Death Wish Reviews
Bronson is a brilliant actor and the story is interesting but not executed well enough to its full potential. The movie’s abrupt ending is anticlimactic.
Love the movie it has an interesting story and very entertaining.
It’s not a bad movie for its time, but does not hold up at all. It’s truly baffling that critics certify this film with 66%, but the remake(which is 10x better) gets a 16%. What movie did they watch? I’m truly curious. The remake had a better pace, better acting, better effects. Literally everything is better in the remake.
Part melodrama, part detective story, part vigilante-thriller, all perfectly executed. Features both the awesome action and the very realistic social satire, alongside enough motivation and character development, with of course a special highlight for Bronson's amazing performance as Paul Kersey, for those who crave their action movies with a little more brains.
A film can often be a victim of circumstance, but it can also benefit from it too, and that would appear to be the case with Michael Winner’s Death Wish. At the time, America was experiencing a spike in violent crimes, something which convinced cinematic legend Stanley Kubrick to flee the county and never return. As a result, a film about a vigilante taking out thugs left and right with little to no consequences was incredibly appealing, with many audience members who had been wronged by criminals or failed by the police wishing they could do the same thing. I suppose you could argue that the film glorifies the concept vigilantism, but it does more to push back on it than your average lone gunman flick. The problem I noticed is that our lead, Paul Kersey, doesn’t really decline into vigilantism, he simply tries it once and falls in love with the idea, which gives the impression that killing is something he’s developed a taste for, and muggers and punks are the easiest and most convenient target because they’re absolutely everywhere. He goes for a quiet stroll at night and they appear from every street corner. But what the film handles so well is its character development. We see a lot of his interactions with his family and colleagues, and witness how his situation has affected his mental state. It’s clear that he’s getting a kick out of what he’s doing, but the film even slyly acknowledges that most people would. It’s exposing an ugly reality of human nature, and while its not an outright condemnation of vigilantism, it’s not a wholesale endorsement of it either. Bronson has had many roles throughout his career, but that of Paul Kersey might be his most iconic, and there’s a very good reason for that.
Charles Bronson at his finest!
Cine cult. The relentless well directed and scripted film.
The beginning of an increasingly ludicrous franchise and clones. This actually takes its time with the story and the characters plus the theme of vigilanteism
Another great classic. Very well-done film but I can't say the same for the sequels which are pretty pathetic.
Death Wish is like a spaghetti western set in New York city during the tumultuous ‘70’s. Charles Bronson plays a man whose wife and daughter have been brutally assaulted by a group of depraved thugs, upending his life entirely. With a lack of any real recourse, Bronson decides to turn to vigilantism and becomes a cult hero of sorts to the victimized citizens of the city. Death Wish is obviously controversial. It is a reflection of the overall sense of helplessness that New Yorkers felt during the ‘70’s in the face of out of control crime. That issue aside, Death Wish is at times effective due to Charles Bronson’s steely performance, but it's not entirely successful as a complete film.
The hit film of summer 74. Brendon is excellent in this mildly silly social/political plot but it was fast paced, frenetic and darkly fun. Bought and watched on DVD.
Despite being frightening, the film's darkness and message are potent, unsettling, and optimistic. The movie is thrilling, dark, terrifying, and entertaining. Charles Bronson gives a performance that will be remembered.
"Death Wish" had the potential for an intense revenge thriller, but it falls short of its mark, earning a lukewarm 3-star rating from me. Charles Bronson's performance was decent, yet he struggled to convince in the emotional moments, leaving a gap in the film's impact. The story suffers from unnecessary subplots, diluting the main narrative, and the pacing is as erratic as a rollercoaster ride. While I anticipated a violent and gritty experience, the film veered more towards a psychological drama, taking an unexpected turn. It's a mixed bag that leaves you wanting more action and intensity. Despite its flaws, "Death Wish" manages to hold your attention, thanks to Bronson's presence, but it fails to deliver the adrenaline-pumping revenge flick it promised to be. P.s. i love you Jeff Goldblum!!
Boy they made a lot of sequels, but as usual the original is the best. I just rewatched this and enjoyed it; it holds up pretty well some 50 years later. (It's also interesting to see how the police cracked cases pre-DNA and ubiquitous security cameras; spoiler alert - they had to work harder!)
It's a Solid Flick and a Bronsan Classic. The music is really good and the best part with a funky soundtrack that I wish was used just a bit more. Besides that everything about it is good. Well acted with little dialouge, though there could be more supporting cast and the villians really are cannon fodder more than anything. Bronsan is likeable and has great prescene while never seeming like a psychopath and you understand why he's doing this. The action is well done and while this defintely is exploitation it has a lot of substance to it and plenty of underlying commentary about crime and vigilantism good and bad. It's well shot and the gritty NYC setting is distinct and fits the tone perfectly. The only other issue is it can feel like in the second half there isn't much of a climax and kills sort of just happen though there is a flow enough to the events and it does work. It defintely could've used more supporting cast and a bit more tension/buildup payoff. Otherwise its a smart crime/action movie and anyone who is a fan of any actors in this, the director, or crime action should check out.
Death Wish is a gritty violent revenge action thriller movie and Charles Bronson is really great action star vigilante the story was good but it didn't focus on getting revenge of murdering he's wife and he's daughter who got rape and there's no justice but at least I had fun watching this grindhouse 42nd street vibe.
A very realistic portrayal of a simple man being pushed into the madness of taking the law into his own hands to enact justice in the city of New York.
Vale apena assistir? Para quem é fã de Bronson. Nota: 5
We need more movies like Death Wish. Perfection.
Great movie..........
