Flower Reviews

Apr 1, 2025

Zoey has a ridiculous role to play - a teenager that's sexually disturbed but is tossed redeeming qualities here and there. It's a try hard movie.

This is a weird movie. It's very dark, and more of a drama than a comedy. Kathryn Hahn and Adam Scott were kind of wasted given their great comedic backgrounds. Zoey Deutch have a good performance. The premise is interesting, but I was sort of repulsed by the characters. Had higher hopes for the movie.

Emotionally unstable and off track film that has no coherent guiding theme. The acting is actually very good, amazingly, since the dialogue is extremely scattershot and unconvincing. The premise and story and almost all occurrences depicted are totally disconnected from anything resembling real life. So many flaws, and so many problems with this movie it would take a while to list them all. I made it through, and I consider that an accomplishment somehow, but it was really just a waste of time.

Absolutely loved Zoey Deutsch in this film! Although the characters were not that likable and it was a bit difficult to emotionally connect, I did love the unexpected ending of the film!

In addition to being morally dubious to exact vigilante justice on someone, even a child molester, I didn't like the two's relationship and the copious amounts of sexual references.

The lovable it girl Zoey Deutch is a flower trying to grow up in a complicated world Deutch plays Erica, a 17 year old girl with a streak to bring down bad people Her mother played by Kathyrn Hahn acts more like a big sister but that makes her very likable Erica's father is in prison so she's hoping to save enough money to visit him She meets her stepbrother Luke first but he has no easy time adapting with Erica Her latest target is an older man named Will, a high school teacher who's wife left him after he was accused of a crime he claims he didn't comitt But the more time Erica spends with him the more she finds out She and Luke also slowly start bonding during this mystery Director Max Winkler makes an indie movie that's funny, charming, has its own dark sense of humor, provocative, and bold It's beautifully filmed and I like the soft music too Even if Zoey Deutch's character isn't 100% likable all the time her performance is genuine She claims to have it together but is not actually fine A person can make bad decisions but have the best intentions It is disturbingly honest about its characters as well as being a strong portrait for the perils for coming-of-age women Zoey Deutch is so freaking bubbly and steals the movie and it's easy to see having a love/hate relationship with her

This may have been one of the worst movies I've ever seen. The comedy continuously falls flat and the jokes almost never land. The entire movie just makes you feel uncomfortable. It tries to tackle serious topics in a funny way but fails miserably. Its commentary comes off as bizarre and insensitive. This movie was frustrating from start to finish.

it seemed like it was gonna be good but it kinda just went off the rails and tbh the ending was corny and didn't make sense. it felt like they didn't know how to end the story so they just made the protagonists fall in love at the end. im not sure why this is being marketed as a dark comedy, because there are about 0 jokes in the whole film and not even subtle ones or much ironic tone yes, tim heidecker is in it. he doesn't do anything funny, and his presence felt very out of place in an otherwise pretty serious film about pedophilia and abuse/neglect. i expected something at least a little funny, the closest i got was the girl having a book full of drawings of dicks she's seen. it was not believable for the two main characters to like each other in such a way, it was clearly not lined up by the rest of the film, and it also felt extremely uncomfortable because they are essentially step siblings.

I'm very surprised this movie got bad ratings from the critics and the audience alike! I thought it was an amazing and moving film that had awesome characters and some really strong messages. I believe it was outstanding and the overall plot was amazing. Zoey Deutch and Joey Morgan deliver amazing roles in this comedy/drama.

Spoilers ahead. It started out really promising with a weird but somewhat believable story and it was an easy watch right until the point Erica slaps the beer bottle out of the teacher's hand. After that short moment of compassion, it just all goes downhill and becomes painful to watch. The suggested deeper meaning of sexual assault on teenagers is completely lost and all that is left is anger about the cheesy storytelling of "fat kid ends up with pretty girl" that we have seen 1000 times. The two not just run away from the consequences, the movie also runs away from finishing that abandoned storyline in a meaningful way and ends with a 5 minute wrap up, where despite lying about the assault, killing someone and then running away from the police in the murder victims car, the world is good because the two had sex on the side of the road, she drew his penis and with the teacher dead, other girls have now come forward with their (hopefully not made-up) stories which makes it all ok and he's a good kid. After watching it, I don't know what is more repelling, because nearly every topic it touches gets ridiculed. Blackmailing is fun and it's OK because the daughter needs money to bail daddy out of prison. Drugging someone is fun and it's OK because someone said that guy is a bad person. Vigilantism is fun and it's OK because the police didn't believe them and they're the only ones who know the truth. Running away from consequences is fun and it's OK because you're in love. Being in prison is fun and it's OK because it turns out, that guy actually was a bad person and you were somewhat right all along and the prison is just a side-effect of doing what's right. The only thing this movie convinces me of not being fun and not being OK is this movie itself.

