Ezra Reviews
Greedy as this sounds, I might have wanted to see more of Ezra than his bickering parents, but if that states anything, we need more films that positively depict neurodivergent characters on screen.
| Original Score: B | Feb 25, 2025
Blends humor and heart so well, providing a funny and moving look at fatherhood and redemption.

Tony Goldwyn directs from a witty screenplay by Tony Spiridakis, and this bumpy, big-hearted film employs a cast of charming heavy hitters to paper over the cracks.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 3, 2025
Cannavale and Fitzgerald breathe life and honesty into a pair of roles that could have leaned hard into nostalgia or slapstick humor, but the script is deftly written and cuts the drama like a knife when necessary.

A family drama about a caring but volatile father, an overly worried mother, and an autistic boy.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Dec 26, 2024
While normally I’m a soft touch for any film about autistic children, one just can’t let something as sappy and annoyingly didactic as this road movie get by without some honest assessment.

This is a deeply human film that invites reflection on the experience of families facing mental health issues. Moreover, it highlights the importance of accepting diversity instead of trying to change others. [Full review in Spanish]

Ezra does have two things that make it worth recommending: its excellent cast and its raw emotion.
| Original Score: B- | Nov 18, 2024
It warms our hearts a little bit, sure, but its insights are muddled and ultimately banal.

Parents in a similar situation might find that Ezra rings true. ... Also, Byrne is quite convincing as the distraught mom. But, on the whole, the film seems forced ... especially in its painfully contrived grand finale.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Aug 17, 2024
The movie is just fine.

The chemistry between Cannavale and the very credible Fitzgerald is evident in... a journey that has a lot of discovery and reciprocal learning, always spontaneous and distant from overtness. [Full review in Spanish]

The movie is a healing balm. [Full review in Spanish]
| Original Score: 3/4 | Aug 15, 2024
The movie is a bit uneven, implausible, and at times forced, but it grows emotionally when it focuses on the humanity of these imperfect characters... [Full review in Spanish]

It's a reminder that while autism can present significant challenges, it can also open doors to a deeper understanding and more authentic connection between parents and children. [Full review in Spanish]
| Original Score: 7/10 | Aug 14, 2024
This is worthwhile film-making and the performances are solid, but there's too much reliance on the schmaltz factor, especially towards the end. It will be interesting to see what the young actor Fitzgerald does next.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Aug 7, 2024
Showing a healthy disregard for mawkish cliches, Ezra unspools as an energetically paced, emotionally honest dramedy.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Aug 1, 2024
What begins as a somewhat lighthearted look at two parents who are really struggling to be okay with who they are and who their son is evolves into a caper comedy of sorts, taking a number of questionable turns along the way.
| Original Score: B- | Jul 24, 2024
More movies with a focus on autism should be like this.
| Original Score: 14/20 | Jul 23, 2024
Heart-tugging, they all learn life lessons.
