Destroyer Reviews

It sounds like a rote rote cop [movie], but the way that Karyn Kusama puts a spin on it: [Destroyer] is really about a woman who cannot deal with her own mistakes... I thought that this film had a real heaviness to it.

A masterful performance by Kidman, who has proven over the last few years that she has deep reserves of talent.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Apr 21, 2019

[Kidman's] collaboration with Karyn Kusama, who directed this film, is another example of her willingness to back a filmmaker still to peak.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Mar 29, 2019

The film has to be seen for Kidman. In the scenes set in the present she has so transformed herself that at first she's hardly recognisable.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Mar 22, 2019

Bell lets her past eat her alive without taking the time to fully understand it-so we can't either. That is ultimately her, and the film's, downfall.

There's a clear thematic debt to such character-driven 1970s classics as Serpico or The French Connection, but Destroyer also feels profoundly contemporary in its flipping of traditional gender roles.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jan 27, 2019

This uneven and downbeat film will play to small audiences - but that it exists is kind of wonderful.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 25, 2019

Sadly, the film is too muddled, overly serious, and wholly implausible to fly.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 25, 2019

The film may be flawed and uneven but it provides a platform for its ever-versatile star to give one of her strongest and least characteristic performances.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 24, 2019

I don't know what absorbed more of my attention, the story, her character, or just how bad she looks. Actually, I can answer that. How bad she looks.

Destroyer's grim and grubby vision of Los Angeles is a decent enough cover version of the fractured metropolis iconised by Michael Mann in modern noir classics such as Heat and Collateral.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 24, 2019

Grunge feminism laid on with a shovel.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Jan 23, 2019

I have to say I found Kidman's performance superb: smart, committed, utterly absorbing.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jan 23, 2019

Directed by Karyn Kusama, it's a grim watch, which proves perversely compelling - up to a point.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Jan 23, 2019

A grim, dour dive into one LA cop's unravelling, which centres on a truly transformative performance from Nicole Kidman.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jan 22, 2019

Kidman is one of our great screen actresses, but here she destroys everything in her path.

| Original Score: D+ | Jan 18, 2019

In some respects, "Destroyer" plays like a movie that would ordinarily go straight to Showtime, and only a few things help it rise above that level to reach a state of mediocrity.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jan 18, 2019

If there's a powerful performance here, it's obscured by the ludicrous Kabuki mask of pain in which Kidman is outfitted.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Jan 16, 2019

This is one of those radical change-your-image performances that tries too hard to defy our expectations. Kidman has indeed proved in the past to be quite versatile, but this muddled, scabrous, neo-noir procedural does her no great favors.

| Original Score: C+ | Jan 11, 2019

An astonishing and haunting performance by Nicole Kidman... demonstrates she is the peak of her skills as an actor.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Jan 10, 2019
