Flawless Reviews
| Original Score: 2/4 | Mar 27, 2008
Outdated and schematic, this two-character melodrama belongs to the 1970s, when transsexuals were "novel" dramatic persona; even the gifted Philip Seymour Hoffman is defeated by the writing and direction.

For what it's worth, this could be Schumacher's best film.

Its weary clichs and flat comic bits are apparently supposed to be fresh and insightful.

The involvement of several real-life drag queens contributes to both the exhuberence, authenticity, and sheer panache to mark something of a return to form for the idiosyncratic director.

Flawless is a fractured picture, which is its most winning aspect.

So awful it just might put an end to Hollywood's hypocritical infatuation with men in drag as symbols of its own supposedly liberated sexual attitudes.

You need a pair of huge, hairy ones to make a picture this bad and call it "Flawless."

"Flawless" is contrived and overly schematic, but De Niro and Hoffman are such good actors that it never slips into pat sentiment.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Jan 1, 2000
Joel Schumacher's Flawless' is more fable than slice of life, and all these people and props give Robert De Niro and Philip Seymour Hoffman their opening to create two screwy characters from opposite ends of the great personality divide.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Jan 1, 2000
Seedy, grimy and unsightly as hell, even as it aspires to find the inner diva in us all, "Flawless" is what happens when a filmmaker has no sense of naturalism, no sense of realism and no real natural sense.

These two actors make every frustration and discovery seem fresh. But Schumacher doesn't put enough stock in their relationship, disrupting the engaging tale with storylines that are too slick and hackneyed...

A film that should be seen for the acting talent on board rather than its originality (or lack thereof).

It says a lot for Joel Schumacher's Flawless that you can see the picture's high-concept heart a mile away and still be won over by it.
