Dunkirk Reviews

Apr 25, 2025

I can't say it's the worst movie in the world as long as a single copy of Bo Derek's Tarzan exists, but it does represent the widest chasm between my expectations and the end product. It's also very bad. I have to wonder if what I regret having gone to the Imax to see was actually the same movie the paid critics saw. Enough said, except I should mention that I spent most of the movie wondering whether that poor guy was ever going to get to take his dump.

Nolan’s finest work. A masterpiece.

Christopher Nolan is a magician. Its like everything he touches turns into gold. The way he lets the story play out is magnificent. From the acting, the writing, the score, the visuals, it just works great. What a great film!

When i watched it in theaters i was a bit confused by the structure and it was hard to understand the dialogue, i think it was too low and coupled with the accents sometimes it was hard to follow but i still enjoyed it. I just rewatched it at home and absolutely loved it.

This is definitely one of the better war movies I've ever seen. Even though it was slow at times, it was incredibly suspenseful and intriguing. I definitely recommend it for history fans!

This movie exceeded my expectations! I think it’s one of the best movies I’ve seen in a while. Certain scenes had me on the edge of my seat.

This is a movie that should be shown in every British classroom, while not the nations finest hour, it shows the heart of the people, stirs up some pride in being British. A true story, with much action and not a lot of dialogue, Christopher Nolan makes you feel like you are in and amongst it. No particular stand out actor, each played the part they were meant to. The story was the star, and of course the Director who knew exactly what he wanted to do and achieved it.

Good war film, not my favorite or even very close to a favorite but it's visually awesome and pretty suspenseful at times. I think most people will at least enjoy it.

If there was no war film about Dunkirk released in the year of 2017, that would’ve meant no Oscar nomination for Christopher Nolan at that year’s Academy Awards Ceremony. This is certainly one of his best works he has made. I’ve already seen it about more than 2 times. Best Movie of 2017.

WARNING - Spoilers: I thought Nolan's film was appallingly bad. I was very keen to see it when the trailers came out, and my disappointment in the final product was crushing. I watched it twice as I'd promised to go see it with a friend and frankly, thirty minutes into my second viewing I was utterly bored. Weirdly empty beaches that should have been full of waiting Tommys, the strangely intact town with none of the heavy and wide-spread damage that Dunkirk sustained early on, silly sequences that made no sense or were patently unbelievable and absurd, like the out-of-fuel Spitfire shooting down a German bomber (more than unlikely - impossible), the torpedoed destroyer, sitting at anchor, all lit up at night, with empty decks, doing nothing at all, no sense of urgency to get the hell out of there. But then, where were the unceasing air attacks by the Luftwaffe? Why were there women in the destroyer? And how did it sink when, although the mess was completely flooded, the soldier found himself well above water on the forecastle when he exited? And that utterly ludicrous scene in the fishing boat when the British want to murder the French soldier - due to his weight? The boat was so full of water by that time that it couldn't have floated off the beach anyway, unlike the scene we got a few moments later. And what was the point? Like the utterly useless scene where the British officer accidently kills the boy in the yacht? How exactly did that contribute to the story of Dunkirk? It wasn't based on any real event. And Kenneth Branagh yelling "push that boat off" as the hospital ship sinks after being bombed. For crying out loud, he plays a FULL commander in the Royal Navy! First, he would never call a ship a "boat" - only a landsman would make that kind of mistake, and even more to the point, he would realise that there was no way in heaven that an 850 ton ship could be "pushed away" manually by the soldiers. Stupidity reaching the level of being moronic. I won't even start with the postwar Dutch minesweepers pretending to be British destroyers, or the obvious 1950s French destroyer also standing in as an RN one. I thought the days of slapping a swastika on a Sherman tank and calling it a Panzer had died with the 1970s? Nolan's refusal to use ANY CGI doomed this film from the start, as the end result demonstrates. HMCS HAIDA, preserved in Hamilton, Ontario, would have made a good stand-in for HMSs JAGUAR and JACKEL that were at Dunkirk, both of which were very similar in design and from the same time. The sad thing is that he didn't even consider using use ORP BLYSKAWIKA - not only is she a period Polish WWII destroyer painted in WWII camouflage today as a museum ship, BUT SHE WAS ACTUALLY AT DUNKIRK IN 1940! Nolan's poor decisions and paper-thin study of this important historical event can only satisfy those with only the shallowest of understanding or knowledge of this critical operation in WWII history. Frankly, the eight minutes of this event portrayed in "Atonement" leave Nolan's entire film completely in the shadows.

This is one of Christopher Nolan's best. Dunkirk has amazing visuals and cinematography that makes it a must see on the big screen. And it's such an impactful film.

A wall of sound creating a mounting sense of dread for the men who found themselves surprised and cutoff by a relentless enemy. An imperfect film but one that uses sound design and editing with precision to create a sense of ever rising anxiety and dread. In that most crucial sense, I think the film accomplishes its mission at creating an authentic set of feelings for the audience while still honoring the memory of the men who experienced this battle firsthand.

The film does a great job in showing just how young these lads would have really been, and the brutality of war. However the time jumping held the film back, and didn’t serve the story telling. Lest we forget.

A very tense war film that can get a bit dull and clunky at times (could've used a lot more focus on the civilian rescue boats). But this is made up for by its exciting action sequences and grandiose sense of scale.
