Monkey Kingdom Reviews

Devotees of more objective Nature documentaries will suffer through a questionable soundtrack and a few moments of overemphasized slapstick, but the world represented here is undeniably stunning on a visual level, and certainly dramatic on its own terms.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Jun 21, 2022

“Monkey Kingdom” is a mix of IMAX nature flicks and virtually every “National Geographic” special. The photography is beyond impeccable and the narration by Tina Fey is at once warm, edgy, droll, and clever and lends the film unexpected but welcomed bite.

| Original Score: 4.5/5 | May 19, 2022

The sumptuous cinematography by Martyn Colbeck and Gavin Thurston is both stunning to look at and drives home the message that we should all be fighting to save our natural world and the remarkable creatures who reside within.

Monkey Kingdom is the wonderful kind of "good for you" film that we don't see often enough.

| Oct 4, 2021

Monkey Kingdom is a mind-expanding observation of family life among monkeys whose struggle for survival takes them from the jungles of Sri Lanka into an urban environment.

| Oct 4, 2021

A mix of education and entertainment, the doc is filled with useful information, beautiful imagery and ape anecdotes.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Feb 3, 2021

You cannot help but be immersed into the majesty, beauty and the unique features that make these creatures amazing to watch.

Monkey Kingdom is an engaging story that is simple enough for kids to understand and shouldn't bore their parents.

| Original Score: B | Apr 30, 2019

Minor ethical questions do linger... But the higher-level mission here, to engender fascination among young viewers, is well accomplished.

Simplistic, but a charming and child-friendly introduction to our cousins in the wild that no zoo could provide, with a monkey heroine whom kids will cheer.

Disney knows animals, animated and otherwise, and they prove it again with Monkey Kingdom, the company's eighth in its annual series of Earth Day-related films and the best one yet.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Dec 18, 2015

The animal antics, shot primarily in Sri Lanka, are splendidly photographed and frequently charming, but it's hard not to notice how desperately the movie tries to anthropomorphize the characters.

Fey's combination of deadpan delivery, comic timing and deep sympathy for all things goofy keeps the narrative part of the film swinging from scene to scene in nimble fashion, but it's the monkeys who rule this kingdom.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Dec 12, 2015

It's this up-close-and-personal photography style that makes Monkey Kingdom and the other Disneynature films so effective. It's impossible to watch the results without constantly contemplating the process it took to get the footage.

Monkey Kingdom is a passable time-passer, with lovely visuals and positive if oversimplified messages about conservation and motherhood, but nothing more.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | May 30, 2015

If it helps convey zoological and ecological lessons to children with short attention spans, then so be it.

| May 1, 2015

All in all, this is one of Disneynature's best in-country outings so far, so much so that you're very likely to leave the theatre feeling downright giddy and more connected to the world than before.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Apr 23, 2015

Engaging live-action eco-documentary, combining education with entertainment...

| Original Score: 8/10 | Apr 21, 2015

Monkey Kingdom moves so smoothly and quickly that the filmmakers' time-consuming dedication and labor-intense toil stays, as it should be, invisible.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Apr 18, 2015

It might be tempting to roll your eyes at the Disney-ness of it all. Then again, maybe it's that Disney-ness that keeps you watching all the way to that happy ending in the first place.
