Fear Strikes Out Reviews
Solid acting horrible script.
Great acting from Anthony Perkins and Karl Malden, but otherwise it wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be. Just an OK biopic drama that is worth seeing once. (First and only viewing - 4/10/2018)
Fear Strikes Out is a decent film. It is about the life of Jimmy Piersall, who battled mental illness to achieve stardom in major league baseball. Anthony Perkins and Karl Malden give good performances. The screenplay is a little slow in places. Robert Mulligan did an alright job directing this movie. I liked this motion picture because of the drama.
Pretty darn good! Malden is great as the overbearing sports dad! And Perkins really owns his role and flashes a bit of his Norman Bates to come! Poor kid!
Tony Perkins' performance is riveting. Most parents are completely unaware of how their behavior affects their children. In this powerful movie, Perkins and Malden make it painfully obvious that verbal abuse can be just as damaging as hitting your kid. Neither is acceptable & Fear Strikes Out tells us exactly why.
An interesting story that's mostly executed quite well. Perkins and Malden stand out but so do this movie's flaws on occasion.
Anthony Perkins behaves like a toddler, Karl Malden wears a lot of hats, and little to no baseball transpires. What a time!
Very moving tale with extremely well cast leads. Perkins twitchy nervous energy is perfect for displaying Piersall spiral into mental illness and Malden's bombastic personality is able to convey a man who crushes his son's spirit without even realizing it. The look on his face when he becomes aware of the toll he's exacted on his child is heartbreaking. An excellent film.
Perkins is perfect in this role of a crazy baseball player. And Malden does a great job playing his dad. Plus, it's a true story. I liked it it's a very dramatic movie.
One of the better Baseball player bio films. The films two juggernaunt stars Malden and Perkins each give wonderful performances. The filmmakers made some of the events more dramatic than they were in real life. But if your're familiar with the real story, you relize that they probably didn't have too. While not a masterpiece this film will grip you and peak your interest all the way through. Very underrated film by both these stars.
Few can play the vulnerable mentally disturbed man-child as well as Tony Perkins. Here he is ably supported by a stellar cast among whom Karl Malden is the star. Don't be disuaded from seeing this film if baseball biopics aren't your cup of tea; this story will be compelling enough to hold your interest.
