Death Becomes Her Reviews

The target of the movie's jokes is female vanity, but since Zemeckis exhibits not a trace of affection for the actresses (or for any of the men, either), one feels humiliated merely watching his crude-spirited wit.

This new horror-comedy has to be one of the most heartless mainstream pictures ever made.

| Jan 3, 2019

If there were something resembling genuine satire of human behavior beyond the simple pretexts for fancy special effects and relentless sadism, I might have found some of this funny.

| Jan 3, 2019

An elaborate piece of work with more than a little on its nasty mind, "Death" finally falls flatter than many a less ambitious film, proof once again that just because an idea is audacious doesn't necessarily mean it's good.

Meryl Streep shines in a glitzy black comedy, but it's still She-Devil with a make-over.

| Jan 3, 2019

Insistently grotesque, relentlessly misanthropic and spectacularly tasteless, ''Death Becomes Her'' isn't a film designed to win the hearts of the mass moviegoing public. But it is diabolically inventive and very, very funny.

| Jan 3, 2019

The effects are awesome, if occasionally too gruesome to enjoy. All in all, however, Death Becomes Her is clever, different and dementedly entertaining, while commenting on our unhealthy obsession with youth and beauty.

Zemeckis has always relished technical challenges; once again he pulls them off with high style.

| Feb 9, 2018

At the film's peak, Zemeckis, the cast, and the special-effects team achieve a deluxe, macabre slapstick.

| Oct 8, 2015

The trouble with Death Becomes Her isn't that its comic vision is too dark but that it has no shadings, no acerbic glee.

| Original Score: C+ | Sep 7, 2011

Mordant, daring, and way, way out there, "Death Becomes Her" is a very dark comedy that yields far more strange fascination than outright laughs.

| Mar 26, 2009

Far from sophisticated in its satire of narcissism, but enormous fun.

| Jan 26, 2006

Although the familiar jauntiness and energy of Mr. Zemeckis's direction are always there, the viewer has too many occasions to wonder why those fine qualities aren't somewhere else.

| May 20, 2003

[Zemeckis] seems unsure which genre he is sending up, but the leads sink their teeth into it with obvious enthusiasm.

| May 12, 2001

Zemeckis, who took us "Back to the Future" thrice, directs this technically complicated, stylishly imaginative extravaganza with the sure hand of Dr. Menville before he got into Scotch.

| Jan 1, 2000

It's a clumsy but nonetheless amusing satire on the desperation of the beauty obsessed movie industry.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 1, 2000

Both leading ladies display great willingness to send up themselves and Hollywood, and Willis' quiet nervous breakdown showcases his previously unguessed-at comic skills.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 1, 2000

In the self-obsessed world of Death Becomes Her, a world not too far removed from the real one, living well is not the best revenge, but a nip and a tuck may be.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Jan 1, 2000

If the pleasure doesn't last long after the movie, it's more than enjoyable during.
