Dream Scenario Reviews

Apr 23, 2025

I got bored, which is never a good sign. I had hoped to connect to the characters but I never really did. When that was failing, I was just hoping for some answers which never came. I thought it was well made and the story was fine but that's about it

Weird little film. Can't go wrong with Tim Meadows AND Talking Heads.

Hard to make an entertaining movie about the worlds most pathetic man.

A well-written film that keeps us hooked from the start, making us eager to see what comes next. It follows a structured narrative with a clear midpoint, though some plot points become repetitive, especially in the second act. The third act feels a bit scattered as the film juggles multiple ideas along with the protagonist’s final outcome. Before this, the story maintains a strong grasp on its central themes, exploring the effects of fame, how it’s exploited, and offering sharp commentary on cancel culture. While the resolution could have been more focused, these are minor issues in an otherwise engaging film with solid dialogue and a fair amount of humor. Nicolas Cage delivers a strong performance in the lead role. While the technical aspects don’t particularly stand out, they effectively serve the film’s needs. Ultimately, it’s a short, simple, and entertaining movie with an original, fun concept. Despite a few shortcomings, it’s definitely worth a watch.

This film tackles the idea of fame, celebrity idolisation and rejection, cancel culture and the preconceived ideas people have about their "enemies". Cage is playing a boring plain man but he still ends up being the most interesting actor on screen.

This movie made me cry a lot. Dream scenario is A showcase to the absurdities of humanity with an excellently curated performance by Nic cage. Anyone with empathy might feel saddened by the entire situation presented; otherwise it could feel like a strange and awkward time while viewing this film.

The idea is new and good, but there is the impression that the plot collapses befor the Finish Line.

Dream Scenario: A Cinematic Odyssey of the Subconscious "Dream Scenario", a cinematic endeavor directed by the enigmatic Kristoffer Borgli, is a cerebral exploration of the human psyche, weaving a complex narrative that delves into the depths of our collective unconscious. With Borgli's signature style and commitment to a nuanced approach, the film manages to leave an indelible mark on the viewer's psyche. The narrative revolves around Paul Matthews, a charismatic and enigmatic figure played by Nicolas Cage, who embodies the character with an unwavering commitment to his craft. Cage's portrayal is a routine in eccentricity, as he navigates the dreamscapes that Paul inhabits with an unnerving ease. The supporting cast, while not as prominently featured as Cage, still delivers performances that add depth to the film's thematic undertow. One of the standout aspects of "Dream Scenario" is its cinematography, which masterfully captures the surreal landscapes that Paul's subconscious conjures. The use of visual effects is judicious, allowing the viewer to immerse themselves in the dreamworld without feeling overwhelmed by excessive CGI. Director Borgli's decision to tone down the more visceral elements of his previous work pays off, as it allows the audience to focus on the psychological implications of Paul's experiences. The production design is another notable aspect of the film, with its dreamscapes often blurring the lines between reality and fantasy. The use of set pieces is clever, allowing the audience to become disoriented and lost in the labyrinthine corridors of Paul's life. While some may argue that the dramatic narrative plays out to be bathetic and more subdued, it has to be acknowledged that "Dream Scenario" is an intriguing thrill ride into the depths of a shared, psychologically horrifying phenomenon well worth exploring. The score, much like the film's overall aesthetic, is understated yet effective. The underuse of music creates an ominous atmosphere that permeates every scene, leaving the viewer with a sense of impending doom. The silence is a potent tool in the hands of the editor as it allows the audience to fill in the blanks and become an active participant in the narrative. In terms of themes, "Dream Scenario" is a film that defies easy categorization. It is a study of the human psyche, delving into the dark recesses of our minds to expose the deepest fears and anxieties that we often try to keep hidden. The film is also a commentary on the blurring of reality and dreams, as the horror of people's experiences with Paul in their dreams become increasingly difficult to distinguish from waking danger. One of the most striking aspects of "Dream Scenario" is its willingness to subvert expectations. Borgli's decision to dial back the gore and visceral horror moments that A24 is famously distinguished for, in favor of a more cerebral approach, is a bold move that mostly pays off. This shift in tone allows the audience to focus on the psychological implications of Paul's experiences, making the film's themes feel more nuanced and thought-provoking. In conclusion, "Dream Scenario" is a thought-provoking and unsettling cinematic experience that is sure to leave viewers on the edge of their seats and sheer bewilderment. While it may not be as overtly gory as some of A24's previous films, it is a film that rewards close attention and reflection. With its clever production design, nuanced cinematography, and understated score, "Dream Scenario" will challenge your perceptions and leave you questioning the nature of reality -- a film not to be missed by fans of psychological horror and anyone looking for a film that will leave a lasting impression. **Rating: 77% (3.9/5)**

