First Daughter Reviews
As an early 2000s throwback, it was mildly entertaining. It’s not very good but I won’t spend time repeating what all of the original “critics” said about why. The fairytale gimmick is silly but looking at it in 2024, it’s now cringe. In the social climate of today, making a comparison between the presidency of the US, to an actual royal family is not something people fantasize about. The theme was playing out 20 years ago, now it’s just out of touch. Last gripe: if Samantha was at most 10 years old at the intro of the movie where her father was already president, and he’s reelected her freshman year of college, this means he’s been president for 2 terms and is back for another? It’s implied a few times that he’s been president since she was very young… these sloppy plot-holes are distracting and undermine the basic premise of the “fantasy”!
"The First Daughter," a film centered around the child of the President of the United States and featuring Katie Holmes in the lead role, was a delightful surprise. I was genuinely excited to see her on screen, as her presence has become quite rare in 2024, despite her undeniable talent as an actress. One aspect I appreciated was how the film shifted the focus away from Michael Keaton, who plays the president, allowing us to see the story unfold through the eyes of his daughter. Even though the narrative revolves around his reelection campaign, it was refreshing to center the plot on her experiences rather than solely on his character. The film explores her college life and the challenges of being the president's daughter, navigating the complexities of her position while trying to avoid trouble—even though she does have her fair share of mischief. The plot takes an interesting turn when she falls for a charming young man named James, portrayed by Mark Blucas, whom fans may recognize as Riley from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Their relationship develops gradually, which I found refreshing; the film doesn’t force the romance down your throat. Additionally, their roommate Mia, played by a talented actress, adds another layer to the story. I wish I could see her in more projects because she brings a lot to the film. Overall, I highly recommend "The First Daughter." While it may not be packed with action or delve deeply into romance or comedy, it offers a little bit of everything to keep you entertained. It’s not a five-star masterpiece, nor even a four-star film, but it’s a charming watch that provides some fun, quirky moments and a heartwarming ending. Perfect for when you need something light and enjoyable!
Really light modern fairy tale which could have been better if towards the end it turned a bit more serious and not all pomp and circumstance and fluffiness. Totally surprised that Forest Whitaker was so fully involved - from directing to soundtracking.
One of the most bland films I've ever experienced. There's nothing that makes it stand out as anything special. The relationships felt hollow to me. I didn't FEEL the depth of these characters in the slightest. The score is very in the background and forgettable. Truly nothing special. If you liked the film, FANTASTIC! But I personally felt nothing but boardum while watching it, and was relieved when it finally came to a close.
Very predictable movie. No nostalgia. Hoping the younger generation appreciates it.
Ugh Katie Holmes is a terrible actress. I never really watched her in anything before. Between the voice and the bad acting . . . no, thank you.

Lots of world wide negative reviews. I loved this movie, Katie Holmes was terrific and the movie flowed nicely. Ok friend 5 Stars from me.
This film is perfect for young teenagers as it is a cute chick flick. However the beginning of the film feels rushed and choppy. Thankfully Holmes's personality rings a nice light to the movie and keeps you interested in the film. It is a feel good/happy film with a pleasant but predictable ending. I would recommend this film if you want something easy to watch and relax.
First Daughter (2004) takes us on a journey through the life of Samantha Mackenzie (Katie Holmes), the President's daughter, as she navigates the challenges of love, friendship, and her identity in the public eye. Directed by Forest Whitaker, this film is a typical rom-com that offers a fair amount of charm and entertainment, making it suitable for a chill-out session when you're looking for a relaxed movie night. While it may not boast an exceptional storyline or groundbreaking performances, First Daughter manages to find its niche as a comfortable, feel-good flick. The plot might not be the most brilliant or original, but it carries a familiar vibe that many rom-com enthusiasts will appreciate. It follows the classic trope of a young woman searching for her true self amidst the pressures of her privileged upbringing and societal expectations. Katie Holmes does a commendable job as Samantha, portraying the struggles of a First Daughter yearning for independence and love with sincerity. Though her performance may not be award-winning, it fits well within the context of the movie and maintains a consistent level of engagement throughout. Supporting actors, including Marc Blucas as love interest James Lansome and Michael Keaton as the President, also deliver solid performances, contributing to the overall likability of the film. First Daughter's charm lies in its ability to whisk the audience away into a world of privilege, romance, and light-hearted humor. The film may not challenge your intellect or evoke intense emotions, but that's not its purpose. It serves as a pleasant escape for those seeking a simple and easygoing watch without too much complexity. If you're in the mood for an undemanding and sweet rom-com that can be enjoyed during your free time, First Daughter could be the perfect choice. It doesn't strive to be a masterpiece, but it succeeds in delivering its intended entertainment value with a dose of typical rom-com flair. Whether you're a fan of Katie Holmes or simply looking for a movie to unwind with, First Daughter provides a breezy option for a laid-back movie night.
Actually, we very much enjoyed this movie, contrary to some of the ratings. It is fun, wholesome, and not too heavy. The actors were well chosen for the characters. Perfect get away from the tumultuous world news.
HIGHLY UNDERRATED MOVIE!! EXCELLENT STORYLINE AND REALLY HOT LOVE INTEREST!! GO WATCH WITH ALL YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS ASAP!! The storyline is impeccable if you're into the whole bodyguard thing. Also MAJOR plot twist that will knock your socks off!! The execution could use a little bit of work but that's what makes it so much fun!!
Such a Great movie!!
This movies was great idk why it has a 8% on rotten tomatoes it deserves more.
Unbelievably painful to watch, even after a few drinks. I watched the first 5 to 10 minutes. Then fast forwarded to various parts of the movie. Even as bad movies go this movie was painful to skip through. Fyi I have first hand knowledge of how children of government officials are treated and this movie was just so far off, it was uncomfortable.
No point in pretending that this cheesy chick flick amounts to very much. But Katie Holmes is completely mesmerising and worth a whole extra star just for her
I spent a relaxing time
It doesn't use the political elements enough. An ok romance that does nothing new.
I don't know why, but this is actually one of my favorite movies. Call me boring or weird, but I love this movie...(despite all the negative reviews).
