Eastern Promises Reviews
I liked the environment a lot. For some reason, mainstream movies can't avoid putting a romance everywhere, even when there are mafia and murders involved.
Not sure why this one garners such raves. The fight scene is pretty good, but other than that I didn't see anything special here.
Quite watchable, good acting, plenty of the obligatory foul language (what film isn’t nowadays?) but I found the ending somewhat…unfinished. One of those films that seemed to suddenly come to an end and I thought ‘Oh, is that it?’
The best Russian gangster movie ever made. Great acting and directing. Viggo Mortensen steals the show.
This movie feels like it was written by Michael Scott.
Sensationally shot, directed, & paced. The way it immerses you into Russian culture nearly reminded me of the wedding scenes from Deer Hunter or Godfather. It's different than those movies, but as much effort was invested into precision on small details. Cronenberg's best ability (at least in Eastern Promises & The Fly) is pacing. You never feel the need to fast forward, and there isn't much wasted film. Many great movies have lulls; this really doesn't. It's an achievement and one of the better movies I've seen recently. Good enough to watch multiple times.
This movie is good, a very solid gangster movie and the brutality caught me by surprise. As a new dad, certain things made me sick to my stomach but definitely proved a point. I did think the story was a little too predictable, calling most of the twists and reveals but didn't take away too much
It would've been better if it was about two hours instead of 96 minutes, with more character development. That said, the acting and direction was excellent. I really enjoyed it.
Well told, taut crime story with fantastic Mortensen.
Not Cronenberg's best, but definitely a great one! Great actors, photography and story!
I wanted to love Eastern Promises. A History of Violence is one of my most liked films, but EP just did not do it for me.
Cronenberg’s A History of Violence was far superior.
Absolutely incredible, underrated film. Some people criticize the ending, but I disagree – I think it was genius.
Eastern promises is a great proof that David cronenberg is a great director that can make very great movies other than body horror.
This is descent and actually really good until the very end. Because it sounded to me unfinished. I'd naturally expect the final battle with the boss etc.. Viggo Mortensen, Naomi Watts and all delivered solid performance. The Cronenberg visual taste here and there, but overall, it's an exciting crime thriller. Jerzy Skolimowski played uncle role.
A perfectly cast film with great performances all around.
This easily gets a solid 4/5 from me. Is it a great movie? No, but very good, with an excellent turn by Viggo Mortensen and decent performances all-around. Definitely worth the watch. There's at least one early plot point that doesn't seem to add up, but it doesn't wholly detract from the entirety of the story. Because of the twist, it would have been great to include some backstory because, without it, you honestly wonder about the nature of the protagonist to have resigned himself to such a life.
Never heard of this film. Must have slipped under the radar, I wonder why. Agree with Critics and Audience on this one. Underpinned by a great performance from Viggo Mortensen this is a brutal, graphic window into the murky world of the Russian underworld in London. It doesn't paint Russians (well apart from Viggo - and we only get to know that towards the end) in a good light. How prescient.
Great movie with solid performances and a good story. It's not your typical mob movie but there is decent intrigue and Viggo Mortensen's performance alone makes it worth watching.
Beautifully atmospheric and sharply filmed with much graphic violence that really is unnecessary in my opinion. Unnecessary as in we don't need to see this killing in the flesh so to speak but a clever film maker would only need to suggest such deeds are being done. Now the UK Russian mafia storyline is interesting especially these days when there are plenty of multi millionaire Russian oligarchs and hoods operating in London. But for me the weak link and fundamental problem with this film is the poor quality acting and totally miscast character of Anna the maternity nurse. She is unconvincing and just seems to be phoning in a performance on a different film. So for some unexplained reason the baby ends up with Anna despite her not being the actual mother. The end of the film concludes with the two leads gazing into each others eyes by the River Thames eyes, with Anna clutching a swaddled bundle that is supposed to be the infant. What could of been a cracking Godfather type study of the Russian mafia families in London is ultimately wasted by Cronenburg conclusion is at odds with the
