Flora and Son Reviews

Feb 11, 2025

An original, feel good, unrealistic movie whose message is music heals everything.

This movie was amazing the character development especially between Max and Flora (his mother). It was such a a feel godod movie. Great work done by the director. I would highly recommend this to anyone who has or hasn't seen Sing Street. It was such a good movie. And the fact it's set in Dublin as well is great as I'm from Ireland so it was seeing such an imperfect place of Dublin look oddly beautiful. Great casting and the music was good, however it was missing a big song like "drive it like you stole it" from Sing Street how ever the ending song was very good Max's rap was absolutely brilliant. Loved the movie well deserving of my 5 stars.

John Carney has done it again! Always a fan of his work, and *Flora and Son* hits all the right notes (pun intended). It’s such a heartwarming and charming story about a mother trying to connect with her rebellious teenage son. Watching their bond grow through music was so beautiful, and the songs? Incredible. Every track felt meaningful and added so much to the story. It’s not just about the music, though—it’s about how music brings people together, how it heals, and its importance in our lives. I had a smile plastered on my face the entire time. It’s got the perfect mix of laughs, heartfelt moments, and, of course, amazing tunes. The film was incredibly captivating and honestly a pleasant surprise. If you’re into music dramedies that make your heart sing, this one’s a must-watch.

Set in Dublin's inner city flats - her accent was awful and often times was trying too hard, unconvincingly. Then there's the weird plot: as if an inner city single mom who works as a cleaner, is going to make friends with a bloke online, who happens to lives in LA, and then pays him $20 per music lesson (don't ask about the even weirder concept of time zones - doesn't seem to apply here..?!) - DREADFUL

I love Sundance Film Festival! As a fan of Sing Street, I was excited when I saw that John Carney's latest film was playing in Park City. The experience of watching the film with the director and cast in the room was phenomenal. Carney is a masterful writer/director, and I am continually drawn to his storytelling. The performances in the film were equally strong with Eve Hewson crushing her role and forming a chemistry-fueled bond with Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It's hard to separate the film from the experience. The finale was a little jumbled and lacked closure in certain aspects. During the Q&A, Carney said that this film was a dedication to mothers (similar to how Sing Street was "for brothers everywhere"). Knowing that, my perception of the film's ending changed. The music was not as strong as his previous films, but it was still a solid movie. Best Character: Flora Best Scene: Rooftop Duet Additional Note: I wish that I could download the songs and listen already, but that will have to wait until the film is released.

Apart from some excellent sequences between Hewson and Kinlan, this film is an absolute cheese fest best suited for the Hallmark Channel. Shocked by the positive reviews.

Another gem from John Carney, possibly his finest yet. If you are familiar with his movies you'll know the deal, real life, dreams, crushing reality, self discovery, epiphany moments and most of all it's all about the music. There is a danger with these themes of being too saccharine and schmaltzy but he escapes these traps with endearing characters who you want to succeed with their choices especially when the world seems to be against them. Eve Hewson provides plenty of sass delivering some classic lines with sardonic wit and unflinching honesty. Some of the dialogue between Jeff (her transatlantic hunky guitar teacher) and Flora has you laughing and cringing in equal measure. The Irish street scenes are a joy as ever certainly rivalling Sing Street. A triumph for music and humanity.

3.75. Carney excels at sweet mostly-feel-good comedies with music at the center.

Good character driven movie. A feel-good movie that is worth the watch. Eve Hewson was excellent in the lead role.

Another very enjoyable movie by John Carney. More gritty than others (and more than I like) but it really works.

Flora and Son is pretty rough around the edges, with the persistent harsh language and initially unpleasant characters, but there's a warm heart at the center of this movie. It's a story about the healing power of music and how it can bring people together. I was particularly impressed with Eve Hewson, who gives a performance that is quite off-putting at first, but eventually wins you over. And Joseph Gordon-Levitt is likeable, as per usual. While I don't think the songs are as catchy as the ones from Sing Street, I do think John Carney has created another impressive non-musical musical movie.

It's hard to tell a wholesome story mixed with unwholesome language and innuendo. This movie did a good job of mixing the two. Kinda like a not quite as good Little Miss Sunshine, still a decent watch.

Flora and son looked like an inspiring movie, but honestly, the amount of swearing and profanity was so off-putting and offensive that it ruined it. I think the actors tried to be authentic but it lost its appeal almost from the beginning. So disappointing - I would not recommend this movie to anyone!

Heartwarming with a strong emotional core, Flora and Son is a great addition to John Carney's canon. The charming, comedic performances pair well with a solid story, while catchy tunes round it all out. I couldn't stop smiling, and even shed a few tears. A real gem!

John Carney's previous works are genuine crowd-pleasers over the musically talented charisma strumming the narrative strings with modernized spirit underlining realism through song. His knack continues here but better when demonstrating the simple power of the musical taste he tends to aim for in his meaningful stories, expressing the healing potential in humble, electrically performed fashion. (B+)

I'm really surprised this got as good reviews as it did. It was pretty shallow, made only more dramatic by the swearing and sexual situations. We kept thinking it would get better, which was the only reason we watched the whole movie.

Flora and Son is a small gem of a film. It's full of joy and love and hope and very easy to like. It's a journey of discovery about family and music. Flora is a struggling young mum in Dublin. She has a teenage son in Max who she had when she was sixteen. Her marriage ended and her ex is a bit of a deadbeat who occasionally looks after Max. Max is often at trouble at school and a hobby is suggested. When she finds a beat up acoustic guitar she thinks this will be perfect. But Max isn't interested. Instead Flora picks up the guitar and looks online for lessons. She finds Jeff, a washed up musician in Los Angeles. Soon they form a strong bond over music as he teaches her the magic of music. It's a reawakening for her. This lovely film is an ode to music and also perseverance. It won't shake the earth but it's full of charm and hope it's very easy to like. Eve Hewson is the heart of the film and is wonderful as Flora. A fine film indeed.

Early on it looked like a winner but then died. No real plot and the chemistry between the characters never developed further. And, the music mostly sucked.
