Don Juan DeMarco Reviews

Apr 12, 2025

Its weird to see Brando in a sentimental romantic comedy. Even weirder is that he's not half bad despite that it was from late in his career. The rest of the movie is silly but I do like the fantasy flashbacks.

Perhaps the very best film nobody has heard of. I can't figure out why the critics don't love it. Probably because they've shut down their hearts, like the good doctor in this film. It's deeply moving, and funny at times as well. I watch it every year or so. Yes, it's that good. One of the very best.

Couldn't get any more charisma if you tried after watching this delightful film. I'm on my fourth round of revisits. Johnny Depp was superb as Don Juan DeMarco and Marlon Brando (the future Johnny Depp no doubt) was a joy to watch. I'm utterly shocked this film didn't fly off the charts. Like Princess Bride, Don Juan De Marco is sure to become, if it hasn't already, a cult classic that will be watched again and again through the ages.

Johnny Depp is magnifico as Don Juan! This is a wonderfully sensuous comedy that titillates our minds as to what life could be like if we see through the eyes of love.

Un viaje hermoso, de esos que te hacen decidir el destino al final de todo.

The romanticism is extraordinary, not counting the script very well written to the point of becoming Parnassian. However, the performances are not pleasing.

Nothing interesting going on the entire film.

Johnny Depp, Marlon Brando, and Faye Dunaway a comedy involving a colorful delusion about love, sweeping romance, and digging into the actual meaning of the subject centers around a psychiatrist Jack Mickler about to retire but he takes on the most unusual case of a man who claims to be a man expert at being the world's finest lover, of course it may all be in his head he claims to truly know what love means and by donning this persona he see's women for more than just physical beauty; he sees their souls, hearts, desires but who knows Mickler may actually pick up a thing or two about men being better at loving their women and treating them with the right amount of love we all deserve the ideas of passion and pleasure are also closely looked at given that most of us surely take them for granted these days why is it some people just want to dismantle the idea of love? what's wrong with just letting it blossom? we never truly know what our other half in life wants or dreams of unless we actually ask them what is actually sacred? what's worth living for or dying for? we don't have to feel tightened or constrained by just one love of our lives, one can love more than one in their entire lifetimes Depp and Brando are charming drawing that line between delusion and reality, discussing a tale of passion rooted in memory but also fantasy, and discovering that romanticism is incurable in itself a very sweet and funny in-depth analysis of feelings and professional medicine

The best romance movie ever made!

Sep 15, 2018

Don Juan DeMarco hasn't a clever plot at all, but it prefer to watch it like a light movie that will entertain with the help of the charismatic Johnny Depp and with some funny scenes that will make you smile.

One of the best Romantic comedies ever made! The cast is absolutely talented too, and the mise-en-scene is absolutely fabulous!

He who says every woman is a mystery to be solved. One of the earliest films for Johnny Depp and very surprising. Thematically, the film is for the grown ups, but well made without too much sexual exploit. That means you can comfortably sit and watch with your family. This is not actually about Don Juan, but kind of 'The Fall'. I mean the flashback reveals everything and remains as a mystery. The story follows a man who himself declares the real Don Juan DeMarco, the greatest lover of the world. So he ends in a psychiatric centre for the treatment after trying to commit suicide. A doctor who is on the verge to retire set to treat him and when the DeMarco narrates his life story, the doctor too inspires to reinstate his romantic life. The remaining narration tells how they work out to solve the issue once for all. Not a masterpiece, but kind of interesting drama, particularly for how the film characters were drawn. And the story was built cleverly, till the final scene by giving out the viewers a positive message that worth living life to love and to be loved. So if you opt it for the title, not a bad choice, since the theme remains about the love, even the person you are looking for is not present. More like it is a metaphor, when it comes to the real Don Juan and the one in this film. Like people say god is everywhere, the love is as well and so the version/personality of Don Juan in every person. Johnny Depp was so good, an ideal person to play the title role. Marlon Brando was too great, in a simple way. The rest of the cast was not bad, but the entire film focused on these two than anybody else. It's been nearly 25 years since it came out, but I feel a remake would be not a bad idea with changes in the script. Todays writer and directors are clever at doing that, but it should come from a big banner with big names. Maybe Johnny Deep to play the doctor in the modern version. I hope some filmmakers read this and consider that. Meanwhile, it is a worthy film, so it a try. 7/10

One of the most enjoyable movies I've seen.

A funny film, both in the sense that it's humorous and in the sense that it's just a bit odd. Johnny Depp plays a young man who apparently thinks he's Don Juan and must kill himself because the one woman he wants, he can't have. Marlon Brando is the psychiatrist who's evaluating him. Brando's character is days from retirement and taken with this young stranger who recounts an impossible tale of death, love, and adventure. He might be deluded, but is Depp onto something in take on love and romance? Solid acting and production. The story doesn't amount to much, but it's amusing and charming.

