A Royal Affair Reviews
A nice period drama set in 18th century Danish history. The original actors: the deranged king, the neglected queen and the physician who had a complex relationship with both, lose badly when they attempt to reform society. In the final scene we are told that their (their, includes all three of them) children were able to achieve their goals a generation later. Although the events are totally unknown in the US, they are presented in a way that retains our attention. A nice way to learn how three hundred years later we ended up with Lego and Ozempic.
Denmark had a King that was schizophrenic. Vikander married him and had lost all hope until Mads became the King's "doctor". It's a royal mess as love and power orbit the king and affect the people.
'A Royal Affair' is an excellent film. I enjoyed it all, every bit, but the ending is what sold it for me - great conclusion, which didn't do the predictable wrap up that I was expecting it to do. Despite running for over two hours the pacing is near perfect, as is the standout score. The actors do wonderful jobs. Alicia Vikander is particularly brilliant, as is a fantastic Mads Mikkelsen. Mikkel Følsgaard also brings a strong performance, early on I wasn't fully convinced but by the end he won me over tenfold. The supporting cast are very good too. Such a well written and well told story, the whole look of how its brought to life onscreen is superb. It's a breeze to watch all the way through and by the time the third act completes it manages to bring emotion into the mix as well. Big fan.
The King "Christian" slays here with booming impulsiveness that hangs over every scene. He also emerges as the most endearing, as he is unapologetically a King who likes to party.
Passable only for its actors.
To start with the plot pace was a bit slow but its features somewhat lavish costumes and settings which kept me interested. The characters are intriguing and I found the political aspects interesting too. I can't say I knew anything about this story beforehand and earlyish on I wasn't sure if it would keep my interest but it has more subsrance to it than I think I'd earlier expected. The cast give very decent performances, with the two most memorable, to me anyway, were Mads Mikkelson as the physician and Mikkel Boe Folsgaard as King Christian VII. If your interested in historical European politics, particularly that of Denmark and/or if your keen on the cast, then I'd definitely recommend this film. Its surprisingly engrossing.
One of the best films you will ever see that is based on a true story.
A very good historical drama. And while each actor is respectably good, the unsung hero is probably Mikkel Følsgaard who plays the complex character of King Christian VII. The film has a lot of historical details that are well woven into an easy enough to follow plot. It's a good screenplay. Great costumes, set pieces, and production value. Not that it matters, but I suppose the only knock could be, none of the primary actors look anything like the portraits of the people they play.
Everything needed in a great historical drama. Beautiful people, costumes, and a great cast, script. Quite interested now in learning more about that period in Denmark's history.
A very great costume drama with fantastic performances from Mads Mikkelsen (Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky, Flame & Citron) and Alicia Vikander (Son of a Gun, The Man from U.N.C.L.E.)
A Royal Affair is one of many, of my best movies. I can watch it over and over again. I loved the backdrop scenes where the movie was shot. Prague is a beautiful country and I hope to some day visit Denmark, Russia, England all the places that the movie represented. Mads Mikkelsen is gorgeous and so is Alicia Vikander. I only wish the movie had and alternate ending where the two of them fled the country with there children, and lived somewhere where they could never be found by their accusers raising there children together. In the end it was morbidly sad the beheading of her lover and the queen being kicked out the country because of the affair.
A better than average royal scandal/love story tale within an historical drama, 𝘈 𝘙𝘰𝘺𝘢𝘭 𝘈𝘧𝘧𝘢𝘪𝘳 has all the basic aspects of a competent movie. We have an interesting base story line of a vibrant young wife paired with a bumbling boob of a spoiled man-child barely in touch with the harsh realities of life or his true command as king. There's the visually arresting work of the cinematographer and DP; with the glamorous trappings of the castle, wardrobe, the base look of the peasant streets, the vibrant countryside, and the beauty of Alicia Vikander. There is very rote style directing but done so with the assured hand of experience. And then there's the acting, with fine work as always from Mikkelsen, and another fine turn from Vikander. Credit also to Følsgaard for his work as the weak, unfit king; also to Dencik for being such a preening, sadistic little power hungry rat bastard. 3.4 stars
What a fantastic movie! What a beautiful, sad and touching story. Great acting overall, mads Mikkelsen is always good, and this is one of his best roles in my opinion, Alicia Vikander was beautiful as the young queen. The costumes were also beautiful, I love fashion in that period, and this movie had some beautiful clothes to dwell on. Go and see it, you wont be sorry!
Regally acted, ravishingly dressed and stately staged, this nominee for Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Globes and Oscars is a riveting retelling of the clandestine titular romance of Queen Caroline Mathilda and Johann Friedrich Struensee, the German physician to her mentally ill husband King Christian VII, whose dream of reforming Denmark with Enlightenment ideals are as ill-starred.
A beautiful film, A Royal Affair is one of the best foreign language films I've seen! Alicia VIkander is a true star!
