The Singer Reviews
Movie did not get any advertising. Jlo should have won award for her performance. Best jlo movie ever..
I watched this movie having previously seen in documentaries credible first-person accounts of how Bobby Cruz, the crowned King of Salsa who then converted to Christianity in the 70s, reached out to Hector Lavoe with the Gospel--and I was disappointed to see Lavoe's saddest years depicted in this movie with not a mention of these important highlights. I suppose the producers chose the scenes they thought best given their funding--but the director could have taken advantage of the movie's run time in much better ways than spending nearly the first half of it in music video mode. You just can't build a character like that! Marc Anthony as Lavoe could have carried a much more convincing presence in the movie had the directors/producers milked the Lavoe's already profoundly moving story a bit more in several key scenes. These were rather hastily scooted by the viewer instead of elaborating them just a bit more--such as the psychological impact on Lavoe due to the death of his brother, his Dad's strong disapproval of Hector's first trip to NY (before reaching stardom), the deeply consenting relationship Hector gained with his audiences in NY (which were mostly depicted in the film multiple times without Lavoe's frequent dialog with the crowds--what a missed opportunity for character-building monologues), and Hector's suicidal fall from a ninth floor hotel balcony towards the end of his life (a scene that was just abruptly transitioned with nearly no emotional appeal). It's a shame Marc Anthony's portrayal of Lavoe wasn't given the chance to reach its potential in these scenes knowing how passionate Marc Anthony must have felt about this particular role and what a passionate artist he already is in his own right. Jennifer Lopez somewhat saves the day towards the end of this often rushed and underdeveloped story, delivering a heartfelt performance as 'Puchi', Hector's often overlooked and underappreciated wife.
Excellent!!! Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony deliver their greatest dramatic performances thus far. El Cantante is intense and profoundly moving with powerful scenes of of Anthony emboding the Puerto Rican singer - enormously talented, yet equally troubled Hecto Lavoe. His wife Pucci (Lopez) is strongly devoted to Hector although he puts her through hell most of their marriage, despite this - her love and loyalty gets her & Hector through a marriage plauged by extremely difficult times. Overall this an absolutely wonderful bio-pic
The people that says this movie is bad is because they don't know about salsa music and they don't understand this movie, people belive that if it is a Latin American movie or something related is bad but is not this is a movie Latin Americans really enjoy
Well they say there is always a strong woman behind a man and this woman was so weak that she destroyed a man. Trying to make it in America requires a cut throat attitude and a sensible mind and this movie proves that money can be made if you push the weak hard enough. Strongly acted with lots of sex and drugs adding to the ambiance. Nibbles: Puerto Rican rice pudding.
For all american this one of the best movies maid now ur Histories all amereicanlatinos born inpaet of north amerika have some influencen inthis type of movie i will say to all my amerikanlatino peer dnt miss this movie learn one part of ur culture tnk for open ur mind carlos iam pure amerikan
Excellent movie Jennifer and Marc really showcase their acting abilities!! The music is amazing aswell defintly recommend it! Especially to all the Puerto Ricans out there! Oscar-Worthy movie! J.Lo did an incredibly amazing job as the feisty and fierce Nilda "Puchi" Roman and Marc did an excellent job as the salsa legend Hector Lavoe!!
I love it!!! It was so good. The Music was amazing. Marc Anthony did a really good job protraying the singer. JLo Killed it!!! She was so good the first time I seen her give such a good performance.
it was an ok movie. its one of those movies the singer faces problems with drugs, alcohol, family, wife, friends, then he dies. j-lo is soo sexy in this movie. but its a true story of how salsa the music was born.
Standard-issue musician biopic with sex, drugs and...Salsa! Lopez overdoes it but is kinda charming in small doses.
Jennifer Lopez rules this movie. The only problem is that El Cantante is more about Puchi than Hector. But it´s really fine.
don't like marc Anthony much but it enjoyed and the songs he sang , sad that someone with talent loses his battle. good movie
I can't believe this movie didn't get the credit that it deserves. Lopez & Anthony were great actors in this film. This movie is based on a true story that shaped American history and the birth of Salsa music!
It seemed really long, and I got bored a few times, but in the end, it was a really good movie. I knew nothing about Hector Lavoe before the movie, but it seemed like a great story. So sad and heartbreaking. I liked it a lot. Probably Jennifer Lopez's best, and Marc Anthony is always amazing. He can do no wrong.
