Diana: The Musical Reviews

There are almost too many ill-conceived choices to count.

| Nov 19, 2021

Another version of the "Diana" story but this one is set to music.

| Original Score: 7/10 | Nov 12, 2021

A much too familiar map, after a year or so of high-profile media depictions of the princess (The Crown on Netflix, and the coming film Spencer), Diana: The Musical ranks as the lamest of them all.

| Nov 5, 2021

Not only is a recorded theatre musical not a movie, this travesty doesn't breathe any new life into the story, and the clangers stay with you long after the final credits

| Original Score: 1/5 | Oct 29, 2021

Diana: The Musical tries over and over again to give the show gravitas where it ought to just fully commit to whimsy.

| Oct 28, 2021

All of it is wearyingly familiar, and little of it is rendered with more than Lifetime movie-style cliché.

| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Oct 19, 2021

The royals continue to have a moment, and Netflix's streaming of this Broadway musical about Lady Di adds to the zeitgeist without breaking new territory.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 15, 2021

Diana takes such an insultingly surface approach to its complex fascinating subject that it feels like Bryan and DiPietro were grudgingly assigned it as a class project, and did most of their research on Wikipedia.

| Oct 15, 2021

Shallow, silly and profoundly simplistic [but it] affords a large public the chance to experience what only a few theatre buffs usually do-an actual Broadway disaster.

| Original Score: D- | Oct 14, 2021

Maybe the costumes can be praised but the lyrics, music, book, casting, staging is all laughably bad.

| Original Score: 1/10 | Oct 13, 2021

There are times where I couldn't help but wonder if the show would be better had all the actors just given into their inner drag queen.

| Oct 12, 2021

It's Diana: The Musical and it's two hours of 'whaaaaaat?' and pinching yourself that this is really happening. (After two hours I was black and blue, with the pinching).

| Oct 8, 2021

I do love a rhyming couplet, and in this respect it does not disappoint, unless you're Shakespeare.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Oct 8, 2021

If there is a silver lining to the over-sung, over-wrought, over-everything Diana: The Musical it is this: musical theatre has finally dished up something that makes the 2019 film version of Cats look like a masterpiece.

| Oct 7, 2021

It is kitsch on a scale that could only be truly appreciated by whoever runs the Pigeon Forge, Tennessee chamber of commerce. I truly could not believe what I was seeing.

| Oct 7, 2021

The cringe-inducing vulgarity of it all goes on and on. Merrily so, which is very odd, because Diana died an early death in a horrific car crash. Where's the fun in that?

| Oct 7, 2021

Shrill and frantic, "Diana" wasn't written by Andrew Lloyd Webber (the composers are David Bryan and Joe DiPietro) but the model seems to be Webber's "Evita."

| Oct 7, 2021

Who on this bloody Earth is this sodding show for? Uncynical Tarot readers? Sassy girl bosses? Ironic hipsters? The swear words give it away: Americans.

| Oct 6, 2021

A wildly crass retelling of a familiar story, a fat patty of pure schlock.

| Original Score: 1/5 | Oct 6, 2021

It's tolerable, I suppose, if you don't have to listen to it. Unfortunately it's a musical so you have to listen to it.

| Original Score: 1/4 | Oct 6, 2021
