg injects his own inner struggles via idiosyncratic side plots and cinematic devices, at first felt like the annoying person at the dinner table making every subject of conversation turn to being about them, but, upon reflection, they make perfect sense as the route for which those of us born without a sibling alongside us in the womb can understand the real events that unfolded for these twins; not as with someone 'other' but as the very same struggle we all have within and between ourselves.
I want to know how this gets such praise on here. Really? Cannot recommend. Most people would be bored and consider it a complete waste of time.
Much like A History Of Violence or Eastern Promises, Dead Ringers, for the most part, doesn't feel like an archetypal David Cronenberg film. Very little violence, little gore and only a smattering of body horror, it's a film that focuses far more on the psychological than the physical. Jeremy Irons pulls double duty as a pair of identical twin gynaecologists whose seemingly unbreakable bond becomes fractured through a series of traumatic events. The film's clever camerawork and actor positioning helps sell the illusion that there really are 2 Jeremys on screen, and Irons himself is talented enough to pull off such a challenging task. He gives the brothers distinct personality traits and features while also playing them as essentially the same person. It examines how 2 individuals who are close to the point of being almost, ahem, identical, can go down 2 completely separate paths, brought on by their own flaws and insecurities. It's deliberately confusing in that you often have trouble telling the 2 men apart, and this makes the story all the more compelling. I felt that the pacing flagged towards the end, when the initiable comedown approaches and the film takes its time in wrapping things up. But overall, it's a smart, brilliantly acted, emotionally fraught story of familial relationships. Not my favourite Cronenberg flick, but definitely one of his most acclaimed. See it for yourself and see what you think.
