Edge of Darkness Reviews
There are two or three great ideas in Edge Of Darkness, but none are exploited to their full effect. Instead, it is liposuctioned, lean and forgettable, while providing some jarringly exquisite eruptions of action.

A fierce thriller that doesn’t disappoint.

William Monahan’s script also brings a new sensibility that recalls contemporary American crime fiction as much as British conspiracy thriller and Campbell gives this take momentum and menace.

Only in Mel Gibson movies do the bad guys pay double for their crimes.

The story's more thoughtful nuances (including the idea of a father haunted by guilt and his daughter's ghost) are soon jettisoned for more visceral thrills as Gibson's remorseless avenger hunts down his foes.

A disappointing mishmash of performances.

The problem here is the script, a hoary howler rife with maximum-revenge clichés and major-conspiracy convolutions.

[I]t's [Mel] Gibson who shines here, and it's fantastic to see him so back on form.

Edge of Darkness has all the right ingredients to get us into Mel's corner...yet the film is lifeless, slow and worst of all, boring.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Oct 16, 2019
Never adds anything new to its genre, but it hits all the notes it sets out to hit with good, solid craftsmanship and little fuss.

This is a film that has its crowd-pleasing moments, but also has a little substance beneath the surface that makes it pretty compelling, too.

The acting, with the exception of Bojana Novakovic, adds nothing to the trite plot.

In a film of unimpressionable characters, and vacant plots, Edge of Darkness is forgettable, dry and at times boring.

Gibson has always given good cop, and in Edge of Darkness he does not disappoint as decent, career-minded homicide detective Thomas Craven.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 23, 2017
A thoughtful and harrowing drama about the lengths people will go to survive - and the changes of heart that one person undergoes to help them.

As I watched Edge of Darkness, I couldn't stop seeing it as a perverse form of Hollywood rehab.

Films like this are musicals for people who enjoy gunfire and Mel Gibson being shouty. They're that satisfyingly heightened version of reality no one actually gets to experience.

Adapted from the landmark BBC mini-series by original director Martin Campbell, Edge of Darkness is a polished piece of political suspense masquerading as a crime drama and pulling off both rather successfully.
