Fear(s) of the Dark Reviews

Jan 26, 2017

An animated horror anthology where all of the segments were created by comic book artists. As is often the case, the quality of the segments is pretty uneven. Charles Burns is responsible for the opening segment, and it's by far the best segment. That's in and of itself a problem since the film has nowhere to go but down after the first 15 minutes. Other sections are good, particularly one featuring a girl afraid of the ghost of a samurai, but a different segment order would serve the film well.

Experimental and very interesting anthology.

Descent stories but they fails to keep your attention. 83 minutes of monochromic and minimalistic visuals is a way too boring.

Loved the concept of using phobias as theme of the movie

Excellent work in black and white animation.

I fear nothing in the dark, except the creepy narrator. Fear of the Dark live up to it's title, a black and white anthology horror film centred on the worst(?) fears of the animators. However, ti was not scary at all, I only like the first story, the rest bored me to death and didn't make any sense. It is filled with expressionist ideas but failed to present it properly.

"Fear(s) of the Dark is an unusual little confection, bound to be interesting to most viewers and downright riveting to artists and illustrators." A philosophical French take on what fear is using colorless animation. "Sinister and beautiful." "Rarely goosebump-inducing and often rather dull...but you'll become entranced by the animation."

Not as good as I was expecting. Very clever illustration and animation but just a bit too mundane.

Wow was this ever pretencious and not scary at all..There are maybe one or two stories that are slightly interesting the others I could not give a fuck about at all.

Synthetically introspective.

It has its share of brilliant sequences (the last two in particular) and some astounding animation but some of the segments are lacking in scares and it can get a bit pretentious.

A truly nightmarish experience interwoven with excellent storylines. Cilve Barker and Stephen King could truly bow before these grim poets and animators, who have managed to both scare and scar

Inventive anthology of creepy short animation pieces, including one by BLACK HOLE artist Charles Burns. While viewers will have their own favorites among the stories, this is a must-see for fans of avant-garde animation, as there's some pretty fun stuff here.

Really quite enjoyed this collection of stories. A couple of them are pretty creepy.

3 buenos cortos, 2 que no tanto y uno que "qué te dijera...?"

On one hand, this film is a fascinating and successful journey through both animation and the macabre. However, on the other hand, some of the stories in this anthology are not particularly interesting, and the ones that are could have been developed more.

This movie was really cool at the begining, but towards the third story i lost interest. i still give it three stars because i liked the asian girl's story so much. dunno why. maybe it's because it reminded me of stuff i've seen/read before.

Interesting animation, but creepy and a bit hard to follow.