Cage is as engaging as ever, a great satire that you wont regret watching.

Absolutely terrible. Only watched bc of Nick Cage and it’s god awful. There’s no plot; the only good part was him farting while cheating. No offense but the wife’s acting sucked also. I would only recommend this movie to someone I hate, so it could waste their time also.

This movie just made me wonder, if people are actually this stupid...

A bizarre surreal dark comedy with an insane premise and one hell of an awkward yet consistently engaging performance from Nicholas Cage. The movie can get really uncomfortable and cringe-inducing, but it almost feels like a case-study about a character drenched in this type of behavior and how it catches up to him despite his overnight fame (or even because of it). It’s a hard watch, but perfectly designed for such distress and I’d say that it overall succeeds with its dedication to going all the way with their characters and premise.

Imagine a film featuring Nicolas Cage, an actor I don't typically follow or admire, but this particular story captures his essence in a unique way. In the movie, he plays a professor whose presence haunts the dreams of people around the globe. Initially, these dreams are benign, but they gradually morph into unsettling, aggressive nightmares, with Cage's character at the center of their turmoil. The film has the distinct vibe of an A24 production—slow-paced, occasionally jarring, and heavy on dialogue. There are moments where the narrative feels stretched and a bit tedious, which may deter some viewers. Nevertheless, Cage delivers a commendable performance, effectively embodying the various facets of his character. The dialogue about the nightmares people experience can come off as somewhat cheesy, especially when the characters project their fears onto him, impacting his real-life persona in a negative way. In summary, while the film has its merits, I wouldn't consider it one I’d revisit. It feels like a one-time experience, lacking that quality that compels you to watch it again. I'm grateful that it’s available for streaming because I doubt I could have endured it in a theater setting.

Paul Matthews (Nicholas Cage) is a thoroughly benign college professor who seems to continually fall short of impacting the lives of those around him, including his family and students. However, when he starts inhabiting the dreams of countless strangers, his life veers off on a decidedly different tangent. Dream Scenario is a fascinating and surreal journey into the human mind, buoyed by a typically wild performance from Cage and some creative and unsettling direction from Norwegian director Kristoffer Borgli. Rich in themes relevant to modern-day culture (cancel culture, collective victimization, group think, the dangers of social media, etc.), it’s a wild ride that will leave you pondering its messages long after the credits roll.

***SPOILERS*** Dream Scenario has a very interesting concept, but I didn't love the execution. The characters are very well-written. Paul and Janet are unfortunately realistic. They are both weak-willed, but they lie to each other to cover that. The other characters are good too, but a few of their reactions to the dreams changing were illogical. For example they had no reason to write loser onto the car. On the other hand, I think Paul had influence on how the dreams changed. While he was a hard-working, but weak-willed person, the dreams made him look unhelpful and the second he did something sexual, the dreams became a lot weirder. But that's just my theory. The ending wants to be full of mystery, but that dream is what Janet wanted, so in my mind, they moves together after the film. I loved the cinematography, I loved how old and nostalgic the movie looked. But I didn't like the editing. The movie is less than a hundred minutes, but still manages to feel like a two hour movie. The acting was flawed. There were a few scenes where Nicolas Cage was just acting awfully. These are the reasons I think the execution is far from good. Dream Scenario is thought-provoking, but feels like a very long movie.

The world would literally be a better place without this movie. It will simply leave you depressed and feeling duped for wasting hours of your life on a pointless journey to nowhere. What an astonishing waste of everyone's time.
