Desperados Reviews

Mar 11, 2024

I liked this movie, it's so funny and this movie is good. ( I Just don't like the main character like wtf is wrong with you, you just met that guy and you're so selfish. You literally have a perfect two bestfriends).

I liked the cast but it wasn't enough.

Rom coms are supposed to be dumb, but this is just ridiculous. The female lead is just awful, and why anyone would want to be with her is beyond me. The make lead was ok as in his personality wasn't repellent... but the fact that he wanted to be with her made him a worse human being.

There are some smiles in this comedy about a woman trying to find love but too many flaws to get past. This is trying too hard to be Bridesmaids and and The Hangover, but never coming close. The cast is actually pretty good but the laughs are cheap and predictable and that is the biggest issue. This one is not original or that funny. Summary: Doesn't Hit The Mark

The first movie that made me laugh out loud in a long time.. yes themes were problematic, but I enjoyed the cast and it cheered me up on a grey day.

#5 in U.S. On Netflix when I watched it. Not all that great. The relationship brokenness and desperation was a bit over the top and more pathetic than funny. The feeble attempts at genuineness seemed contrived and just put in for an attempt at balance. A bit formulaic.

A cute rom-com that will make you smile and laugh, and we all need that now. This is nothing we all haven't seen before, but during these pandemic times, sitting back, relaxing and allowing our brain to mellow, is just what the doctor ordered. Add some friends, weed and alcohol, and it's a better time. The casting and performances were decent, although some of the actors tried too hard in certain scenes to the point it felt forced. Although the pacing was decent, the 105 min runtime felt longer. Some editing/cutting would've gone a long way. The story was pretty much infantile, with some cringeworthy jokes that didn't work, but the ones that did, you will howl in laughter. Yes, it is predictable, but with the nice Mexican landscape and some off the wall comedy, it's a good mental break. It certainly is underserving of all the 1/10 by the wannabe critics. It's a generous 6/10 from me.

Yes, this movie was bad but Nasim Pedrad was pretty in it and I think that's what really matters at the end of the day.

It had potential, but the potential wasn't met.

Predictable not at all funny and trivial. Tries so hard to make sex jokes but fails completely; also kind of sexist.

If I can convince just one other person to not watch this movie then I have done my job. I literally created a RT account just to write this review. Ostensibly, this is a comedy, but it feels like absolute torture. A reminder of the depths of pain that a movie can bring upon you. My wife and I only completed the movie due to a drunken promise to each other that we would make it through no matter what and it took several weeks in 5 min increments for us to do so. The main issue with this film (oh where to start!) lies with the characters. I can forgive the flat, lifeless, dated, borderline offensive jokes if we see compelling characters in situations where we can give a single damn about what happens to them. It seems like the writers were trying to stuff these people into standard trope archetypes for movies like this (the wacky best friend! the 'normal' one who is the sounding board! the flawed protagonist who ultimately realizes to love herself! the friend who ultimately becomes the romantic interest!) but gets every single element wrong. The writing has made these people so unlikable that I found myself clenching my fists in an unconscious fight-or-flight mode half the time I was watching. The cast has no chemistry with each other and are just going through the motions to get the paycheck. Everyone literally looks sleepy. That combined with the terrible writing gives the entire production an 'off' feeling that made me nauseous at times. If at end of the movie everyone pulled their skin off to reveal alien bodies in some sort of David Lynch fever dream that would make more sense. It hurts to see this movie was written by a woman as well as it posits a world where female bonds are centered around their supporting terrible, morally and legally corrupt decision making, and selfish motives regardless of the consequences. Suspension of disbelief works for gags in movies like this when the audience gets on board the train and wants to see where it goes even if enters in hard to believe territory. This movie is the equivalent of a dirty, run down subway in the middle of the summer where a homeless man has urinated all over himself and the AC is broken. You try to suppress your gag reflex but I am warning you now to stay away. Each 'scene' is a predictable setup of lame one-liners, 'wacky' antics, and ill-conceived and poorly executed gags. I'll say it now: if you like this movie, you are a stupid and bad person. If you think punchlines of someone getting hit in the nuts and then says things like "Ow my nuts" are funny then I don't know what more to say to you. Nasim Pedrad also gets sexually accosted by a dolphin. That sentence is funnier than what is shown in the movie. It also just looks bad; like a random New Girl episode directed by a first timer. Flat, lifeless. Kind of makes you hate your own television. Heather Graham looks great for her age though.

Desperados is a comedy that seemingly forgot to add in jokes that make people laugh. I normally like Nasim Pedro but I found her to be fairly annoying here. I don’t think that’s her fault though. The writing is just terrible. The premise is so dumb, and the film doesn’t add anything that can offset that. I didn’t laugh once here. Every single joke fell flat. I just found myself bored and rolling my eyes the entire time. Overall, this is horrendous. Nearly every aspect of this film is terrible. This is a sorry excuse of a film, and I can’t wait to never think about this again.

It was a fun waste of time. That's what these types of films are supposed to be.

Desperados is a watchable film but pretty much by the book love story that ends very predictable. The girls here have OK chemistry but the film tries to be like an R-rated bridesmaids and fall short. The jokes mostly don’t work and the story drags along. As it is it’s a romcom that fails to deliver many jokes and falls into the trap of predictability

Normally I only leave reviews when I loved something, but I honestly regret spending the time watching this. I hovered between, "Oof, that was rotten" and "meh, it passed the time." I was trying to be nice, but damn. This movie was like a full body cringe from beginning to end. It just tried wayyy too hard. I sincerely struggled to finish it. At one point I was like, howww much longerrr and I checked... More than an hour left. Hating my movie choice I continued. Checked again with 40 minutes left and thought, well I'm too invested now, I have to finish it. I did. I should have turned it off the first time I checked. The plot sounded ok but to be honest I think the main character just killed it. She was super unlikable. They were obviously going for a Sandra Bullock vibe but it fell flat. But it just didn't have legs no matter who was cast really. If I could go back and skip this one I totally would. ~Happy movie watching.

LOVED IT! HATED IT! First, why I loved it: It's potential and of course, Lamorne Morris. He was Grrrreat!!! Not to mention after a tough work week, who wants to experience more drama and violence? This was just what the doctor ordered for light, mindless fun. A good de-stressor. The Heroine was cute, quirky, charming and very realistic. And, even though her two friends were in supporting roles, they had their own agendas, which made them interesting. Wesley marched to the beat of a different drummer. And, for a change, she was neither perfect nor a skank displaying her wares. There was no gratuitous nudity or sex. When Wesley appeared nude, it was unintended and suggested by the camera angle, which was just as effective. The movie is called "desperados" as was proven by Wesley's quest to undo a damaging email she sent to her boyfriend, even if it meant going all the way to Mexico to do so. The message in this movie was that to find true happiness and where you fit in, you start by accepting yourself not meeting someone else's expectations of you by trying to live up to fake image. Second, why I hated it: The message gets lost on the Sandra Bullock look alike. Sandra Bullock is directing films these days so she wasn't available and probably would not have done this movie at this point in her career. Yes, the cute, quirky, main character has had obvious plastic surgery!!!! The lips and nose especially. And, that was very distracting. And, not in a good way. The movie would have been so much better if they'd chosen an authentic actress with natural character in her face, who was less than perfect to play this role. This actress already had the personality, but it gets lost on the odd fake facial parts. TOO BAD!!! The dolphin scene didn't need to go there. It was fine as is without the tackiness added. And, calling the cat "Hitler" due to it's mustache. Why not call it "Chaplin?"
