The Devil's Advocate Reviews
Helped by some very snappy dialogue, Pacino makes The Devil's Advocate his own.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Aug 6, 2024
Devil's Advocate possesses such assets and problems that many will be divided in whether to applaud it for its witless audacity or chastise it for its contemptuous treatment of its audience.
| Original Score: 1.5/5 | Aug 6, 2024
Self-indulgent and overlong, it suffers largely due to Reeves having to carry the narrative momentum. Pacino is clearly having an absolute blast, but he seems to be in an entirely different movie from the rest of the cast.

Outrageously entertaining.
| Original Score: 3/4 | May 24, 2023
Although Pacino’s wily and delicious performance eventually leads to an over-the-top climax that threatens to derail the entire picture, The Devil’s Advocate develops patiently and effectively over 143 minutes.
| Original Score: 3/4 | May 4, 2023
It's circular and disjointed and over the top, but as a comedy it can be fun -- especially when we observe Pacino's rantings.

Despite the film trying to take itself seriously, I’ve laughed my ass off every time I’ve watched it over the years (25th anniversary)
| Original Score: 4/5 | Nov 8, 2022
At half its present length it might make an OK midnight camp item.
| Aug 10, 2020
A movie that sways unsteadily between a debate over good and evil and a half-successful attempt at black comedy.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 10, 2020
You don't care about any of the characters, so there's no fear of something nasty happening to them, and, with the exception of Pacino (who plays the devil himself), it's terribly miscast.
| Aug 10, 2020
Pacino's gleeful performance notwithstanding, "The Devil's Advocate" descends into silly self-indulgence when it should have gone straight to hell.
| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Aug 10, 2020
Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves attack their roles with gusto.

Critics called it out for its melodramatic tone, but the theatrics are far more feature than bug, and the participants seem just aware enough of the overheated material to wink without upending the whole apple cart.

Couldn't be more ridiculous.
| Original Score: C+ | Mar 21, 2017
Violence, sex, profanity dominate graphic temptation tale.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jul 12, 2016
Far too bland and mediocre to really pull off such heavy handed themes...
| Oct 17, 2012
You go in expecting a brazenly hokey, in-your-face portrait of evil, and that, I'm happy to say, is just what you get.
| Original Score: B | Sep 7, 2011
Stylishly seductive and well-acted by Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves, but thematically flawed, Taylor Hackford's film is yet another version of the Faustian morality tale.
| Original Score: B- | Jul 1, 2011
A fairly entertaining supernatural potboiler that finally bubbles over with a nearly operatic sense of absurdity and excess.