With Johnny Depp and Marlon Brando headlining the film, Don Juan DeMarco sounded like a gathering of strong acting. Don Juan Demarco is not a film like any other I have ever seen, for better and for worse. It is a romantic comedy, a fantasy film and a psychological drama all in one which focuses on the theme of love. It is a rather cheesy film but uses that in a thoroughly artistic sense which renders it a great film. Don Juan DeMarco is a quirky tale, and that is both a positive and negative aspect of it. The film goes back and forth between the contemporary timeline relating to establishing the psychology of John Arnold DeMarco/Don Juan as well as the relationship between Dr. Jack Mickler and his wife Marilyn and the contextual storyline of what lead Don Juan DeMarco to become suicidal. There are three plots that run in the film without many of them having much depth to them. So in the narrative department, Don Juan DeMarco is not really that great. But the point of the film is that it is not supposed to be. The film is built simply on the concept of love against the backdrop of a fantasy playing out in the reality of a contemporary society and how the beliefs clash. It never really answers a lot of the questions that it asks, but as an exploration of romance and beauty, Don Juan DeMarco does the job just right. The lack of story in the film is justified simply by its spirit and energy, and while it may not be a groundbreaking film or one with that much of a story, it certainly benefits from the presence of Jeremy Leven as director. The main thing that Jeremy Leven brings to Don Juan DeMarco is an incredible visual style. The scenery for the film is just wonderful and it makes the tale seem really legitimate, and it is all captured with wonderfully atmospheric cinematography which works to illuminate the colour of it all. The wonderful beauty of the versatile settings in Don Juan DeMarco is easily brought to life as well as the script, so he turns the story into the fantasy romantic comedy that it really cries out to be, letting it flourish into the eccentric and beautiful creation that it had the potential to exist as. The soundtrack is also nice, with Brian Adams' Academy Award nominated song "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?" being the high point of it all. But the most impressive aspect of Don Juan DeMarco is just how much the cast are able to illuminate the screen in the feature. Johnny Depp is a flawless casting decision for the role of the titular Don Juan DeMarco. Considered by many to be one of the sexiest men alive, he is a perfect fit for the role of real-life a sex god. He is perfectly seductive in the part due to his slick and natural sex appeal as well as his smooth line delivery. One of the central elements in the story of Don Juan Demarco is the titular character attempting to convince Dr. Jack Mickler that his fantastical tale of being the greatest lover of all time is factual, and with Johnny Depp's dedication to the genuine spirit of the character, he immensely succeeds at convincing audiences of it in the same way. Johnny Depp is able to capture the sleek sexiness necessary for the character and then add a level of sympathetic depth to it, transcending the potential stereotype of a Spanish sex symbol. Johnny Depp is at his sexiest in Don Juan Demarco without forgetting to put a likable and sympathetic spirit into the part, capturing a sense of dramatic depth as well as subtle comic charm to serve as an amalgamation of a lot of Johnny Depp's abilities as an actor. He turns Don Juan Demarco into a strong star vehicle for himself with seamless ease. Marlon Brando is just excellent in Don Juan Demarco. For an actor considered to be one of the greatest male screen legends of all time famous for playing iconic character roles such as Don Vito Corleone in The Godfather or Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire, it is a nice change of pace to see him playing a more simple and down to earth role like the part of Dr. Jack Mickler in Don Juan DeMarco. With his performance being mainly anchored by the way he interacts with the surrounding cast, Marlon Brando is able to share a light and friendly chemistry with Johnny Depp while having a realistic and touching sense of interaction with Faye Dunaway. Marlon Brando's restrained performance capitalises on his ability to draw the strength out of relationships with other actors, doing his best and helping the other actors in doing the same. As much of the film is lighthearted, Marlon Brando plays the sensible moral compass of the story with a strong dedication to the dramatic aspects of the film. He makes Dr. Jack Mickler a touching and likable character through the most simple acting dedication, and it is a strong example of one of his final performances. Faye Dunaway also delivers a nice effort. In her small but pivotal role, she plays the object of Marlon Brando's affections and delivers a likable effort as a woman on the receiving end of inspired romantic gestures. Her role is a simple and easygoing one which uses her most likable characteristics as a person which is great considering it is a nice contrast to her more intense and character focused roles that she is more iconic for. Faye Dunaway makes a strong duo with Marlon Brando and brings an effective touch of meaning to her role. So while Don Juan DeMarco is short on story, it works as a colourful examination of love through a strong sense of style from director Jeremy Leven and wonderful performances from Johnny Depp and Marlon Brando who share a nice chemistry.
