Equity Reviews

A well written and taut script that delivers in telling the story of feminism and Wall Street. Entertaining.

I usually enjoy psychological thrillers, and this was no exception. Nearly an all female cast, proving women can play power-hungry roles with elan.

Interesting subject but way too talky and ultimately boring. Hardly a thriller.

It is cool to see some real IPO shit in a movie... but it seems that it was all there was... not story, no art. Just equity shit.

The best thing this movie has got going for it is its female-dominated cast, and I admit, it is indeed a breath of fresh air to see such a strong female lead protagonist in Anna Gunn. However, it's all downhill from here. The plot starts off with some pretty intriguing questions, only for the film to shelf the whole Dynacorp controversy. It could have expanded more on this subject to shed a light on an extremely interesting tale of how a veteran with a previously strong record fell flat on her face. The characters, besides Anna Gunn's, are quite unlikeable, and forgettable in every which way. Worst of all, the film's ending leaves too much to be desired. Some have suggested that this is due to the film trying to be as realistic as possible (and indeed this ending is realistic), but there are many other movies that offer a realistic ending through a satisfying piece of story-telling. In conclusion, you can watch this movie if you're a fan of financial thrillers and you have exhausted all other A-list options such as The Big Short, Wolf of Wall Street, Billions, Margin Call, etc. to pass the time.

It's "All About Eve" in corporate finances but closer to the real functions that is frustratingly stressful, unsatisfyingly unjustified and well-performed, mainly led by Anna Gunn, with a rhythmically tense backdrop score of extra amplification. (B)

- How far would you go for Equity? - After graduating from college, I was lucky enough to get a job in my field. I was an analytical chemist for a pharmaceutical company. At first, I felt like I had made it. Here I was, this young woman in corporate America, thinking I was going to help change the world. I was sadly mistaken. I have never felt so belittled or insignificant, despite leading a project that saved the company time and money. Needless to say, equality in the workplace is a sensitive topic for me. So when I read the film festival description of Equity, "Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad) dons power suits to star in a female-centric thriller set on Wall Street... Equity is a smart thriller set in the corporate world", I knew I had to see this film. As promised, Equity deals with the misogynistic nature of the American business world. Naomi Bishop, played by Gunn, is a successful businesswoman who has been working her entire career for this next promotion but is still forced prove herself to her male boss and fight for a role that, if she were a man, would be hers without question. What I didn't quite expect, but appreciated, was the film also highlighting other issues women face in the corporate world and the different types of women found there. First up is Naomi, the middle-aged woman who does her best to keep her integrity and play by the rules. She gets thrown under the bus by her younger female colleague and mentee, Erin Manning (Sarah Megan Thomas, Backwards). Erin, the young, attractive and ambitious woman uses stereotypical female tactics to get what she wants. She uses sex to her advantage and stabs her female boss and advocate in the back to get ahead. She represents all that is wrong with women in American business. Yes, she has the very real fear of losing her job when she discovers she's pregnant but is it protective motherly instinct that drives her to betray her biggest ally? Or is it greed? Last, but certainly not least, is Samantha (Alysia Reiner, Orange Is the New Black), the unorthodox lawyer who does what it takes to get the job done. She's good, very good. But after years of working low paying government jobs and having a family to support in the country's most expensive city, she jumps ship and takes a lucrative job because money isn't a dirty word anymore. It's okay to want it, right? Equity is great. It represents much of what is wrong with America. Land of the Free? More like Land of the Greedy and Morally Ambiguous. Today equity tends to play out through women stepping on other women to get to the top. It's every woman for herself. And only the prettiest, youngest and most ruthless survive. While I was pretty and young, I just wasn't ruthless enough and, thankfully, my stint in corporate America only lasted four years. But that's four years too long if you ask me and is time I'll never get back. ---------- This review was first published on Narrative Muse, http://narrativemuse.co/movies/equity, and was written by Jess Brownwell. It's hard to like a movie when you don't care about any of the main characters.

There was no surprise to it.

characters were not that well developed, but covered the plot. Acting was so so. Thought she was better in Breaking Bad. Good subject, but the movie did not inspire me.

2/3/18 This was just OK. The story wasn't bad, but I didn't care about the characters much, and it wasn't really clear what their motivations were through most of it (until the end). It felt like it was trying to be this big reveal at the end, but kind of fell flat. I usually like finance movies, but this one didn't fee too realistic to me.

Couldn't even finish it. Actors aren't famous and it's clear why; they can't act.

Sometimes a little hard to follow the nuance as I'm not a member of the investor class. A lot of money can hang in the balance of just the slightest rumor not hushed with the right timing. To do so is very illegal. So?

6/30/17 Starz I think Anna had a better deal with Walter White. Everytime I watch a movie about this business and the type of people who inhabit it I wonder who could possibly want a life like that. I guess money Trumps ( pun intended) everything in some humans lives, sad.

An interestingly female perspective on the financial world, specifically looking at IPOs and the kind of things that go on behind the scenes. A good watch.

"Money doesn't have to be a dirty word." Provocative and full of intrigue, Equity attempts to explore the Wall Street drama from a feminist perspective. The story follows an investment banker who's hired to take a privacy company public, but on the eve of its launch some discrepancies are discovered that threaten to cause the deal to fall through. The cast is decent enough but no one gives a particularly strong performance. And while the script does a pretty good job at building tension and suspense, it never really pays off with any big betrayals or reveals. Also, there's a lot of moral grayness and no clear-cut villains (rather different interests working against each other). A mediocre film, Equity is a little to plot heavy and its characters aren't very compelling.

Slick financial thriller that makes you realize just how dog-eat-dog the business/financial world is and be thankful that you don't work there!

Apr 16, 2017

It is well acted with plenty of sleazy corporate characters to fill all the stereotypes that is enjoyable to watch. The plot turns are just too obviously foreshadowed and delivered leading to its lackluster ending.

Much better than I thought it would be.
