Dear White People Reviews
It was okay but I'd probably never want to watch it again. Watch if there's nothing else better on.
Good idea, terrible delivery. This movie takes boring to new levels.
More racist trash. Show creator Justin Simien is a Black Supremist race grifter, he does not care about uplifting or inspiring black Americans, he only cares about making money for himself by exploiting the plight of the black American by deliberately creating a show to profit off of current racial divisions.
I recently watched the movie Dear White People, and it was one of the most disappointing movies I've seen in a while. The film had a great premise, with fascinating characters, and the potential to explore some deep topics on identity, race, and racism. However, it lacked any real depth or complexity to the ideas it was tackling, and I found the movie often times trying too hard to be funny. The movie also had some issues with pacing and dialogue. It often felt like the characters were speaking in long, lagging monologues that felt more didactic than natural in how they were delivered. Furthermore, the movie tried to hammer home the importance of racism and discrimination by having every single character (even the white characters) constantly talking about it. This forced dialogue felt clumsy, and it seemed like the movie's attempt to be "woke" actually caused it to become preachy and heavy-handed. The movie also had a lack of cohesiveness in its plot. It felt like there was no real narrative arc, and most of the characters seemed to have no real purpose in the story. Even the central character Sam, who was the one we were supposed to be invested in the most, felt like his story was never really developed. In the end, I was very disappointed with Dear White People. The movie had a great premise and could have had a lot of potential to explore interesting topics, but was bogged down by its muddled story, awkward dialogue, and a lack of development in its characters. Unfortunately, I give this movie only 1 star.
Contrary to what the title might suggest, Dear White People has no political axe to grind. Forget the ostensible motif of race politics and race relations. The true focus is on inter-personal human relations (boy girl, father son, peer relations) which are way more complicated, interesting and mysterious. The genius of this movie is how well it captures that complexity. Clever provacative dialogue is delivered by appealing, talented players. No racial platitutude, cliche or trope is left unexamined or unskewered. The good writing is complemented by excellent shooting. A simple scene at the end where a couple rehash what went wrong and make up is so well done that it might be the highlight of the story. There's a surprise punch line scene that ends it all. I finished this movie with both eyes open which is my equivalent of two thumbs up.
This goes without saying, it was bigoted from the outset. the odd chuckles it provides are far outweighed by the racial tension it works up in its audiences.
I’m just here for the comment section… These 1 star reviews seem very upset, makes you wonder why…
This was quite an interesting film from so many standpoints. Of course, racism, and hopefully it opened some eyes & hearts. But being true to yourself was as much of the theme as racism. More difficult for black people, yes. After the dark humor of the plot, I was surprised & delighted with the very funny special features. (I rented the DVD). "The more you know (about black people)" & "racism insurance" had me laughing out loud!
Dear Everyone... Don't watch this trash as it's painfully boring. The dialog and characters were unrealistic, and the acting was pitifully forced. It's something I would expect from a high school drama department. This movie tries to combine intellectualism with the current day woke agenda as is utterly absurd.
Its heart is in the right place and it has a few good moments, but overall was tedious to watch and not as clever or insightful as you'd hope for. I suspect a lot of the rave reviews are from people terrified of being called racist for not liking this—sort of like all the breathless Black Panther reviews we had to endure a few years ago. The movie was super condescending at points and seemed to be hammering away at race themes we've seen done better and with more finesse elsewhere. The most interesting characters are generally marginalized in some apparent rush to make a big point about race relations. I didn't hate the film, but I didn't love it as much as I'd expected. If it proves one thing, it's that the filmmaker can't write/direct realistic white characters... or black. Everyone is a caricature which is sad because the ideas behind them are creative and could have been so much more with better writing behind them. Overall, a miss.
Great movie about racial tension in post Obama era America. Should be mandatory viewing in every school.
If you enjoy hearing over-privileged students at elite colleges whine about micoraggressions, this is the movie for you.
Has some good performances but it's an overall drag, I was bored for most of the movies runtime. It tries to make some points but comes off very pretentious.
Incredibly unrealistic on every level. Most of the grittiness is channelled into characters' treatment of each other. Horrible rich white people and horrible rich black people. Great fashion though.
It is a shit-show which makes you think "now is when the story gets interesting" but would never happen. It begs you to stop watching it, and has no respect for the viewers.
