Diana: The Musical Reviews
I loved it and was surprised to read some of the negative reviews. I'm not sure what some were expecting I thought the entire cast did a fabulous job portraying Diana's journey from kindergarten teacher to Princess to quickly becoming the most famous person in the world. I enjoy productions that entertain me (rather than depress me) and Diana: The Musical did not disappoint. If you're wanting a serious telling of the story you probably should skip it. But if you want an entertaining version of her life in the Royal family I think you'll enjoy it.
a BEAUTIFUL telling of the story of Diana, her legacy and a stark reminder that frankly our lives can be cut short at any moment, so we need to make ourselves better people to have the same impact of the late Diana. It truly serves as an inspiration for me to set an example to lead. I haven't even touched on the technical wonders that this show pulled off. And yes, while some argue it's "cheesy", I'd say it's just plainly witty and funny humor.
An insensitive, creatively bankrupt, and lyrically shallow musical that feels purely unfinished.
I remained baffled by the hate the critics gave this musical, and I'm thankful Netflix managed to get it recorded. I have to wonder how much lagging COVID-19 audiences prevented this musical from catching on to audience success in NYC. Similar to "Spencer," the critics seem to have an absolute resistance to depicting Diana as utterly human and flawed. Comparable to JFK, her early death has allowed a mythology to grow around Diana. However, it often prevents us from at looking at the complexities of the person.
So kitschy. In a so bad it's good way.
Is the musical cheesy? Yes, very much so. However, the songs, technical elements, and the cast are worth watching! From the intense choreography to the catchy music Diana is worth watching. It takes the audience through the life of Princess Diana while remaining true to the historical context. It is so crazy to watch this musical in 2023 now that Camilla is now the Queen.
Another attempt to dramatize Princess Diana's life, particularly the most boring and superficial of them. It's disappointing the way important storylines such as Di's childhood have been neglected and how the story is limited solely to the royal family and the history that everyone already knows.
Truly one of the worst things I've ever seen. I hated every second.
If you're not interested in seeing the musical at the theater, then you won't be interested in seeing this unnecessary filmed live performance that only furthered the disgraceful, cringingly humiliating exploitation when feeling more fictitious rather than honoring its subject being wrongfully captured in zoomed flaws carried by randomly meaningless numbers. Regarding a delivered platform that showcases who the princess is, it's best to stick towards the films away from this equivalent of Joey's dance from "Friends" with similar reaction only without laughing but just plain boredom. We love it. We watch it relatively often, at least once a month. It has great music, and as someone who wasn't alive in Diana's time, its a beautiful telling of the story.
Absolutely fantastic musical, the songs are great and comical, the acting superb and the story line accurate. I can't wait to watch this production on broadway as it was paused due to the Corona hysteria. Watched this on Netflix and it's amazing and definitely worth a watch
Unbelievably inept and tedious 'musical', so catastrophically misjudged it's a wonder it got past the first day's rehearsal. Everything about it is awful, so I'll just stop there.
Diana: The Musical was nothing more than a Hamilton wannabe film distributed by Netflix. It should also be noted that this film tried to cash in on the other Princess Diana film "Spencer" and the people behind this cash crab should be ashamed of themselves. The acting from Jeanna de Waal (Princess Diana), Roe Hartrampf (Princes Charles), Erin Davie (Camilla Parker Bowles), and Judy Kaye (Queen Elizabeth II and Barbara Cartland) was cheesy even for my taste. The musical numbers were not only forgettable but ridiculously lame as well. Diana: The Musical is clumsy, awkward, and foolish.
There were some very impressive quick changes, and a couple good lines, but ulitimatley the music, choreography, and story were just boring. Everything was very flat. Nothing seemed like it was very important to the story at all. Plus, the ending did not pay off at all. Boring musical.
A very unfortunate approach on one of the most iconic stories of the 20th century. The intentions seem to be good and the talent both behind and in front of the camera is solid but the basic concept is fundamentally flawed and the lead actress is very VERY miscast. She is a talented actress but this was not her role. Timing had been tragic, as well, sandwiched between considerably more accomplished Diana takes both on television (The Crown) and film (Spencer), the wildly unflattering comparisons were inevitable.
Not only is this an overplayed story, the lyrics are abysmal but with catchy tune. That doesn't justify it's existence, especially having come out the same week as Lin Manuel Miranda's tick, tick... BOOM! Here I was thinking a bad driver was the worst thing to happen to Princess Diana but nope, it was this.
This was the Broadway production, not the movie. My party and I LOVED the on stage performances of all actors. The choreography of the background paparazzi and Windsor staff was riveting...had great energy and was fun to watch/hear. The show itself revealed what most of us (of a certain age) already know but the presentation was outstanding. Jenna Da Waal captured the many experiences/moods of Princess Diana...we could "feel" her presence. A rating of 4.5 is more accurate...totally recommend it!!!
Yeah, the songs are quite catchy and Erin Davie as Camilla steals the show. But there's not much else. It's quite vapid and overwrought without even scratching the surface of what makes Diana such an interesting woman.