The bubbly, ditzy yet insanely intelligent Zoey Deutch steals the show here, as she does in just about everything she appears in. She is by far the reason to see this film. There's nobody out there quite like her. In FLOWER, she plays a high schooler (and it's good she isn't 100% convincing as being that young, considering the things that she does or happen to her), and we meet her as she is finishing a sexual act on a police officer. This is done so that a couple of her friends can secretly film what's happening in order to blackmail the cop. Purely for money. And this is an activity that she engages in frequently, and has NO qualms about performing this act on anyone. This makes her character uncomfortable to watch...is she "owning her sexuality" or is she deeply messed up. It's hard to say. She's clearly an intelligent and hyper-aware young lady. But she's got a messed-up relationship with her mother (Kathryn Hahn), her deadbeat father is now in prison and her mom's boyfriend (Tim Heidecker) and his fresh-out-of-rehab son are about to start co-habitating with them. Her intelligence is perhaps covering the pain. Or she could be totally in control of her emotions and her reactions. She's either very well-adjusted or very messed-up! Anyway, the blackmailing scheme takes a darker turn when Adam Scott, a former teacher, enters the picture. He could be a very bad guy, or he could be wrongfully accused. Choices are made and potential consequences are dire. The film walks the line between dark comedy and drama, not always comfortably. It wants to be silly and light-hearted at perhaps inappropriate times. It shoots for pathos that it hasn't always earned. Tonally, the film is a bit of a mess, frankly. Just like Deutch's character. She is capable of walking the line and making it all seem credible. The rest of movie isn't quite so successful. It's difficult subject matter, and perhaps it might be impossible to manage it better. I still enjoyed this a great deal. Deutch is great, and everyone else is pretty good as well. Scott does a good job, in particular. If you're looking for a quirky, squirmy, super-dark yet strangely upbeat (and pretty dirty) indie film, FLOWER would fit the bill. Who, exactly, IS looking for a film like that is a question that probably explains why the film had virtually no box office interest. It's an odd film, but I was glad to have discovered it.

The movie starts out with a 17 year old girl performing a sex act on a police officer then using video to take his money. We see she has taken 15k from other men. A while later they are seen at a bowling alley talking how they would have sex with this older man even if he was her dad. Sorry but i don't want to watch a not good person be the good girl. I am tired of men are bad and women are bad because men made them that way. You can keep your preaching.

(May contain spoilers!) This movie started well, but gets lost in the last 30 min. First off, don't watch this unless you like dark comedy. This is an independent film and the writers seemed to want to put some shock value into the script. There are really some interesting relationships going on; Erica and her mom, who is trying to cement a relationship with her new boyfriend, Erica and Luke, her new stepbrother and Erica and Will, a teacher accused (by Luke) of child molestation years earlier. These stories all converge an hour into the film, creating a crisis which must be resolved. But many viewers won't like the way the film resolves itself. The movie is really about Erica, played by Zoey Deutch. It's really a breakout role for her and some very good acting. But it's also hard to like her edgy, risk-taking, self-serving character Erica. It's hard to feel sympathy for her because she makes bad choices in life. Even if those bad choices are for a noble cause, they are still bad choices.

In terms of a plot, there's really nothing all that special about this film. It's pretty preposterous and over the top but not very fun. Still, it becomes watchable because Zoey Deutch is charismatic and makes the most out of her outlandish character.

fatphobia, white feminist bullshit, all white cast, boring

As unbelievable a character in real life as she was, Zoey Deutsch captured my heart in that film. Lmao, lets face it she is every teenage boy who isn't getting laid's fantasy, and I don't criticize movies that hard especially indies, because its art and maybe it was a fantasy of the writer's that he wanted to bring to life. When movies bore me to whe point i cant pay attention, I criticize that harshly. Flower is anything but boring, and yes you are watching a train wreck half the time, but that kind of added to the appeal, of bright and sunny yet seriously dark movie. The fantasy of the most unlikely guy to get any girl getting the prettiest girl in the movie who loves to blow guys no less. Idk where she was when i was in school, but shesure didnt live around my neighborhood. i was depressed as a kid, Id a know about her. So why not make a movie with and unlikely character. Thats why its a movie, not claiming to be a true story. Its fiction. As a fiction amoral story it was an emotional rollercoaster that was very entertaing.
