Finding Neverland Reviews
Only worse than the Peter Pan story is watching its inspiration.
"The story of Sir J.M. Barrie's friendship with a family who inspired him to create Peter Pan". A magic film about love and friendship. About how children need their parents, and parents need their children. A movie that warms the soul after watching. So soulful that at the end you can shed a tear...
I watched this as part of my journey when I directed Peter Pan on the stage, and did a deep dive into the author and his story. So I'm biased because I was really immersed in all of the magic and sadness at that time… So I really love this movie.
A plot that seems to stagger about for over an hour desperately searching for direction. Then it all comes together in the final half hour with a very affecting soliloquy on death and mourning. Not one for the family as it is in essence an adult film. Bought this on DVD for £1.
It's not a Christmas movie but I roll it out every Christmas because it just fits the mood.
The best acting performance from Freddie Highmore!
I enjoyed this film for the most part - the story it tells, one of 'the story behind the story' so to speak, was interesting and made me wonder about the life of J M Barrie but it is sad at times - sad and sobering. The main aspect of this film that I found off putting was Johnny Depp's less than amazing Scottish accent. I hadn't realised the author was Scottish, until it dawned on me that Depp was seemingly attempting a sort of cringey mix of English and Scottish in his accent in this film. It didn't seem entirely believable to me and I'm Scottish!. It would seem unfair to say it ruins the film because his accent isn't great but its still something that came to mind when I was thinking what to say about the film, hence me mentioning it. However, regarding the cast, Kate Winslet does well in her role as Barries wife, Sylvia. Of course she's English, so she doesn't have to try and put on an accent in the same way as Depp had to. It depicts an interesting story - a thoughtful and interesting one. My favourite aspect of it was how the parents interacted and tried to relate things to the kids. It isn't a greatly memorable film but its certainly not awful either. Some of the scenes are surprisingly touching, between the children and the parents. I feel it perhaps could have been better in one or two regards but as it is, its certainly worth a watch if your interested in the story.
While far from flawless, Marc Forster's Finding Neverland hits most of the right notes in it's telling of the story of J.M. Barrie's (Johnny Depp) creation of Peter Pan. Coming off a poorly received play and dealing with a failing marriage, Barrie finds himself immersed in the Davies family, creating a plutonic relationship with widowed mother Sylvia (Kate Winslet) and a playful rapport with her four sons, using his experiences with the family to cobble together the beloved play Peter Pan. Like Barrie's work itself, Forster's playful direction (interestingly angled shots, some cool scene transitions) adds to the fun, as do the performances of Depp and Winslet in the lead roles. It does border on saccharine sweet at times and the unnecessary and maudlin final ten minutes feel like they're tacked on to illicit tears, but overall it provides an interesting insight into the creative mind of Barrie.
"Neverland." Sweet story, nice accents, fairies, pirates, lovely sets but…I didn't feel like I've found Neverland through it, I didn't understand the main character, his motivations seem vague, could he be Peter Pan himself? But in a real world, and a story based on reality I don't know…Lacking of something…Convincing but too sober in my opinion, more magic would have done the job, at least a stronger romance between the lady and him.
A great story about the birth of the story of Peter Pan, and how it came from the darkest of places.
Just an absolute heartbreaker. One of the most underrated movies ever. The chemistry between Johnny and Kate was world class. Probably the two best actors of there generation in one film.
I'm a sucker for sentimental movies, and the tears really flow for this one. I've seen this movie half a dozen times since it first came out. While I know it's an excellent movie, I'm always surprised at how hard it hits me the next time. I've watched hundreds of movies over the years, and this is one of my favorites.
What could have been a typical biopic is helped by Marc Forster‘s (Loungers, All I See Is You) imagination and strong performances by Johnny Depp (Dead Man, The Professor) and Kate Winslet (Enigma, Heavenly Creatures)
Pretty preductable dramatization of a historic figure, bringing some conventional domestic conflict with a dash of childhood whimsy to match the imagination of its subject, author and playwright J.M. Barrie. Let's list off a few of the relatively safe subplots we can get in there - a loveless marriage falling apart, a new relationship blossoming in adversity (including a hovering and strict mother-in-law), and a child reeling from the loss of a parent. There are a couple of moments when the film allows itself to take full advantage of the vibrancy of Barrie's work, including an animated scene of a pirate ship early in the runtime that might instill some hope, but for the most part sticks to plodding period drama. The plot tries to revive itself by hoisting a teary-eyed final act upon you, but it doesn't necessarily land very well; the final shot, where both Depp and Highmore fade out from the shot, makes little sense from a narrative perspective. (2.5/5)
I absolutely adored this movie from start to finish. From the storyline to the chemistry between the actors, it was truly spellbinding throughout.
This movie is about how JM Berry decided to write Peter Pan.
It was odd, slow moving and the performances were only ok.
